I watched the first arc of bleach, then lost interested. The only recent anime I'm following is Sayonara Zaibatsu Sensei because it actually has a distinct style and is goofy not unlike Azumanga but in a different way.
Sayonara Zaibatsu Sensei!?
That would certainly make for a slightly different experience.

Mononoke is really, really, really good. Like FLCL good.
Um.
I spent the last two pages listing good animes.
Do you really think I haven't seen Mononoke? I even commented on it's english dub.

Comparing Mononoke to FLCL is kind of an odd comparison, man.

I loved Naruto to death until they decided "Hey! We're catching up to the manga too fast, so lets jsut pull shit out of our ass for a year and a half and call it script!"
Then when they finally brought it back, they decided "Oh hey! Instead of letting the show catch up to the manga real quick again, lets just mix up a lot more shit so we don't run out of source material so fast! Der der!"
Seriously. I gave up on that show because it went into a year and a half of filler garbage, and their filler really IS total garbage. The movies are awful too; The people behin that show really have nothing at all to be proud of when they aren't using events from the manga.
Then when they brought it back up to speed instead of the filler nonsense they immediately started stretching the source material out as much as possible, to the point where the first fight that took place lasted until the fifth fucking episode of the new shit. It's beyond retarded.

Sorry, when a thread's moving this fast I can't keep up with who thinks what. And you said "only recent anime", so,

It seems like this is a problem with every fighting manga. What do you do in a fighting manga? Use up lots of pages with action, big fight panels, and stuff that lasts like 10-15 seconds of real-time, but takes up half your weekly chapter. And then, later, you have to fill 22 minutes of animation with that one chapter.

Well by recent I meant like a year.
Other than Zetsubou Sensei there a bit of a rut for original anime right now.
While we're on the subject of really good Anime, I should bring up Twelve Kingdoms. It's a bizarre series, but it starts out really strong, and keeps up it's very cool pace. It has a few low points where the story drags on too much on secondary characters, but all of the stuff that centers around the main character is all awesome.
It had to end a little sooner than it should have, though, because the series of novels that it was based on came to an end when the writer behind them stopped writing them for whatever reason.
it seems like I always like the concept behind them but then am disappointed when there's five episodes of people just talking about the fight instead of the fight actually happening

Even so, it's really really stupid when they're reusing the same fight clips more than once within the same damn 20 minute timeslot. Like going to a commercial and then picking things up a minute and a half before it first went to commercial.
By the way, did anybody here see that Earthsea movie? It's Ghibli, but not by Miyazaki and contains dragons. Not sure whether to risk it.
Heard some mixed reactions. Watch it with no expectations.
As I understand it, Miyazaki's son made choices Miyazaki senior does not agree with, and the movie came out to very lukewarm reviews.
Saw it in the theater. Was rather meh.
And then the aforementioned The Girl Who Leapt Through Time came out around the same time, did a fraction of the boxoffice gross, but went on to win like 4 or 5 Best Animated Feature/Animation of the Year awards for that year. Far, far more recommendable than Tales from Earthsea.

If you want to see fights, I guess Darker than BLACK would be up your alley. It centers around Hei, a contractor. Contractors are people who have received special powers but feel no emotion. The fights are usually one or two episodes.
Tengen-Toppa Gurren Lagann has giant mechs fighting, and is the most hot-blooded, awesome thing ever. Seriously if you haven't seen it you should be seeing it.
I don't even know man, the only one I saw had some guys take a room full of people hostage and made them bang each other.
Then the leader I guess chained 2 girls to sinks, banged them sodomized one with a shotgun, killed her (accidentaly?) when he orgasmed, and then tried to rape the lead character (I think she was) who he had tied up.
She grew a huge dick and broke his neck.
Then she raped the girl that he raped and hadn't killed.
There's only 8 pages left in this thread anyway. What else should we talk about?
How about Naruto, and how it's fanbase is more annoying than Richard Simmons on an ecstasy binge?
One of my friends puts on Naruto any time there's a damn TV within her reach.
Then she tries to explain what's going on.
Usually it's like "Naruto needs to fight this guy beca-hurffdurffurgleburglehurffadurffhurghhhllllgargle"
You see by that time I have already stopped listening and am in the middle of trying to strangle her and turn the channel.
rofl
I can understand. With me, it's a matter of having to tolerate my 12-year-old Neice's Naruto-related internet habbits when it let her on my computer when she visits.
I'm subjected to her dragging me to the screen and somehow convincing me to sit through fan-made Naruto flash animations that are the most awful things you've ever seen. And I've bared witness to Twilight Princess yiffy. *gouges eyes and ears out*
I almost wish she would spend her time watching Naruto and Sasuke gay porn instead.
My favorite example of recycled animation is from Vampire Hunter D. The hand eating the dirt just makes me giggle inside.
As for fun anime shows I can not name any current ones. About the only things I follow are the manga for One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, and Berserk. They may be mainstream but I still enjoy my four favorite roles, Pirates, Samurai, Ninja, and Knights (kinda).

Throw away your logic and kick reason to the curb!
A whole movie I waited for something to happen. Anything to happen. What do I get? I get a fucking shit ending where nothing happens. Nothing at all. It wasn't even a kick to the nuts, it's more like a foot gently rubs the nuts but it's not enjoyable it's just irritating. The animation and art was fantastic though.
because people put cowboy bebop on this unreachable pedestal
it might not have incorporated hip hop as well as cowboy bebop did with jazz, but it still had great characters and a similarly structured storyline (unrelated adventures stringed by a somewhat distant overall goal of the adventure, each character having their own part), and the music and art were both beautiful.
Bleach doesn't really involve samurai. Samurai actually practice swordsmanship, not DBZ-style nonsense powerupsthat-act as the sole factor in who wins a fight.

Her myspace is full of youtube Naruto clips and gifs, character quizzes, all that jazz.

Ghost Hound looks promising. It's by the same team that did Kino's Travels.
Before it turned into
episode 230
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
episode 231
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
episode 240
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OKAY I AM POWER LEVEL BILLION NOW YOU CHARGE UP

Teehee.
"My butt! it's so full of your dick!"
I'm watching that (Kino no Tabi) right now, actually. It's interesting.

samurai champloo was awesome
It is so awesome.
VEGITA
The episode with the railway workers! And the drowned city! Shit, now I have to watch it all again.

I kind of liked it
though from what I hear the series has a rather unfortunate time-skip at one point
