Now, some of you ay have foolishly thought that Bob McDonnell, fairly convicted of a very egregious crime in an open courtroom, would face punishment of some sort. Perhaps something like the 2 year prison term (with chances for parole, obviously) that he was sentenced to as part of his conviction.
He even lost his first appeal.
However, with the case now in front of SCOTUS, it's looking like 'ol Bob - who hasn't spent so much as an hour in jail - is probably going to walk. Why? Because well everyone does this shit, lol, so why shouldn't Bob get to do it? Also apparently Justice 'Pants on Head' Kennedy feels there is no difference between taking a senator on a fishing trip vs sending a senator on an all expenses paid vacation with unlimited Ferrari access & handing him cash money bribes. Because Kennedy doesn't live in the real world I guess.
The thing is, both Kagan & Sotomayor seem to be wavering in McDonnel's favor. The only one who seems to agree with the jury of Goddamn alleged peers that found McDonnel guilty is RGB.

Even the liberal justices have been breathing the rarified air for a while.

It's a good thing I'm incredibly worn out otherwise hearing this after listening to this piece on immigration courts in the morning would send me screaming into incandescence.

i mean the issue isn't really guilt so much as the role of money in politics - and the current court seems to be very permissive regarding money as speech. i guess really the issue is that the stringent prohibition on gifts that applies to federal workers doesn't apply to state level officials, so it could be solved with new laws
The sad thing is the point about citizens united is valid. If you follow the logic of cash = money you pretty much gut any and all corruption/cash for action laws on the book. People have the right to speak freely to each other in this country.

So apparently, it's after 50 dollars they have to report a gift and they don't have to report gifts to immediate family members.

Nice chart to figure out how honest a news source is.
