I prefer the MIDI stylings of Descent 1, personally. Some of those tracks are like Mannheim Steamroller scoring a industrial space thriller.
Of the two economic wankery games 2070's soundtrack is way better. This is unfair though because I don't think any single soundtracks really done as good a job at capturing the mood of the game like 2070's.
Seriously even if you hate city builders go buy Anno 2070's soundtrack. It's rad.

I can think of a large number of game music tracks I like, but only three stand out for me as being truly great.
Suicide Mission from Mass Effect 2 has already been linked several times. Suicide Mission is the perfect piece of music to accompany the greatest badass in galactic history as she descends in the lowest pit of hell to rescue the souls of the damned and murder Satan to death.
Morrowind - Main Theme
It begins with a drum making the sound of a heartbeat. Thud. Thud-thud. Thud-thud. The theme itself begins, soft, tentative; a solitary explorer walking at dawn, the world waking around him. The theme repeats, and it is regal; a new kingdom, powerful and dynamic. The theme builds, and the third repetition of the theme begins, and it is majestic, the empire at the height of its strength. But the strength quickly fades, and the theme weakens and turns melancholy. And in the end, the music is gone, the only thing left is the drum. Thud. Thud-thud.
Mass Effect -Vigil
Here an empire once stood. Their time has passed, their long struggle is over, and their vigil has come to an end.
I will always love the 8 bit versions of rock songs they did for Snes RnR racing. Like to the point even nowadays if I hear any of the songs anywhere, I hear the 8 bit version in my head. I may have played TOO much of that game
I get a lot of the flipside too, I used to play my vids on a crappy TV without sound, so I would usually toss a tape or CD on and loop it for hours and hours of gameplay.
To the point now, if I hear certain songs, I immediately see the game in my head. eg: anything off Offspring Ignition makes me see Secret of Mana.
