Cut the Cable (TV) - need advice on DVR

BigityBigity Lubbock, TXRegistered User regular
Recently we cut the cable cable...cable tv cable? Whatever.

We no longer pay 150+ bucks a month for 2935 channels - like 8 of which we watch.

We have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video Prime, and something called SlingTV - which streams live TV of various channels. We also plan to get a HD antenna for the local stuff.

My question is: Can we get a DVR and use it to record some of these streamed shows while they are live, and what should I be looking for in such a device?

It's.. well kind of a gray area depending on who you ask. Some consider it a DRM/Copyright violation. Others consider it perfectly legal because of "time shifting" being legal (recording music/tv with your VCR).

There's a few pieces of software that I know that can do this, a few are .. not something I'd want to install. I don't know of any hardware device that can do this though, it'd be impossible to capture from a smart TV, and sort of a small nightmare to do it with your computer in terms of hardware.

Here's some more info on the legalities of it and some of the views. You should check it out!

Thanks. Kinda sucks you can't record stuff - but makes sense. These are the same folks charging 150 bucks a month for 95% garbage.
