The one downside to Steven Universe is that this show really really highlights to me how I just cannot sing for the life of me. Just no no no nope.

Oh can I say one thing I've noticed in the past dozen episodes, that's kind of a character design thing, that I've really liked:
Pearl's increasingly been shown with more messy hair, which I really as a visual representation of her loosening up and not holding everything inside so tight.
Something I've noticed watching old episodes: Steven has grown! They used to always depict him as a head shorter than amethyst but now they're the same height
Something I've noticed watching old episodes: Steven has grown! They used to always depict him as a head shorter than amethyst but now they're the same height
Which is weird since both he and Connie seemed to be drawn shorter than usual in thursdays episode
I really hope we find out one day what the deal was with the Heaven Beetle. It seems fundamentally different from the corrupted gems they've dealt with.

As a voice actor, the downside for me is the realization that guy characters pretty much never get good emotional lines like the dialogue in this show.

I hope it's this because they definitely do a lot of foreshadowing but I feel like they may just have not worked out how they wanted corrupted gems to work yet at that point

They've mentioned that the characters don't have rigidly defined proportions, and so they tend to change up a bit between episodes.
Correct, there was a statement by Rebecca or one of the other crew that no one in the show had rigidly define proportions, but they did mention that Steven would be growing up and getting taller ever so slightly during the show, and not just leaps or time skips as is the common practice in production.
It's entirely possible that the beetles simply are corrupted gems. Just with different mindsets than some of the others we've seen. They are all different gems who had different personalities before the diamond mine went off, after all. The blast may have effected each of them in different ways.
Some became feral beasts that retreated into the mountains. One developed a hunger for shiny things. Another became a living memory. And apparently, two of them became a pair of silent and reclusive insects with good tastes in video games.
Steven isn’t a reincarnation of Rose. Steven is just Rose’s child. Which is still impressive and groundbreaking since he’s the first human-gem hybrid. But he’s not a human-gem reincarnation. He’s just their child. All of his powers are inherited from his gem DNA, not from being a reincarnation. I’m going to go so far as to say that even his gem was a product of DNA and not a symbol of the fact that he’s Rose 2.0.
It's neat because it makes a couple of episodes more relevant than they are thought to be.
If I had a criticism of it, it would be that while shapeshifting for a long time is shown to be dangerous in Steven's Birthday, in the other birthday episode, So Many Birthdays, Steven seems to shapeshift for a prolonged period with no harm (or at least, not the same kind of harm). But that could be put down to him shapeshifting unconsciously instead of deliberately or maybe it's just early episode weirdness and they hadn't pinned down shapeshifting yet.
The other issues with the theory are just stuff that doesn't have proof one way or another. If Steven isn't Rose where did Rose's gem go? I'd guess his gem is still her gem because that's what the other gems have seemed to indicate. I don't think we'll get much info on Steven's birth either way, we know enough already and more detail isn't needed.

Like I never thought that was an option
I'm pretty sure one writer (Ian JQ I think) said that was the case.
Basically Rose made a womb for Steven and then passed her gem onto Steven as a final act.

Yeah, what ms. dapper said. I thought they were fairly explicit about that.

It's ambiguous, but Steven seems to think of himself as a reincarnation of Rose more and more as time goes on, and there isn't much that could disprove it short of his gem exhibiting independant agency.

the thing is though, rose is her gem. it's not something she has, it's her. the 8 foot tall pink haired woman is just a projection from the gem
if she passed her gem onto steven, then steven literally is her, mixed with human traits inherited from greg
Right. But:
Gems do not naturally sexually reproduce. When you sexually reproduce you take a bit of person A and mix it with person B slosh it around and BABIES. Since the only thing Rose had to give to that whole process was her everything, it kills her and makes a new thing. So basically death in childbirth.
And Steven is clearly more than just a new gem. He is immune to homeworld's anti-gem weapon tech and shields and can fuse with hoomans.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
For me the difference is whether there's a little bit of Rose still in Steven or whether there's just a little bit of Rose in Steven in the same old regular way humans have a little bit of their parents in them.
I always imagined it as like, rose turns into light and retreats into her gem and then the form of steven comes back out of the gem
perhaps is it something like how the injectors make gems, only rose injected... herself... into her own gem??? idk man the details of it aren't too important I think, greg sums it up well enough with "she gave up her physical form to bring you into the world"
For me the difference is whether there's a little bit of Rose still in Steven or whether there's just a little bit of Rose in Steven in the same old regular way humans have a little bit of their parents in them.
"that's me, loving you, and loving being you" would suggest the former

I think only Rose knows if she was being literal or poetic with that line.

Magic blurs the barriers between literal and poetic
Finally my Gravity falls book 3 is coming! No idea why it took a month but whatever.
Got guide to the crystal gems. Its aimed at a slightly lower age group than I thought. If youve watched the show almost all the info is rehashed. Also its just season 1 so theres almost nothing on Lapis Peridot or Jasper. The lack of any original art is a bummer as well.
That SU sheet music book is tempting though.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

I have a little bit when it was first starting, is that even streaming anywhere?
I'll still always miss the overuse of canned animation and blowing up Zorak though.

But I know that we can hum along, in the real way.
they got some vidyas in the interim!
Dang, that torpedoes the theory that video games are gem tech.
