I moved around every couple of years growing up, so people I met online were pretty much the only consistent friends I had growing up. I'm very social and extroverted so never had trouble making new friends wherever I went so they weren't really a replacement for anything, but it is nice to have some friendships that lasted more than 2 years. Some friends I met in EverQuest a few years ago I'd probably consider among my best friends today, as a direct result of knowing them the longest.
