    I don’t know what to feel. At one point, he advocated some rather sexually progressive views, which undoubtedly affected American society. But as time went on and society caught up and surpassed him, he became just an old dude surrounded by hot ladies. He just never evolved and kinda held back later progress.

    Yeah, you can praise the good and slam the bad about him at the same time.

    He was a cultural icon but in a time long past. I'm curious what people of that era will have to say about it over the coming days.

    I can't say I know much about Hefner. I always kind of assumed the whole "surrounded by women" thing was a shtick. An image he maintained for the brand, but wasn't serious about behind closed doors.

    Then again, maybe not.

    Either way, everyone involved presumably knew what they were about. What business is it of mine?

    I'm wondering how long the Playboy Empire can last after his death. Technology and culture has made porn magazines and movies/television a quaint relic of the past. Even the Playboy mansion, an iconic pillar of Playboy, seems like an old knitted sweater people kept around because Great Aunt Gladys made it for them.

    The Hef deserves a RIP from me. He seemed like a genuinely decent dude with some old fashioned views on women.

    They back-tracked on that pretty quickly. They have an online presence and still do a little journalism, but to be honest I have no idea how they make any money besides licensing out the bunny head logo to car seat cover manufacturers.

    Sell a ton of merchandise. In Asia, Playboy is primarily know for clothes and accessories. It’s logos can be seen at trendy clothing shops all over the place. Pretty sure most people aren’t even aware of the magazine.

    That article I linked to says most of their money is made via licensing, yeah. The magazine only had 700,000 monthly readers as of February.

    Yeah, I was (pleasantly) surprised while playing Mafia 3 when I actually looked at the Playboy collectables expecting only nudes and I also got a six page long interview with a former Secretary of Defense. That 60's 'nudie mag' took journalism more seriously than a bunch of actual news organizations do today.

    For a while there, Playboy was paying its writers double what the rest of the magazine industry was paying, which let them grab all the best writers out there.

    Ray Bradbury actually serialized Fahrenheit 451 in the magazine in 1954. "Reading it for the articles" really wasn't that much of a joke.

    I was curious if Hugh or Stan Lee would go first.

    Also peaking my curiosity - what our President thought of him, and if he'll attend the funeral.

    She wrote a book on it, but highlights include that having sex with Hefner was not in the contract but expected of every woman who moved in, mindgames based on who Hefner went out with for an evening and polaroids left at the doors of women who did not go (as well as mindgames based on who was awarded which bedroom, with only a few having a semblance of privacy; it's implied that this was to turn the women against each other), openly berating or praising them in front of the others for their appearances, curfews of 9 PM, being unable to leave his side during events, and having a photographic catalogue of every single woman who ever entered the mansion that he had his secretary document and file based on a letter-grade he gave them for attractiveness

    There's also a bunch of detailed stuff on the sex I don't want to repeat

    It honestly feels like another version of the horrifying shit R.Kelly does, but people accept it because he was a powerful old white guy and these women 'knew what they were doing' moving in there
