Advice: Simple run 'n' gun games?

So my 4 year old picked up my 3DS and discovered Metroid. He's desperate to play but honestly I think it's too hard for him to really enjoy with all the button combos required and different modes of guns etc.

Do you have any recommendations for that sort of game but a lot simpler? Preferably not too graphic / realistic. Can be on pretty much any console, we have most of them stashed away somewhere :)

    There are a few metal slug games on the 360/ wii. Plus since they aren’t the arcade games you have infinite coins .

    Mutant Mudds maybe? I don't remember how quickly it gets difficult, but the controls are simple and it's not realistic.
