Iill probably be heading out to buy these bits in about an hour because my computer dying so any quick comments on why I shouldn't would be appreciated.
I'm an AMD man myself, so I can't really comment on Intel.
And why not get a raptor drive?
Because for a (arguably)marginal performance increase, you spend $100 more and get 100GB less.
Ya, that's a good idea.
Seriously though, 8800GT, you'll thank us later.
And if you can't afford an 8800 GT spring for a Radeon 3850 which is priced out similar to a 8600 GT but much faster. But whatever you do nix the 8600 GT there are much better cards available for your money at a similar price or for a bit more.
I actually have a similar build
Same CPU,
2 GB's of Corsair XMS Ram
Same MOBO (i've had no troubles with it)
200 GB Western Digital Drive
and a 8800 GT
Running XP and I have no issue running Crysis at 1280 x 1024 on High settings under Windows XP
I had Vista installed but a game of Dawn of War somehow corrupted my registry so I went back to XP.
If you ask me, those parts all look fucking excellent and anyone that says otherwise is just making noise. There might be problems with the motherboard but I doubt you'll ever encounter them.
Also it could be that he wants the 8600 as as stop-gap card for now, before he has the money to get a better one. I'm sure Gert knows that the 8600 isn't fantastic.
It looks like whoever helped you pick out those computer components is akin to the second coming of Christ, GertBeef, and he should be worshipped by all men.

I also have an ASUS screen, and while it can get niggly, it too works just fine.
When someone says something mainstream is utterly terrible, 95% of the time they heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy.
Get a better video card though.
Foxconn boards are usually tits.
A good 8800gt is about $300.

Going off topic, but how loud are Raptors compared to normal drives?

Asus stuff is great. You might be thinking of Acer.
