Civ 6 has taught me the name of a classic tune. I was playing and met America and it started playing Raffi's Peanut Butter Sandwich song on a violin, and I was like "wait what the heck" so I looked up the soundtrack and apparently the song is called Arkansas Traveler and has half a dozen possible lyrics and also an old vaudeville act with city slicker vs. country bumpkin jokes.
I just got Civ 6 on the Switch! If you came up to me on the street and said "hey, how is Civ 6, is it good or bad," I would say "please leave me alone, I don't know you but apparently you know me somehow and that makes me uncomfortable."
I'm pretty new to Civ so I'm very bad at winning the game but it sure is fun. Also, is the weekend over already? Feels like I just started playing.
I played Civ 5 but I feel kind of lost with this one. I think sometimes there are too many options, and too many things to look into and think about at once. Last time there was just primarily the tech tree, now there's also the government tree...I can't just build everything in my city off the bat, I have to build districts first which unlocks more things to build there, and if I'm not paying close attention I could miss some crucial awesome thing I keep skipping past to build more aqueducts or something. Tons of options in religion which don't seem to be major things but I feel like with the right combination could be significant...I don't know, I don't remember if I built a whatever district next to a river to get some kind of bonus!
Also, when I first started up the game it brought up the usual license agreement stuff, and I chose "I do not consent to all," and then nothing happened. So I don't know what that means. I can still play the game just fine. And I got an email from Nintendo that I provided 2K Games with my birthdate regardless.
I played Civ 3 once or twice but that's it, so it's all new to me. I got steamrolled on my first game for a variety of reasons. There was a bunch of things I didn't understand at the time like how food, housing, and production works for example. Plus I didn't understand that you can purchase units. I had a ton of money and not much else. After I played an entire game, I watched a six-part tutorial on youtube for total beginners which helped a lot.
I think on my next game I'll think a little harder on where I'm settling my cities and how I can develop them. My first two games I pretty much selected whatever was available.
One of my favorite things to do, which I'm doing right now, is play on a larger map but remove 3 or 4 rival civs so there is a lot more room. The AI is not as good as a player at settling quickly, and having a few more towns than them makes a big difference in your options at any given time, even if you're not as good a player.
I'm finding it's important to garrison a unit in each town, even if they're nothing special, and also build at least ancient walls when they are quick/cheap.
It's a little vexing to find out people still think Nintendo is hyper puritan, or is just "starting to allow" certain content, when they've been allowing it for over a decade.
There’s no argument that Nintendo hasn’t been on-board with violence for years. After some of the more heavy-handed localizations during the WiiU era, however, it’s good to see that they have backed off the scissors when it comes to catering to the fan service market.
I can't really recall any heavy-handed localization in the Wii U era other than making obviously-underage girls less sexualized.
The last few SRW games have gotten a full english translation (and they haven't even been bad since the first one), but they just weren't released outside the SEA region. Haven't seen any confirmation about English for this one yet, but I'm very much hoping it gets it and that I can play it on the Switch.
Aside from being on the Switch, this one is also noteworthy for including Cowboy Bebop for the first time.
EDIT: An "Asian version" was confirmed, which probably means SEA region in English. Hopefully.
Is DOAX3 whatever extra initials are in there now still a fighting game? I don't think I want to google it, based on current discussions.
I still remember playing the first one at a friends house on Playstation. It seemed like a decent fighter, but I never put much time into fighters except Smash.

DoA Xtreme is a spin-off fanservicey sorta thing. Zack keeps finding ways to buy islands or something and builds vacation resorts on them while inviting all the ladies to come hang out. You play volleyball, pool games, and gamble at the casino. Also there's super cheesecake swimsuits. Also a light friendship sim element to the game as you buy gifts and stuff to get the other ladies to like you and be your BFF.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Man, I really enjoyed StarLink, but I think to the surprise of no one, that game went on clearance super fast. I'm seeing it half off just about everywhere. And if it still doesn't move, I bet the toys will be seeing 70% discounts just to get them gone in a hurry.
Which is a shame because it's a good game, and I was hoping for some post launch support. But them's the breaks I guess.

Or you can just go on walks along the beach and hang out by the pool and your vacation will end either way.
It can be a lot of fun to do stuff like make characters who canonically HATE each other become friends over the course of a few days.
And, yes, getting to play dress-up with improbably-proportioned digital women in swimwear is part of the draw. I will put it simply; I like boobs.

Wow at the list of franchises. Gundam is like, yeah, sure, more Gundam, but Rayearth and Expelled From Paradise? I wouldn’t expect those to be on anyone’s list thinking about giant robots but I find their inclusion strangely compelling.

Every time I see someone just dismiss a game like this as gross I remember an episode of GameGrumps where a lesbian sent in a copy of one of the DOA Beach Volleyball games with a note saying that the game helped her realize she was gay, and be comfortable with that.
And for some reason we're more accepting of lusty lesbians discovering themselves with a sexy video game than lusty teenage boys doing the same. One's some sort of story of empowerment and self discover, and the other is a story of objectification and thinking less of women.
Why can't people just like what they like and not be judged?

One person having a moment of self-discovery via a game that makes a bunch of money based off of purely objectifying women doesn't exactly mean the effort was worthwhile or altruistic in any way.

Yeah they will literally never get Western releases because the licensing structure for these properties in the West is a plague of corporate greed.
Good odds we'll get one we can bring in from the Asia-Pacific region though. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure they're fully aware that there's a solid import market for the English translations, which is part of why they do it this way. They can get some measure of profit from the West without having to deal with the rightsholders.

I've heard rumors that the reason why there hasn't been any Macross representation in the last few games is because of licensing issues outside of Japan. I can only imagine what a nightmare that kind of thing is.
It's a little vexing to find out people still think Nintendo is hyper puritan, or is just "starting to allow" certain content, when they've been allowing it for over a decade.
They literally bankrolled Bayonetta 2 and Devil’s Third.
Ah, Devil's Third... I was really hoping that game would be good. It looked like the kind of cheesy, over the top ridiculousness we see in stuff like Devil May Cry and I was eager to see what it would be after I saw the trailer at E3. It could have been a great shot in the arm for the WiiU.
Instead we got a dull, third person action game which is barely playable, and a story and characters that takes everything so seriously, to the point of boredom.

Harmony Gold’s license will finally expire in 2021, despite them suing to try to get a court to agree that they hold the rights for all time. Maybe then we’ll actually get some Macross games exported again.
Sadly it will be too late for the PS3 RPG to get an English localization, unless it gets remastered or something. That game was amazing and more people should have had the chance to play it.

The objectification of women in the service of the male gaze perpetuates the cultural idea that women exist solely to please men and are lesser people than men in their own right, especially when media is thoroughly saturated with a thousand variants of that idea.
Lesbians are not terribly likely to buy into and perpetuate this narrative for reasons that ought to be blaringly obvious.
Wait, so is the Dead or Alive game beach volleyball?
Yeah, the last proper DoA game on Nintendo hardware was Dimensions on the 3DS.
Dimensions actually had a great Streetpass implementation, you would get other people's fighters in your game and could fight them for ranking points. I had a rivalry going with someone at my office who played Leifang, and every day for MONTHS I would get a new green light on my 3DS letting me know that they were back for me to fight. Always Leifang and always on the Metroid stage. I still have no idea who it was but I like to think they looked forward to beating me-as-Kasumi up every day as much as I looked forward to my daily Leifang.
It annoyed me that Dimensions had a Metroid stage but no playable Samus. Come on man, guest fighters are so commonplace in fighters these days! They could make up for it by having Samus in this Switch release of DOAX. I want Samus to frolic in a bikini, I don't care what all y'all think. Bonus points for purple bikini and green hair.
Volleyball games are my weakness though...Super Spike Vball on the NES and Beach Spikers on the GameCube were two of my favorite games. Is it a decent volleyball game if I'm ok with gratuitous boobs?

It might not be great for that, because your partners can ditch you if they get mad at you and then you're stuck with no way to play volleyball unless you can befriend someone new. Also you are restarting every two weeks, so there's no career mode or anything.
The original game actually got a ton of flack in the way that "walking simulators" get flack these days, because you can literally do nothing for 14 straight days and still see the end credits.
Kinda funny that it took me nearly 2 years to experience the beauty of dock sharing, but it was really cool with my friend and I being able to quickly and easily swap between our 2 game libraries on the same TV by just sliding our consoles in and out of the dock. He even ended up buying 2 games from my library by the end of the weekend.
