Megami Tensei has a long history on Nintendo systems. It's definitely more than just a random game series. It's as old (and almost as many titles) as Final Fantasy, if not as well known.
Never played MegaTen/Persona, but the games have always oozed style and this looks really cool.
And regarding the "but my Nintendo" argument, it sort of makes sense since MegaTen has a good track record of being on Nintendo systems and there was the whole #FE debacle (which I'd still enjoy seeing ported to Switch...). At the very least there's more of a justification here than there was for Snake. I know it sort of stings when there are more Nintendo-centric characters it would be fun to see, but it's hard for me to be upset with such a fun pick.
Best case scenario this means we see a few Persona games ported to the Switch. I'd love a chance to take a stab at the series.
I mean I'm damn stoked for this. Probably more for the music than the actual character.
I'm just over playing the "technicality" game now. Snake pushed it. Cloud stretched it to breaking point. This snaps it. They picked a PS3/4 game and character. And that's A-OK. I don't remember who said it, but somebody said that any company and IP worth their salt will jump at the chance to get into a Smash Bros. game, regardless of implied eligibility. It's the hot thing to be in.

I don't think this is any worse than Cloud at all? Snake was valid the whole time, too ;p

Joker technically has appeared on a Nintendo platform, so I don't know if it's totally unreasonable. I don't know that it really feels like more of a stretch than Cloud or Snake at any rate.
His final Smash is Morgana telling everyone to go to bed.
But seriously I'm very confused. Is Persona 5 actually coming to Switch? Because I feel that should have been announced before/in tandem with this. Of all the characters to represent Megaten, a guy from the more recent Personas would have been the last one I'd expected
Wow, world of light on hard mode is a lot harder than I expected.
Also there's way more changes to the bread and butter characters than I expected as well. I'm digging kirby's new dash attack!

My body... it is weak. I'm getting bodied in adventure mode, which makes me think it's going to take me forever to unlock all the chars. I'm still getting used to the pro controller vs. the giant A button of the gamecube (I have GC controllers, just.. you know, don't wanna).
I am already happy with some of the spirits I've gotten. Does everyone start with the same spirit? I got Urabosa to start.

It's pretty cool. I'm using characters I wouldn't normally pick because they're better for the particular fight.
For instance, Marth against that giant Dedede is terrible, but Mario is great because he has a projectile attack and he can cape the gordos.

So the Roll Volnutt spirit battle...
The only item that spawns are Dolphin spaceship rockets... At least SOMEONE is trying to get Mega Man off the moon....

Man it will be a WHILE to get any kind of grip on ALL these fricking characters. I've never even tried Bayonetta or Corrin.

Aha that’s right, I always forget about pre MGS metal gears. And I guess Cloud was in Theaterrhythm and kind of final fantasy explorers? So Joker really isn’t much more of a stretch than that, I wouldn’t think.

Metal Gear, Ghost Babel, and the Twin Snakes.
Not counting Snake's Revenge.

The stage with Kapp'n and high wind and no swimming was some stupid bullshit I tell you h'what.
...yeah, okay. As people have said, Joker is kind of weird due to being a PS only character, but I'm looking at him as a MegaTen rep. The persona spinoffs are in fact unusual among MegaTen for NOT being on Nintendo systems, MegaTen has had more games on Nintendo consoles than out of them. And the thing is that Persona protags tend to have... well, a LOT more style and personality than your average MegaTen protag so I can kind of understand it. It just feels weird.
You’re up against a team of Yoshi, with a rule where all fighters are easy to launch. In theory, this means you have a fight where you swat down a large-but-weak horde of enemies. In practice, you are outnumbered 4 to 1, and you are super easy to launch. This results in you being ping ponged between enemies who have extreme stage presence on a super tiny stage, who will back each other up with a fight-ending Smash attack if you stop to breathe, let alone attack one of the four.

Go get one of the spirits that makes you heavier.
I've found that the best thing is to not ram your head into a hard fight and just go somewhere else first instead. Some fights are trivialized by using certain spirits or certain characters.
I'm thinking a lot of these spirit fights are really dependant on your spirit loadout, from stats to special effects. And you can't just "git gud" and ignore the whole system, not unless you're a Smash god or something.
It's been a while since I played a Smash games. Do smash attacks have a "cooldown" on them? There's been moments where the enemy has over 100%, and I am just hitting smash after smash after smash, and the damn thing barely moves at all. And there's no other funny business going on, like they're metal or have increased defense. They're just not flying away at all, and all I can think of is that I spammed the side smash attack too much or something.

Hot damn, Joker in Smash is fucking awesome. People have already mentioned the great Persona 5 music we're gonna get, but I'm hoping we'll also get tracks from other Persona games. Specifically, I want the P3 version of the battle theme from Persona Q:
So what's the verdict on this as an offline game? My internet is too terrible to even contemplate paying money to play online (I played a few races of Mario Kart, and even those weren't smooth), and I'll only get to play local multiplayer very, very rarely, so what's the single-player like?
Every time I see ‘The floor is lava’ as a battle condition my heart goes a flutter

The spirit board seems to be a reasonable place to trigger new challengers. I was doing some CPU battles too. Just wish I'd unlock some characters I don't suck at... *sigh* I may pull out my Zero Suit amiibo and see if that unlocks her...
