I'm not sure if this is a hot take or not but I think Aquaman is a more interesting and enjoyable watch than most of the recent MCU fare.

I wanted to like Aquaman a lot!

But man, there was just...so much dialogue that was very bad. And the camera spins! WHY WERE THERE SO GODDAMN MANY SPINS?! The one in the early fight scene in the house (which had almost nauseatingly bad CGI) and the one in the, like, undersea arena duel were both particularly egregious.

It ended up being an okay film, but I enjoyed it far less than I was hoping.

The only performance in Aquaman that crossed the line from cheesy fun bad into outright skin crawlingly bad was Teen Arthur who suuuuuucked

    I thought Aquaman was fine.

It was aggressively dumb, but in a fun way.

I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again, it was fine.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I think it is one of those movies that is saved because it seems that the actors are in on this big dumb action movie, and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Aquaman is three separate movies but none of them seems to be taking itself very seriously, as is appropriate, and everybody in the cast is going ham, so it’s a bit too charming to really call on its flaws.

Aquaman is kind of the antithesis to the first X-men movie in fact.

    Speaking of Aquaman.

FUCK THIS. And TMT is 4x bigger. Sorry Warner Bros we can’t shoot Aquaman 2. Because Jason got run over by a bulldozer trying to stop the desecration of his native land THIS iS NOT HAPPENING. WE ARE NOT LETTING YOU DO THIS ANYMORE. Enough is enough. Go somewhere else. Repost. This is what telescope construction looks like (Subaru Telescope, 1992). The TMT will be four times larger on unscathed land. We must protect our scared mountain from further desecration. #KuKiaiMauna #WeAreMaunaKea #TMTShutdown

Aquaman was fun but also not like, ker-azy

Like it said to me "this is silly right? But it's fun to buy in! Just go with it!" and I did and I liked it.

And it didn't have that thrice cursed MCU filter

I'm glad Jason Momoa is throwing some weight behind this. Hopefully he will get it some more mainstream attention (and hopefully that mainstream attention will be a good thing, but we'll see).

Tarantino, surprising no one, decided to double down on his use of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
"Bruce Lee was kind of an arrogant guy," he said. "The way he was talking, I didn't just make a lot of that up. I heard him say things like that, to that effect."

"People are saying, 'Well, he never said he could beat up Muhammad Ali.' Uh, yeah he did," Tarantino asserted. The director cites the biography Bruce Lee: The Man Only I Knew, which was written by Linda Lee, Bruce's wife. "She absolutely said it."

    [...]

"Could Cliff beat up Bruce Lee? Brad would not be able to beat up Bruce Lee, but Cliff maybe could. If you ask me the question, ‘Who would win in a fight: Bruce Lee or Dracula?’ It’s the same question. It’s a fictional character."

Very, very good idea to publicly pick a fight with the widow and child of the main you fictionalized and put in your movie

Quentin Tarantino calling someone else arrogant should be the new phrase for "pot calling the kettle black"

Even if the dialogue written for a young, brash Bruce Lee, still two years away from his first major Hong Kong film role, was technically accurate, Tarantino still could've worked with the family to make sure the cumulative end result wasn't so offensive.

Unpopular opinion: the negative reaction from his family should be taken with a grain of salt since he has been mythologized over the years and this is the first "negative" mainstream interpretation of the man that's been out there, as far as I can tell. It's like how we all fall over ourselves loving Keanu Reeves. If someday in the future we find out that there is anything about him that isn't true to the fantasy version we've all built up over the years, and that is suddenly portrayed in a film, people are going to lash out at it. It makes sense, but I don't know how fair it would be to do so.

My opinion on the racial aspect doesn't matter, so I won't put my two cents in, but I've seen plenty of Chinese people praising it. Obviously there are people that found it offensive, but outside of his family or someone that is Chinese, I can't really take those complaints seriously. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so whatever. I just truly think that a lot of this is being driven subconsciously by having a hero shown as anything other than strictly heroic? I dunno. Not trying to change any minds, and I'm not even really that invested in the whole thing; just observing.

Or for Tarantino, the pot calling the kettle the N-Word.

I still don’t think it’s an egregious sin for a film that is very clearly playing with ideas of history and myth-making, and how film interacts with both those things, to play around with how a real-life character is portrayed.

Keanu was kind of a joke actor for a long time even up to the matrix. If anything learning more about him is what made him so popular.
