Actually, when someone says cannibals my first thought is of white Europeans, but to be fair I think that's because a lot of famous American cannibals were, and American cannibals are the best, most memorable cannibals around.

there's definitely been a closer amount of attention in the last little while paid to how cannibalism occurred in explorers/settlers and how it all could have been avoided if they just hadn't been racist about asking the native populations how to find food in the region

I mean, I think of the times where they are in longboats and have to travel like 1500 miles, where that wouldn't exactly have helped. Usually it is accompanied by Urine drinking.
"Humans arent a good food source therefore canabalism is more myth than reality" sure is some kind of logic.
I didnt know that Catholics stopped believing in transubstantiation. Gosh, this video is so full of facts.
Habitual cannibalism is more myth than reality (humans are both nutritionally poor and a top level predator. Not a good combination for eatin'). Cultural cannibalism isn't a myth, but it's more associated with the pacific islands than with africa or south america (though present among some groups in both south america and africa).
Cannibalism is sometimes a measure of last resort, and as such it has been documented pretty much everywhere.

Hey so I know there has been a sorta unspoken “let’s avoid directly talking about Contrapoints” thing going on but it seems like this might be a big enough thing that people should be aware. I guess her newest video includes transmedicalist Buck Angel to a significant degree. I don’t know who that is but everyone in the know on my Facebook seems to be in agreement that that is more or less doubling down on the worst interpretations of her comments from last month.

It's interesting that Tom Scott thinks that any of the shelving in a public library that size is being done by librarians at all. Book sorters aren't labor-saving devices for librarians, they're replacing some of the labor currently carried out by dedicated shelvers making something much closer to minimum wage. If a degreed librarian is shelving books in a public library, it's probably a very small library and they're probably not making degreed librarian wages.
I have complicated feelings about automation in general, but it's not really a question of giving librarians more time to perform reference work. It's the same old argument about whether it's moral to automate the worst parts of a job even if it results in fewer people being hired to do that job because of the robots. Like, my library aides love our book sorter because before we had it they had to spend a solid two hours every afternoon scanning barcodes and sorting books onto a shelf, and now they just spend half an hour feeding the daily delivery through the robot. They have a better day at work, and while we lost some hours over the years since we got it, we can't really ask the people we didn't hire what they think about it because they don't work here.
I think everyone would also be in favor of those robots that scan RFID tags at night to make sure there aren't any misshelved books, even though that represents a huge chunk of our shelver-hours per week. Because shelf reading by eye is frankly miserable, and everybody wishes they didn't have to do it.
Also, one of those robots was actually sorting books in order on a shelf, which is a useful thing to threaten my aides with next time they start making fun of my taste in movies.
In closing, it always pisses me off when people talk about how useful libraries are even though we still have books. Tom Scott, I love you like a brother, but the books are still the goddamn point.
Uh. Jedoc. This is scandinavia. We're pretty short on people without degrees, so a lot of the shelving is done by librarians themselves. We do have library aides, but not a lot of them (usually part time jobs for cultural workers or aspiring librarians).

Sure. Thats true. But it seems to me that theyre setting up a riduculous strawman. A cannibal is not someone who only eats human meat, thats a ridiculous idea and easily disproven. A cannibal is someone who eats any human meat. I think the video is deliberately confusing habitual and cultural cannibalism. Despite what the video says there is evidence of ritual consumption of human flesh in the Caribbean. But i guess because it wasnt for food it doesnt count as true cannibalism.

Buck Angel is a transman porn performer, with a very masculine presenting body and face, and a vagina. At least that is what he was famous for, I dont know if he still performs or still has a vagina.
I didn't know what transmedicalism was until I just looked it up, and I'm sad that people feel the need to other and exclude folks, even when they're experiencing the same marginalization. Human's capacity to tribalize never ceases to depress me.

Buck Angel voices John Waters for one quote at about 27:30, in the tradition of "get a bunch of recognizable names to do voice acting for you". If that is the standard for "significant degree", then HBomberguy, Philosophytube, and Maggie Mae Fish are also in the video to a significant degree.
I'm not nearly qualified or in tune with the conversation enough to pass any sort of judgment, and there are certainly other parts of the video that clearly seem like shots against her critics, but I think there's a pretty big difference between "read a single quote from somebody else" and like, including somebody for their own personal views. She didn't have Buck Angel on to talk about his opinions on trans people, or even feature him as one of her examples of trans culture and opulence.
A person accused of dismissing the existence of nonbinary people and focusing on passing above almost all else bringing on a trans person who definitely does that isn't just getting some random famous person to perform for them.
It's important to note that this is part of a larger trend people in trans communities have been uncomfortable with when it comes to Contrapoints' videos. She has a tendency to present a version of transgender life that passes high important on passing and tends to marginalize or complain about people with different values. It's hot on the heels of just a few weeks ago where she complained about nonbinary people making her own life hard because it normalizes the idea of having non-obvious pronouns and she wants to be immediately seen as a she/her woman.
Buck Angel's own viewpoints have a tendency to line up with these Contrapoints viewpoints that people have been uncomfortable with. People remember an old-school "Pass or die" mentality in trans discussion and they don't like it. Broadly speaking people also are wary of the fact that the trans voice that has been most elevated by cis people is one that represents views on the importance of passing and would generally be considered traditionally feminine.
I'm not going to hang anyone for watching Contrapoints. But I would strongly recommend people keep in mind that she is not an authority on trans people. And I would probably side-eye you a little if she was the trans person you looked to as an explanation for what being trans is. A lot of people in the trans community are not fully comfortable with her and the power she has to express her particular viewpoints as a result of her popularized platform.

To be clear, I am not disagreeing with the existence of a trend, or with the idea that Buck's inclusion in the video is a point to be taken in context with the rest of the video. I'm just clarifying that the context of him being included "to a significant degree" is the same sort of cameo-VA appearance that is very common in these videos, because the degree to which he's included in the video is also a relevant point.
Does Buck Angel really prioritize passing over all else?
Because like
He famously showed off his vagina a LOT
Content warning: Self-identification with slurs
Looking at his Twitter, and again, as somebody who doesn't have qualifications in this area of discourse, his specific philosophy seems to be that he identifies as a transsexual, believes that transsexuals are binary and passing-focused and other people are transgender, and does not like being considered anything other than "a man", including "trans" or a "trans man". I have no idea if this is a personal philosophy or something common with his generation/social group that (obviously) clashes extremely strongly with modern discourse and polite language surrounding trans people.
I very much did not have the full story here but yeah I don’t think the amount of inclusion noticeably effects the result. I wanted to take CP’s quotes in the best possible light and I’m sympathetic to the idea that it needs to be ok to express frustration at necessary changes to culture that you agree with.
But if I’m someone who has been reasonably accused of belittling and shaming people who choose to exist outside the binary the past thing I would do is include another person who has been accused of same in my very next video. That seems like some alt-right youtube kinda shit to me. Include them just enough that the people who agree with the viewpoint you believe but can’t express get the message but with plausible deniability. I’ve been accused of overthinking things and this might be one of those times but that’s the feel I get and it disappoints me.
It’s just a really bad look that seems almost impossible to be accidental is all I’m saying.

I think the inclusion was probably a bad choice, but there's definitely a difference between including Buck in a cameo when he's not famous for being a transmedicalist, and actually saying or presenting Buck's transmedicalist views. Like, I doubt we'd say that Contra including Olly in her video means she's trying to subtweet that she wants to abolish the concept of rental property; there's a distinction between what views she actually wants to convey and what views she may only view as "not disqualifying to associate with". It's perfectly fair to criticize her for associating with Buck given everything, and I'd agree with that criticism, but I think it's very possible to jump the gun at how seriously the views of the cameo voices are meant to be taken, much like it's possible to jump the gun at what "a significant degree" of involvement means.
One thing I would like higher framerate movies to become more common for is camera pans. When it's a bright scene and the camera pans around at an appreciable speed at 24 fps it feels like I'm going to get a headache, is just so goddamned flickery.
Is it just me or have camera pans become worse in the last decade or so? I swear older films used to have long pans that were fast but still readable to a degree, but nowadays there are pans that are like "here's six seconds of you not being able to register anything well"
My guess is that pans are mostly used to hide cuts. I have no proof. But it explains why you'd see faster pans. Because the point is to it blurry and hide the cut.
Oh no, I'm not talking about short whip pans, I mean like, deliberate long pans where everything just turns into a messy blur except it's not even a smooth blur it gets choppy in the frames somehow.
Is this a by-product of shooting on digital or something, I wonder?
Natalie has explicitly said transmedicalism is bad, but I also wouldn't be surprised if she included Buck to deliberately annoy people, because she's still a troll at heart.
