I suggested GIMP up until someone noted that you have to install X for it, and that apparently is not a fun process.
What the hell is X11? It is asking for it.
X11 is how UNIX-based systems usually show windows (not technically accurate, but works for explanation). Think of it as one level under the window manager (OS X's interface [which does not use X, apparently), Gnome, KDE, etc).
What I can't tell you is why OS X doesn't use X11, or why GIMP would need it on OS X.
