While we're reminescing, I want to throw an appreciation post out for the forums as a whole but specifically this thread. It's weird to think that this place has been a fixture for half of my life at this point, and even weirder to consider that a busted old internet thread about dorky growling music has had a measurable effect on my life, but here we are. I was never particularly active even during my heyday but y'all still helped to shape the way I view music (and, by extension, art as a whole) which opened the door to a lot of experiences I never would have had and people I never would have met otherwise. I'm not trying to draft a Xanga screed here, just wanted to let the internet know that all good things in my life are a direct result of this thread making me listen to Trollhammaren 15 years ago.

Well at least that's your dad...my WIFE listens to pop country...although there was that one time I found an Iron Maiden CD lying randomly in her car, and it wasn't mine.
Auto sees the Maiden logo and thinks to himself, "This could be it. The turning point.". His heart starts to race at the thought of enjoying the same music with his wife. He looks closer at the CD. It's Virtual XI.

My dad listens mostly to classical, with the occasional 50s/60s pop song here and there. On rare occasions, he'll play some Led Zeppelin.
Mom's tastes are not very refined at all. Mostly pop from the 60s-80s? As I was getting into metal, she claimed that she liked the Metallica stuff I was listening to, and she seemed to enjoy Ministry's "N.W.O." which is hilarious (some people related to Al lived in our neighborhood, which made my mom interested by proxy).
My wife and I share the same general tastes in music, although we have different favorites. I don't think she has shared my recent interest in Slough Feg, for example. She enjoys Dimmu Borgir way more than me.
My parents when I became old enough to form my own tastes and started listening to butt rock & nu metal: "that's... fine. You like what you like. Are you sure you don't want to listen to Garth Brooks instead though?"

It's one of a small handful of albums with harsher vocals he's gotten into and bought, growls and screams usually equal an immediate thumbs-down from him. But he's gotten big in power, folk, and symphonic metal with cleans over the last few years and he's 64.
He's played jazz trumpet for over 50 years and always appreciates chops and musicianship and will give anything at least 2-3 listens to investigate before judging. He was brave enough to see Epica with me, though Marc's vocals were a point of contention and he was at best neutral on the experience. Nightwish is much more in his wheelhouse and he's seen them with me 3 times and had a blast everytime.

Finally picked up a physical copy of that Lotus Thief album I was raving about early this year, kind of New Age/post-metal/doom mix. Really like the art & colors on the booklet cover inside the digipak.
Also got the new Magick Touch CD in physical, which I'm loving more and more as I listen. New Hail Spirit Noir, Havukruunu and Incantation should be here before long.
A number of the Portuguese black metal bands have been churning out some curious stuff lately. Some have been praising the new GAEREA, I've got a dissonant new ONIRIK album in my promo-bin which is interesting, and then there's the new OMITIR album which has a folksy flare to it.
Man, what a surprise this song was. Seems like a mix of their old Remission style stuff, with the (IMO excellent) vocals from Brann & more rock inspired sound from their newer stuff and then a whole new bit to their sound at the end. Like a whole different guitar tone or something at the end there.
Definitely the most excited to hear a Mastodon album I've been in a while. And I say this as a rare fan of Once More 'Round the Sun.
I'm digging it and WILL buy the album, but I'm not gonna pretend like Cold Dark Place wasn't a nearly flawless execution of that mood.
I actually dropped out of Mastodon-ing with The Hunter and Once More Round the Sun.

My most recent album is actually been Boston's self-titled because for some reason I didn't have it despite absolutely adoring no less than 3 songs off of it for my entire life.
That new mastodon track was a surprise. I haven't liked anything from them really since Skye, but that new song has me actually excited for the new album. Really came out of nowhere for me

A new Anaal Nathrakh. This is more of the metal side of their sound and much less electronics.
Pretty cool new album from this Swedish band, mighty epic doom stuff, the vocals are like a more growly mix of Cirith Ungol and Anvil, occasionally also some Cathedral vibes, and they've got lots of classic fantasy & horror themes in the lyrics. Dad-doom for sure, but leaves an impression.
I’ve failed as an American because I didn’t know about rotted life records before this week and now I’ve been working backwards through their releases thanks to the sedimentum / phobophilic split
If you're into the primitive old school death metal labels like Maggot Stomp and Rotted Life Records, you'll probably want to check out the bands on the new Gurgling Gore tape label: Seep, Writhing Shadows and Wharflurch.

Edit: And keeping with the UK theme, veteran thrashers Onslaught are back, but Sy Keeler is gone and Dave Garnett is handling the vocals now.
I've gotten little out of any of these last four reunion era Onslaught albums. I don't know what it is, they just feel a bit too generic modern thrash, like Rob Dukes era Exodus or Warbringer. Definitely a lot of West Coast 80s riffs (I hear some Vio-lence riffs). Powerful production, and the aggression is unquestionable, but absolutely zero riffs that stick out for me.

Huh, just noticed a new Ulver is out in a few weeks. Looks like it follows in the footsteps of their last album and they continue not to be a metal band, of course (they haven't been one in decades), but I find it pleasant.
