It's awesome, but there's only one real song that wasn't released as a single: Trauma Bonds. Still, I'm not disappointed and I ordered the vinyl! I haven't listened to nearly as much stuff this year but this album hits all the right spots for me.

Two Minutes to Late Night is selling a few of their covers on bandcamp for 24-hours only. It's their second set of covers on there; I missed out on the first one. I am sad that the Tom Petty cover is not among them. Also sad that I missed out on last month's set of covers.

I listened to the new Haken on a whim, first thing I've really checked out from them since their debut. They've definitely gotten heavier, and Virus is undoubtedly a well-done album, but it's almost off-putting how identityless it is - every passage plays like a "guess the band" game featuring every major prog metal band of the last 20 years. The main throughline is Between the Buried and Me by way of Dream Theater but there are moments of Cynic, 2000s Opeth, 2010s Opeth, Periphery, Porcupine Tree, Katatonia, and probably others that I'm missing. There's a deftness to the execution that keeps it from devolving into the compositional mess that it could easily be, but it's so heavily indebted to its obvious influences that it never quite coalesces into its own thing. It's a shame because there are a lot of great ideas here that are pulled off near-flawlessly, I just wish they weren't so transparently copy + pasted from other artists.

Affinity was the first Haken album I bought by them, and I saw them live shortly after that. Besides that, I only own The Mountain and I feel like I've had my fill of them.
I did some reading up on Martin Birch this morning. Fear of the Dark was the last album he did work on, and he retired at 42?! Amazing.
These guys have put out a bunch of stuff lately, but they just keep on getting better. This is their finest release so far. British band playing dissonant atmospheric black metal.
I picked up Wreckage of Stars some time ago and I'm comparing the two, and the new one is a lot more proggy with more cleans, but in my opinion it's way more memorable with some excellent melodic sections punctuated with pulsing double bass and old Gojira levels of heavy.
"Years in Frigid Light" is just a straight up banger.
It's good, sounds a bit too much like their old albums, which I like, but I like their last 2 albums more.
I miss the days when albums would leak hella early, if there was a track list and album length it used to mean I was guaranteed to find it. Not anymore, haha.
Yeah, it's not as inventive in the riffing as the last two albums, which are also my faves, along with the debut. The other two are also pretty good though.
October gonna be a Swedish blackening fest with that and Necrophobic coming.
Judas Priest announced a concert in my area for October 2021. Snagged a ticket right behind the sound mixers. We better be over this Covid shit in 14 months.

Only canceled show this year that pissed me off was Symphony X's 25th Anniversary tour with Primal Fear opening. Though it finally did get rescheduled for next June and I'm in the process of trying to transfer my purchase to the new date.

Yep. Also roomed with Paul Gilbert and was in an in-between band I can't remember the name of with him when Pablo was putting Racer X on the back burner and getting Mr. Big together.
I want to say Satchel also taught at GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology. The Berklee of the West Coast in the 80s and 90s) round the same time.

Random aside: there is so much music posted in these threads over the years, and it's hard for me to keep up. I know I'm always missing out on cool stuff I could discover due to my brain's bandwidth only being able to process so much. I'm not complaining about this, mind you, but it's just my excuse for revealing that I final gave Anaal Nathrakh a listen and realized they are definitely for me.
Kinda funny, Hizaki is really into it and hamming it up for a non-existnent audience while Teru looks like a dom who's expression is asking "Who farted?"

it is almost the only prog metal song that if somebody else wanders past and hears several passages from it they will immediately ask you who it is
It's a great song to start with for Haken. I think my favorite on the album is "The Architect" though.
