NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra Fan Problems

Okay... to put it simply the fan just died, right now. So I'm typing this up as quickly as possible, the fan has been making quite the loud buzzing sort of sound lately likely from it having to spin quicker than normal. I am unsure what the problem is, it may be the video card, or its fan or even the computers power supply. I would imagine it could also be dust... though as well it might just be past its prime, it is an old machine and I've had it for nearly 5 years.

Here is the information from my DxDiag, hopefully someone will be able to give me an answer. The fan just started back up again... though I don't know how long it'll last. I understand I may need to get a new card, but it'd be best to get some advice on this first.

Sadly the entire thing would not fit so I left in overall information for my computer and the display area of the report.

    The problem is the fan died. It is purely mechanical. It is most likely crammed with dust, or there is a cable touching it. You should have cracked the case immediately when it started happening and cleaned it. The bearing are most likely shot now so you have two options. Put on an aftermarket cooler that probably costs more than the card, or put in another card.

    Before you do that, you should isolate the exact fan that is dying. Use your ear, or stop each fan temporarily (A tiny amount of pressure at the center is usually enough) long enough to tell which fan is going. If it is your cpu heat sink fan and not your video card, you will be in much worse shape if you let it continue.

    Iam certain that is the video card's fan, I felt the fan when I heard the sound it was making stop, and that fan had stopped, so I would figure that means it was the video card fan. I really had little choice, I could've cleaned it out, but I'd have to go through my friend's father first, because the computer belongs to him. Though I'll mention to him that before we install a new video card, we should probably clean out the computer for dust.

    If your case's design allows for it, a high flow 120mm fan positioned right over the heatsinks for the videocard drawing air in could potentially save your hide. It's still not ideal and I had that card up until a month ago, so I know you need a new one anyhow :P
