Rygar there isn't a special election for a Senator. There is an appointment up until the next general election then whoever wins that serves out the remainder of the original senator's term. That appointment is what matters, especially given that committee chairs are what hang in the balance.
That said, I don't believe the Dems would be prevented from taking control of the Senate. There'd be something of a race between the few remaining, increasingly alienated moderate Republicans to go before the cameras and switch parties. In his speech, televised on pretty much every network on Earth, the defecting Senator would basically say, "the American people demanded new leadership when they went to the polls, and we need to respect that."
I don't know that there are enough of them left to actually make this happen. Snowe is the most obvious candidate, but she just cruised to an overwhelming victory in 06 as a Republican in Maine. Collins, maybe? I don't know who else is really wavering, since we knocked Chaffee out.
