I just hope that this is awesome. I'm sure we all do.
I like the idea of showing happy Rapture descending into shit, but I think it'll probably follow the game really closely. I don't know. The volume of the game was- er, oh wait. Spoilers. Seriously, if you haven't played through it.
The real gravity in the game's twist came when you realized that YOU had been doing all of these things and had been manipulated - they'll have to make the protagonist realllly likable/emotional for it to work, because if he's like, "OH SHIT, WHAT HAVE I DONE" and you don't really care...? Then... fail.
Also, please make Sander Cohen fucking AWESOME. Get the guy who did the voice acting to just.. play the character on-screen. Or don't ever show him, or whatever.

Part of that comes from the nature of the way we play games, so I'd be surprised if they tried to include it in the same way. It'd make more sense to go for a different angle.
I'm still saying the movie should be about Rapture before Bioshock. Hell, make the last shot of the film a shot of that lighthouse and you see a plane crashing.
So considering other video-game to movie translations this should be about "Big daddy" a cyborg cop in the year 2020, who fights crime with "Little sister" the AI that lives inside his hover ferrari?
obviously, the "big daddy" would be voiced by eddie murphy and every other character in the movie would be played by him too.

All I ask of this movie is a decent portrayal of The Wild Bunny. Everything else is gravy.
I totally agree that it shouldn't be about Jack, though. The twist would completely lose it's edge, and the Ryan/Fontaine shenanigans would make twice as compelling a movie.
Yeah, Silent Hill had some film maker pedigree going for it too and look how that turned out.
I can't stress how much my judgement is reserved on this.
How did it turn out... good? I thought it was a good adaption of the video games.
It's been a while since I've seen Silent Hill, so you'll forgive me if I can't give you a terribly specific reasons, but I didn't enjoy it. I certainly thought it was better than pretty much every video game adaptation, but that's a pretty low bar.

I second Silent Hill being a good movie. But saying that I've never played the first game and only played the second game for an hour or so. So finding out about Silent Hill was a new experience for me without expectations. I also thought the first Resident Evil although by no means was a cinematic masterpiece very entertaining, and that’s what movies should be about being entertained.
Yeah, I loved arguing in favor of Bioshock's brilliance when the inevitable critical backlash came, and even I won't bother with this. When the main theme of the game is the futility and illusion of choice, rendered extremely well through personal interaction, and you decide to remake it in a non-interactive medium... you're missing the point.
I mean, obviously I'd like the Bioshock story to be heard by as many people as possible, so dissemination is nice, but something essential will be lost. Pass.
On one side "booo, no game will ever be made into a good film because it hasn't happened yet"
Looking at this quickly, I thought it said "A ROCK'EM SOCK'EM ACTION FUCK"
Ditto.
I'm happy that I'm not the only one.
Look, this is PA, a place where I reckon a majority of people would be able to look at any household object and come up with at least 3 ways to turn it into something sexual. FLICK to fuck isn't that much of a stretch.
Must include Beyond The Sea. No, the entire Bioshock soundtrack.
Who composed the original Bioshock music? Like The Ocean on His Shoulders? Awesome, depressing theme song. There Will Be Blood soundtrack reminds me of Bioshock as well.
EDIT - I just watched Renaissance (Daniel Craig, cel shady goodness) and it's soundtrack stands out to me as well.

I would wet myself if this was the case.
And the absolutely required "building of Rapture montage" needs to be done in black and white, old newsreel style footage.

First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
Soundtrack must include "Little Sister" by Queens of the Stone Age.
It would be awesome to see the rise and fall of Rapture instead of a retread of the game's story. I hope they take some of the recordings that Jack finds in the game and act them out.
Have characters that we (those who have played the game) know and love show up as cameos or in the background, but deal more with the Big Daddies / Little Sisters, the actual discovery of the slugs, and how the grand utopia is built up before things come crashing down in the war, with people making hard choices and giving up their humanity to fight people who were once literally their friends and neighbours.
There's cinematic potential there in grand themes without looking directly at what we know as being 'what happens after'.

I don't think they are going to do it right. Unless kevin levine actually is directly involved, it will suck. Mortal kombat is a great example of this. They made a fun movie about people beating the shit out of each other and they didn't rape the original plot. It did have some of the originating people involved in the game and it helped significantly.

Gans is a crappy director, thats why I didn't like the SH movie. I liked it the first time, mostly because of how much it looks like the game, but the second time the flaws were very apparent. I would recommend "Jacob's Ladder" over this.
I also enjoy the mortal kombat movie better under its original title, "enter the dragon".
Vorboski or however you spell his name, is actually a decent director, despite some mis-steps with the pirates series. I think he has a good sense of mood, which is going to be huge for this movie. But I feel the number one reason game movies suck is because usually the people making them don't know how to make good movies. Fanboys might be concerned with staying true to the game's plot/setting, but honestly I only care about good movies, regardless of what is based on.
One thing, though. Unless they make a lot of changes to the plot, aren't they risking being sued by whoever owns the film rights to Atlas Shrugged? Bioshock clearly would not exist as a story without that book.

There's enough differences that I'd think they'd be ok. Otherwise whoever owns the rights to 1984 and a host of other literature would be sueing people left and right.
The thing that really concerns me is I can't see how you could have such a meaningful plot twist in any other medium. The commentary they were going for doesn't work at all.
I'm definitely intrigued, more so because the director is a pretty good director and is a big fan of the game. It's too early to get all "RAWR IMPOSSIBLE TO BE GOOD MOVIE!!!!" IMO
On one hand, the lack of interactivity completely takes the punch out of the game's story.
On the other hand, the portion of the story that you play through in the game is the climax of the entire tale, so to stop before Jack is ever created would leave the movie without a solid ending.
So it's going to be awful unless they basically make up a story of their own, set it in Rapture, and use something similar to some of the game's characters.
At which point, why even bother calling it Bioshock?
Shouldn't the thread title just be something like, "No, says Hollywood, it belongs in Theaters"?
I also think as long as they only use the setting from the game and write a new plot, it has a chance. Although currently the only game-movie adaptation I am interested in is "American McGee's Alice". I hope that eventually gets made.
I'm still saying the movie should be about Rapture before Bioshock. Hell, make the last shot of the film a shot of that lighthouse and you see a plane crashing.
This is such a cool idea. The environments of the game truly lend itself perfectly to the creation of a fantastic movie. That being said i proceed with hope but also much skepticism (though that may be just a gamer in his natural state)
Either way, they will get my money for it, the question is: "Will they have stolen it or earned it"
A film showing the fall of Rapture (Hell, the building and rise of it could be done over the credits. Imagine it, something like the beginning of I, Robot as water swirls around and Andrew Ryan 'asks you a question...'), would be fantastic, I would quite happily pay to see the civil war and descent into madness of the entire population
The Silent Hill film was good. It has some weird story decisions, but it ultimately kept the spirit of the game pretty well. And it might just be me, but I can forgive a lot in a film if it has an excellent visual design (See: The Cell).
It has to be one of the best looking horror movies ever.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
Dammit, I had a Bioshock nightmare. (Lots of outrunning flaming oil on the floor.) The movie needs to balance out the history and storytelling with nightmarish dystopia horror.

Of course, when you look at it that way, it would ruin the game for people who haven't played it.
Yah, the more I think about it... this is gonna be very hard to pull off.

I thought, as a horror flick, it was better than average.
EDIT: Especially when you compare it to complete trash like Stay Alive, which came out around the same time.
