Yeah, you have expectations that've been conditioned through years of playing games. Developers use these to help bring you into unfamiliar territory (same with films and the like, using camera angles or audio cues to help you know how to react to the scene). That's where you get games like BioShock or Braid (yes I know there are others, those are the first to the top of my head) that play with those expectations and use those to their own ends, rather than to just help you play the game.
