Given a set of 58 items, how many unique sets of three can be formed?
if order matters and you can't use the same item more than once, 185136
    I get 30,856.

    n(n-1)(n-2)/6

(i.e., I think you missed the divide by 6 part . . . but I might just be making that up).
30856 is if order doesn't matter. as in 123 and 321 are equal.
Sorry, yeah, I meant that order does matter, as if we were talking about physical items (so A, B & C is the same as B, A & C).

    Example, a simple set of 4 items: 1, 2, 3 & 4.

    123
    124
    134
    143

    (so no 321, 423, etc.)

    4(3)(2) = 24, divide by 6 to get 4.

    you mean order doesn't matter.

if the order of the numbers doesn't matter than 321 and 123 are identical because the both contain the numbers 1,2 and 3.

Bah, he still hasn't passed his brilliant run on Roseanne.

Didn't he end up beating up Roseanne's sister? And then Roseanne found out about it and Dan nonchalantly left, gave him a beating and was then picked up by the cops?

    You're right.

But isn't the formula correct? I'm no expert - this is just something I came up with while bored a while ago and you sound like you know more about this than me.

    Unique pairs: n(n-1)/2

    Unique triples: n(n-1)(n-2)/6

    Unique sets of four: n(n-1)(n-2)(n-3)/24

I had a scare last night. I was upstairs and I caught a fragment of movie dialogue echoing up from the living room.

    "...cop shocks, cop brakes..."

And hey, I thought, it's The Blues Brothers. So I go downstairs and the missus is watching it. I settle down next to her and then, like it's nothing, she casually mentions that she's never seen this movie before and is it any good?

Friends, I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or rip the engagement ring right off her finger and throw it off the balcony.

Look at the lower half of his resume. Mostly TV shows up until the late 90s, and even then, he was still on ER.

if order matters and you can repeat numbers:

    n^r

if order matters and you can't repeat numbers:

    n!/((n-r)!)

if order doesn't matter and you can repeat numbers:
