Gallente has amazing capital ships, especially the Thanatos, Nyx and Erebus...but that's about it. I am one of those unlucky fuckers that has Gallente BS 5 and Gallente Cruiser 5. Oh well, I just turned the character in to a Nyx pilot so he could fly one of the few ship classes where the Gallente variant is considered the "best".
gallente cruiser 5 is the only goddamn good thing prior to cap for gallente
Sort of. I mean, the Ishtar can rat it's ass off, but a Dominix can do it just as well for a third the price and insurable, if you like drones.
The only other thing I can think of that Gallente Cruiser (eventually) gets you that is worth a shit is the Lacheses.
In my defense though, I trained Gallente BS 5 when the Megathron was considered one of the best snipers. It's bonuses are actually still really boss, if railguns and blasters didn't completely fucking suck. No one uses snipers anymore, and blasters have such limited engagement envelop there is little point. But fuck me if damage + tracking isn't still a boss bonus.

Yah, but if I wanted to spend that kind of money on a ratting ship, I'd go balls to the wall, cross-train to Caldari and fly a Tengu :P
I do remember a time when the Ishtar was a decent PvP ship though, before it got nerfed.
Ok, never recommend to a newbie that they should ever train gallente. I don't care who you are or how well meaning you are, don't do it. There are very few worthwhile gallente ships and these few worthwhile gallente ships are worthwhile for a very short list of reasons. If you don't know those reasons, don't train gallente.
If you know why those very few gallente ships are useful, then you also know not to tell newbies to train gallente.
So stop doing it.
Newbies: train minmatar or caldari. Amarr is not strictly a bad choice, per se, but it is a very limited one. If you plan on joining MerchI, go caldari. Well, if you plan on joining merchI, the first thing you should do is fucking join merchI and then read our forums about what you should train. Then train what we tell you to train as it has been scientifically proven to be the best skillplan for newbies. That skill plan is a little out of date now since the learning skills were removed, but you should still follow it and ignore any skills that don't exist any more.
Thanks I'll have to look that up. Yes I plan on joining MerchI when I'm allowed, I'm running around in a Drake right now and training Minmatar ships as well. This game seems alot more fun when you have people to talk to about it. My first foray many years ago was a complete bust.

the tengu owns and it's what I'm gonna train to(I'm piratically there already) after I get into a fleet scrop in a monthish
EDIT: however, tengu takes :effort: whereas an ishtar allows you to fly to a sanctum and then go make a sandwich and watch some porn and come back 15 minutes later and 30 million richer
The ishtar is nice because you can run every plex except for the 10/10 and the equivalent final escalations of the Prov HQ and Fleet Staging Point.
But again, Gallente are NOT ships you go to pvp with, unless you are talking caps/supercaps.
I recently got into an ishtar, and i'm quite liking it for pve. I would never ever recomend anyone train gallente early on though. Train for all the other far more useful shit first.
It's not really an official function in MerchI but if someone wanted to run such an operation I'm sure it would be ok, probably even appreciated.
Good enough for me. I'm mostly looking to find out if it represents something useful rather than suicide or an incredible waste of time.
Last time I played we had a group called TopGoon that sort of did this.
TopGoon is still around, right?
I was reading their thread in the SA forums the other night, and I honestly can't tell. There are certainly some people who log in and call themselves TopGoon.
Yes, topgoon is still around but we don't really do that much roaming, we pretty much only hotdrop which is to say sit on a Blackops battleship in recons and Stealth bombers waiting for our bait to snag someone.
Isn't going afk while your ishtar rats a phenomenally bad idea if you are trying to make isk? Even if it's unprobable roams will check the havens and sanctums in an area they are going through.
So what do you guys advise for a nub to train up for ratting in high sec? I don't have access to 0.0 yet so trying to keep my self interested till I get approval.

This is not a thing that is feasible. "Ratting in high sec" has like a 2 isk/hour return so... Impairor?
High sec missions do exist. For that, take your pick of combat cruiser. Cruisers are fun.

Sorry, I misspoke. I meant mission running. Ratting in high sec is an effort in futility.

it's only a half joke, you should always watch local
I've lost two battleships rattting in Dek while kinda-sorta afk. There's roaming bands that come through and some are competent enough. That Tengu is probably first on the list for an AWOXer too.

Bollocks I say. Gallente is what you fly when you have balls the size of a Titan and no fear of death. Hybrids may be shit right now, but I'll be damned if a Suicide Brutix still doesn't make people shit their pants when it rolls up as part of a gang and starts removing massive chunks off of whatever it targets. I'm also a huge fan of the Suicide Blasterazu and my gang Ishtar. Gallente isn't easy to fly, but with some fitting creativity and the aformentioned massive cojones, they're still viable.
I won't hesitate to agree that railguns are fucking terrible though. I avoid using them at all costs. If I need to snipe, I'll drag out a Zealot or someshit like that. Hooray for being cross trained in everything but Caldari.

train up to a tengu or nighthawk and shit out missiles and don't even give a fuck
I heard somewhere that Tengu was getting a nerf on the next patch or something. Will it be as good afterwards? Tengu being the Strategic cruiser right? How much do they usually run?
And what type of ship is the nighthawk?

The ships he named are long term goals as they are incredibly skill intensive. The Tengu is a T3 Strategic cruiser. The nighthawk is a command ship. Both will run you into hundreds of millions to billions of isk to purchase and fit.

For lvl 3's a drake is more than enough. Tengu and Nighthawk are excellent ships but for the here and now simply go with the drake. You can put those two down as serious long term destinations if you want of course.

So since search is down, I had to come here to try to background check you.
You, sir, are a posting superstar of some note.
What the fuck.

I might die in fleet combat for the first time in weeks.
This assumes, of course, that Goonswarm is not rent asunder in a civil war over our alliance logo.

Don't listen to this person. For true lvl 3 goodness use a Prophecy.
No, seriously, use the Drake.
