The Department of Computer Science is carrying out research in order to
understand people's behaviour within virtual reality. Virtual reality has
many applications, and of particular interest to us is how much people's
experiences and behaviours within virtual reality match those in real life.
This has many applications in training, rehearsal, and therapy.
We are looking for male volunteers over the age of 18 to take part in a
particular study.
This study will take place at the Department of Computer Science, University
College London, between the dates of December 8, 2010 and January 31, 2011.
You will enter into a virtual environment during which time some virtual
events will happen. The period in virtual reality would last about 40
minutes. During your time in the virtual reality, you will need to wear some
special clothing over your regular clothes. During this time you would also
be video recorded as part of our data collection methods.
At the conclusion of this experience there would be a short interview.
The whole period would last about 1 hour.
You would be paid 7 pounds for this.
All data collected would be kept entirely confidential and would only be
reported statistically, and no individual would ever be identified in any
publication. The data would be stored in a form where your data is recorded
only under an identification number, and not by name.
Do I do it?
I participated in a few experiments for my school and none of them were bad. In my psych class our professor gave us the option of writing 5 one page papers or participating in 5 hours worth of studies and they have this website set up so you can view all the things going on that need volunteers. I got to drive an RC car around and push block while having to rely on a video stream from a camera mounted on the car for navigation, press buttons depending on sequences of vibrations from this weird belt, issue voice commands to one of those little aibo cat/dog things, and... some other stuff.
Overall it was pretty cool, but there was a whole lot of on a scale from 1 to 5, 1 being disagree strongly and 5 being agree strongly how did you feel about X.

The dude contributed under a million dollars to his father's investment firm, and withdrew tens of millions of dollars. He either knew that the whole thing was a sham, or was a staggeringly incompetent employee.
He basically helped to murder at least three people so he could make a bunch of money, and his family is still probably going to make a few million off of it. I can't even begin to feel the slightest bit of sympathy for a huge asshole like that.
His family won't make anything. There is no money. He was being sued by too many people and agencies to list. His family won't even get an insurance payout now. Not to mention, like Elldren said, he's the one who brought the whole thing down.
Deposited $745,000 with Madoff Securities, LLC; withdrew $18,100,000. His family will declare bankruptcy or settle out, and walk away with a couple million, just like Madoff's wife.

There is no feasible way that any person who even begins to be a trader can think that they will make $18.1 million off of a $745,000 investment in simple stock trading. So, make your choice: so staggeringly incompetent as to be mentally retarded, or complicit.
