EDIT: Also how Summer Glau looks really is ridiculously fluid.

Huh. May have to watch that.

It is delightfully over-the-top. And has a ridiculous number of great actors in it.

Maybe I should make a thread about whether Speculative Invoicing is a scumbag activity or not.

Never heard of it but it certainly sounds that way.

    This is speculative invoicing:

"We claim that you've illegally downloaded a movie. Give us 500 dollars or we'll sue for 20,000 dollars."

That sounds like I could counter-sue or press charges for blackmail and/or extortion.

Does the fact that what they're using to extort money is false change the validity of such an idea?

Despite a thorough search, readers will struggle to find a good word said about the work of the ‘anti-piracy’ lawyers. The judgement, though, is damning with good reason. It is made abundantly clear that HHJ Birss is wise to the genuine motivation behind the actions of these individuals.

He wrote, “Simple arithmetic shows that the sums involved in the Media CAT exercise must be considerable. 10,000 letters for Media CAT claiming £495 each would still generate about £1 Million if 80% of the recipients refused to pay and only the 20% remainder did so.”

It has always been clear to unbiased observers that the principal incentive behind speculative invoicing was revenue generation for the lawyers involved. Birss was under no illusions about Media CAT’s claims to be a ‘copyright protection society’. “No copyright lawyer would use that term to describe Media CAT,” he stated. A ‘copyright exploitation company’ would perhaps be a marginally more accurate term but Crossley and Bowden’s single-minded misapplication of copyright law with the intention of extracting cash settlements from threatened broadband subscribers means that a number of the other labels that may also have been applied to them could also be seen as accurate.

    Hey, [chat]!

    Whatup?!?

    I'm apparently a horrible human.

    And the world is shit.

    So overall: no change.

    I call bullshit

Nah, just look at the last few pages of me - I'm apparently definitely horrible.

The world is shit because this patient I've been meeting up with cancer was buried yesterday and I had no idea he'd died. Cause of that I feel bad and the world is shit.

Um, I can only assume this patient was yours. And, by parsing that, I have to think... you take care of a lot of people. Not only do you take care of them, you save a lot of lives. Sometimes... people die. People you like, even people you love. But, if you've done your best to make them feel loved... well, that's:

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO.

Nah, I'm just a medical student my involvement has 0 impact on their care.

I would rather this "medical student follows a patient with cancer" project didn't exist. Because it is terrible. It's supposed to allow us to follow some one and learn how it is to have cancer. Thing is I don't need that shit in my life - I like the professional distance I can maintain and do not want to get super close and intrude on someone's personal life and illness.

And, no, I never thanked them for participating in this project and this makes me feel bad - also because I didn't speak to him at some point when he knew he was going into palliative care. This entire malarkey has been terrible, and I am spending the day moping.

Their idea is to go download a movie themselves, record the IPs of all peers, demand user information from the ISP, and send those mails.

Either way, the judge is having a field day kicking this law firm all over the place.

    The judge is... enthusiastic.
ACS:Law, the UK law firm that sent thousands of legal threats to alleged illegal downloaders on behalf of pornographers, has been told that it can't simply drop its suits against its victims and avoid having its methods scrutinized by the courts. The judge has clearly got ACS's number, characterising its strategy thus: "Why take cases to court and test the assertions when one can just write more letters and collect payments from a portion of the recipients?"
Mr Crossley, who was not present in court, had said that he fully intended to prosecute the cases before pulling out.
The judgment, however, cast doubt on that - pointing out that one of the reasons given for discontinuing the cases was that crucial documents were in storage.

"If true, it is extraordinary," said the ruling. "A party who keeps key documents which are cited in the particulars of claim in storage is not a party anxious to progress their claim in court."

ACS:Law announced that it was shutting down last week, and MediaCAT has also been wound up.

Mr Crossley is now the subject of an investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

ARGH I hate the radiator in my room, it is obnoxiously loud, I can't even get a good night's sleep with it anymore

So now that I am (rudely) awake, what should I do. I have a class at 9:15. I still need to throw some stuff together for staying over at my boy's tonight, and I need to get ready for class. It takes about 10 minutes to get there. Should I try to shower at this point or hold off until tonight?

Carl Bildt, Swedish foreign minister, thinks that the UN should safeguard freedom of expression on the internet.

    He speaks with forked tongue.

He cannot possibly be unaware that USA has veto rights in the UN. USA will never allow something like this, because it would also protect WikiLeaks, just to name one big elephant in the room.

Any resolution to this effect will be incredibly toothless and ineffectual thanks to USA's veto.

Time to abolish vetoes in the UN.

Also I thought they only possessed a veto in the security council - not all the other things. This bill would probably not go to the security council.
