the game will have drop-in/drop-out local/online multiplayer in GHTV. I don't think the FMV story mode will include multiplayer, but it's not made clear from the interviews (besides that basically anything they haven't confirmed in the game when asked about is confirmed to be out of the game)
The indication, by the way, is that you will not be able to select what songs you play in the GHTV mode. You select a "channel" and it picks songs automatically based on the channel, with some "light DVR" features allegedly on tap.
so that's what was happening while Rock Band was killing it, huh?
Guitar Hero was killing Rock Band by flooding the music game market with bundles of shit games bundled with instruments. Retailers got sick of selling any kind of bundle because of so many of the ___ Heroes bundles were gathering dust.

Plus the tracks in Guitar Hero, on the whole, just weren't as good. They were missing the secret sauce Harmonix put in their games.
Really curious if the new devs will be able to make good tracks. The few that bought DJ Hero liked it, but blending electronic tracks is a completely different beast than playing individual notes.
I trust that the new guys in charge can make a fun game (both DJ Hero games were a lot of fun to play), but pretty much everything presentation-wise about the reveal is poor to awful and the list of features that are off the table is significantly more depressing than anything Harmonix has confirmed to date.
I can't see Harmonix coming back to Wii. They've made it quite apparent in the past they don't like working with Nintendo. I'd be shocked to see them do anything else on a Nintendo platform.
Yeah, the WiiU would need to sell couple dozen million units overnight for Harmonix to even consider working with Nintendo again. They're a poor partner at best and there's just not enough potential sales there, regardless of any questions about the technical capabilities of their platform.
Eh, it was Harmonix that kind of fucked up Rock Band sales on the Wii by waiting far too long to release the first one (after belatedly realizing it was selling like crazy) and then releasing the next one just a few months later, resulting in massive fatigue in that part of the market.
But yeah, Wii U sales potential in general is crazy low. Kinda surprised Activision's giving it a shot after nearly every other company gave up. Then again I doubt it has a AAA budget, so Activision probably figured "what the hell, anything to annoy Harmonix."
I wouldn't doubt that part of activision's strategy with GHTV is they're removing having to run songs through a cert process and it's some sort of platform-neutral enviroment they can just put songs into and it "deploys" to all of the platforms.
You know the 360 and PS3 have been around for a goddamn long time when Guitar Hero showed up on them, blew up, died, and then rebooted with a completely new peripheral 5 years after the last game came out on the same hardware.

Doubt it. Reading some interviews here and there, it looks like it's been cooking for some time and it has gone thru a few iterations.
the whole FMV recording a fake band fake playing these songs with 200-400 extras thing doesn't sound particularly cheap to do, honestly
Given how absurd AAA development costs have gotten lately filming those 400 extras would probably be a lot cheaper than animating one ultra-HD pig warrior.

they filmed them dozens of times (both in "you suck" and "you rock" postures), so that they could digitally copypasta the footage out from 400 to 5000. for each song. no way that it's not expensive
So some people have pointed out that the audio mix changes a bit as the character moves around the stage. Which is actually an interesting attention to detail...
... until you realize that, especially at a gig the size of the one in the trailer, you'd be using monitors and would have a consistent mix coming in.
Also, I gave it a few views to try to get past a gut reaction, but... man, your band look like the knobiest bunch of knobs in the history of knobbiness.

Probably not as expensive as creating an entire character from scratch, texturing every single inch of it in extremely high detail, and creating dozens or hundreds of animations from scratch, making sure each one flows into the next smoothly. And then doing it again a couple dozen times.
Digital filming is dirt cheap. Digitally copypasting less so, but it's not that bad.
I've come to the realization that my current television set-up wouldn't allow for me to set up pro drums and still keep the couch where it is.
Clearly, what I need is to set up a second television (which I don't have) for my Xbox One (which I don't have) to play Rock Band 4 (which I don't have) on with my pro drum kit (which is in dire need of cymbal replacement) in another part of the house.
I literally hate this to a degree that is unsettling
I mean the FMV band thing is dumb and gives me flashbacks to terrible FMV in games from the days of yore but the crowd reaction thing is just
Like who looked at music games and said "...you know what this is missing? Dying on stage. I mean having a gig just utterly fall apart and the crowd reaction to that. And I'm not just talking audio of the crowd being disappointed or even animated polygons. No I'm saying lets film real live people looking crushed/disappointed and yeah even angry at the player's performance and put that in. it's gonna be great"
The biggest change, in that it breaks with all past guitar titles, is a new button layout for the guitar controller. The classic five rainbow-colored buttons are gone in lieu of a three-by-two vertical grid. It’s a small step toward actual guitar positioning (i.e. two strings and three frets). Accordingly, each fret now shares one of three on-screen lanes differentiated by black picks pointing up or white picks pointing down.
Picture this: if the lane of notes has a black pick followed by two white picks, your pointer finger would be on the top first fret, your middle finger would be on the lower second fret, and your ring finger would be on the lower third fret. Chord shapes!
It may sound complicated, but the end result is a more streamlined experience that requires relearning how to "read" Guitar Hero’s real-time sheet music. All of which is to say, like past Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles, the more challenging levels will be as much about reflexes as they are about pattern recognition and memorization.
Okay. Sure. I guess.
Why the fuck wouldn't I want to play Rocksmith instead?
I think pretty much everything about the new GH sounds pretty rad, and it sounds different enough from RB that I am confident that there will be room for both to offer completely different experiences
The whole GHTV deal sounds like a pretty amazing thing, if it works right
I think making the game back to guitar only is the right move.
A lot of those games alwys seemed to skew towards the "hardcore" score chasers, so keeping it guitar will appeal to those people again and separate it from Rockband.
My big thing with the new GH is the FMV, it just looks tacky and cheap to me. Maybe it's because I grew up with the crap FMV games in the 90's, but it feels like a step backwards. Everything does in many ways, even I the controller is new.
And if it's closer to mimicing chords and feeling like a guitar, why not just go and play rocksmith instead?
I just can't help but feel it's all outdated and cheap, which Is why I thought it was a F2p game earlier.
The reputation of Kinect FMV games doesn't do it any favors either.
That may be one of the main problems with the FMV sequences. Even if it's actually really expensive to make (and it sounds like it is), it looks cheap.

I'm just going to assume this is a F2P game. Looks like one.
I mean, I know they had to do a course correction after Pig Hero, but come on.
This is how Activision revealed Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock:

First impressions are everything, plus it turns out turning into a pig was pretty much the only distinctive thing about it.
yeah OK

And those new GH screens look like a fan made program to play MP3s or a new skin or something. What's the leading PC rhythm game that does that?
Plus the tracks in Guitar Hero, on the whole, just weren't as good. They were missing the secret sauce Harmonix put in their games.

I'll give the new GH a try but it sort of feels like it was made for mobile first and then was ported back to the consoles.
Also, this means Activision is making Wii U peripherals. That Harmonix can't use for RB if they ever decide to come back to Wii. lol

if you haven't already, it's probably a good idea to buy the RB1 export key

But honestly watching that video I don't think they could have found a way to make it any less appealing to me
It's like they reached deep inside of me and somehow found things I didn't even know I hated
That and abandoning licenses.
I was not being unfair

Although I could also see going guitar and allowing a karaoke sing-along as well...because it seems like a fairly easy add.
