I love all the metroids but super is definitely the strongest of all them. There's no hand holding, no data logs explaining what something is, and no nav pointer showing you where to go next.
That all lends itself to and strengthen what metroid is: navigating an unknown, hostile, and strange alien world all by yourself.
Also I hate shinespark puzzles. They're the only reason I haven't 100%'d a single 2d metroid.
they're a lot easier in super Metroid if you learn the short charge (which you should, it's real easy)
My laziness and stubbornness advise me to refuse your offer.
but there's only one time you even need it!
Wait... Which part?
there's a missile tank in Maridia you can only get with a vertical shinespark, and if you can't short charge it's a pain in the dick because you have to build a charge in the next room then run over and blah blah blah
with a short charge you just do the thing, it's easy
that's the only time in the game that you "need" it, everything else can be traversed either with a standard long charge vertical shinespark or other items entirely
Okay I've definitely gotten that one at some point. I guess I haven't hunkered down and gotten everything on one playthrough. All the other shinespark puzzles can die in a fire.
yeah I actually agree with you, the really elaborate shinespark sequences you have to do in fusion and zero mission really bug me, but there actually aren't any of those in super Metroid that you have to do in order to collect all the items
that one missile tank in Maridia is really the closest it has (assuming you aren't also trying to speedrun it)
Shorty on

that there's an in-game lore justification for it doesn't excuse the fact that the first half+ of the game ignores the series' core gameplay in a very annoying way

Its not just lore
They were trying to incorporate story elements with the gameplay.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
i have never done and will never do a shinespark in a metroid game
they feel really satisfying though
like along with the screw attack they're one of the main ways you're reminded that, goddamn, that powersuit can do some crazy shit

I LOVED super playing it for the first time a few years ago
I loaded up Fusion and it told me where to go to find missiles and I turned the game off
Which is monstrously unfair of me but it was just immediately apparent that it wasn't gonna be quite what I loved about super
It took me many years to appreciate why Fusion was good.
Of particular note: the player and Samus at least form a united front of "FUCK this bullshit!"
My favorite thing about Fusion is easily SA-X, who holds a pretty high space in my list of best "NOPE" bosses in video games.
They straight-up give you a chance to ambush her, early on, for the sole purpose of letting you know that you don't have a god damn chance in hell of beating her, so you need to stay the fuck out of her way.
I felt like people sold me on SA-X being a terrifying thing stalking after you but all of its appearances are completely scripted and I was a bit disappointed.
The secret way you could kill that one boss using the grapple beam in Super Metroid blew my mind back in 94 or whenever that game came out.
this is literally the only Cool Metroid Thing that I discovered completely on my own
I had the grapple beam and I used it on everything because I thought it was the coolest thing ever invented and I looked at Draygon and those sparky things on the walls and was like, "hah, that's just dumb enough to work!"
It's weird to me how many basically last-minute changes there have been. It's two weeks away, how are these not locked down?
Who knows if it's actually changing, though!
They might just be doing an ungodly slow rollout on dates
Snipperclips is supposed to be out in March
March is 5 days away
When in March?
Don't know!
I was thinking more of the stuff that dropped, I guess. I could see Yacht Club shooting for launch but not being sure they could make it and hedging their beds with a vague date.
They detailed the day-1 update, and it's to add/activate all the online features, so unless they're sneaking that fix in there, the Joycons might just be bad?

There's no reason it can't also contain firmware fixes.
Nintendo will be having a Direct specifically to showcase indie games on Tuesday at noon eastern
I hope they keep up this push for Indie support. From the reports of how easy the Switch is to develop for, I'm really excited at the prospect of the Switch being the big Indie Console.
Imagine: Super Shovel Knight, published by Nintendo!
I understand the impetus to defend a console you want but it is not making a false narrative that the console is launching with a dearth of exciting games.
That's subjective, and if what you're looking for is first party nintendo games, they're not there.
Like, Shovel Knight? I own that, I played that two years ago. I don't care. BotW? I have a Wii U and would rather just buy that. I don't want a re-release of Mario Kart that I already own or a re-release of Smash that I already own.
Splatoon 2 is interesting but I have Splatoon and it didn't have legs for me. That leaves Mario, at Christmas.
Other people may be excited for what is coming out, but based on the coverage I've seen, I'm really really not. I would classify that console as a piece of hardware with very little content. Nintendo separates themselves in the market as the only place to play nintendo games. That's what I'm looking for.

And you can just wander in Metroid Prime instead of having the doors lock behind you every time.
Fusion's good, but it's way handholdier than Prime, even with the hints on.
Why I fear the ocean.
They don't really bother me on replays either.
in metroid prime's defense you can (and I do) turn off the hint system even before you start the game, fusion can't because it's part of the narrative
But i love how it uses that to make it feel like stuff is constantly falling apart and going off the rails, it's so goooooooooood

You must not have played Super Metroid.
c'mon man, you want to be a cool bounty hunter right
jus ta bit of shine spark and you'll be cool
It's absolutely my favourite part of any Metroid game.

but Fast RMX and Shovel Knight + Specter of Torment will be
VC is never available at launch though. E shop is probably a higher priority
Not complaining though, hell yes I will get Shovel Knight day 1

Zag on em
I'm hoping that patch fixes it but even so these seem like pretty major firmware bugs to make it to production.
There's no reason it can't also contain firmware fixes.
