You don't like Dune? The set design and general stylistics in that movie were fucking amazing.

Also, Wild at Heart had some greatly evocative scenes.

And Twin Peaks was pure awesomeness for the first season until you figured out he was just making it up as he went along. And even then, the stylistics and mood were gorgeous.
He has style. Style alone doesn't impress me.

Also Dune was trash, especially since I read the book.

Style is pretty much what a director does. I mean - Lynch has a lot more creative control than a lot of directors and ends up playing producer and writer, for which he could be faulted, I guess. But in his directoral role, he's really good.

Oh shit I misspoke -- I meant style alone doesn't impress me. It's easy to have style, it's hard to make great movies.

Did the imdb.com search, haven't seen it. I like Blue Velvet by David Lynch, and only Blue Velvet. The rest of his stuff I sort of think is trash.
Give it a shot. It's not stereotypical of Lynch at all. I suspect he didn't have a whole lot of creative input on it. But the people that did, man. They knew what they were doing. My lasting impression is that there isn't a wasted shot in the whole thing, which is quite the accomplishment. The story might not be up your alley, but what the hell do I know? Give it a try. At worst you can say you thought it sucked and yell at me for recommending shitty movies.
I'll put it on my list. I'm at that point where I like watching Lynch if only to know where his talent all went wrong. Blue Velvet is a masterpiece, emphatically film 1A to Wall Street for the best film of the 1980s (this is not a scientific list at all).
You might also try The Straight Story at some point. It's the closest he's been to normal in years. Not a great movie (and certainly a slow-paced one), but it's got some nice heart in it while still retaining that weird Lynchiness. I was on a bit of a roll for his films at one point and it blew my mind to come across a movie that had no lesbians.

I was underwhelmed by Silver City, but I guess a lot of that had to do with Bush being such a big overt asshole who was taking direct shots from everywhere that making a movie with snark pointed at him just seemed... petty, I guess. Also, Sayles is such a great dramatic director and Cooper is such a great lead that a lighthearted-ish film felt kind of like frippery.

I used to watch that a lot when I worked in the video stores, because it's rated G. I didn't catch that much that caught my interest, I'd be surprised if I really liked it. It was even Disney film, wasn't it? Or was it only G rated? I can't remember.

I sort of hated him a lot but then I read an essay by David Foster Wallace about him which illuminated some of his talents. I'm still not certain if I really agree though.

Not actually true. At least not the first part. The internet has taught me there is someone for everyone.

.....I tried to find that picture of the short skinny guy and the huge tall fat girl as proof, and instead had to sit through pages of fruitless GIS induced fat girl porn. damnit.
