Tips on becoming a better player
Spoiler:
Forwards:
Spoiler:
1. If a defenseman pinches from the point, cover his ass. If you don't, you have no reason to bitch at him other than he shouldn't have pinched because you are not responsible enough to cover your teammate.
2. Backcheck. You can be as lazy as you want in real life, but all it takes to backcheck is pushing down on the left thumbstick.
3. You are not Superman. You can't take on four players at once. Pass the fucking puck.
4. Pass the puck to the point. You are going to get your ass plastered to the wall going in alone. Before you get plastered, pass the fucking puck. And when you do pass the puck to the point, don't pass it when they are directly behind you with an opposing player right there. You are setting them up for failure.
Defensemen:
Spoiler:
1. If you pinch in from the point, make sure you know what the hell you are doing. Remember, you don't have to shoot from the sideboards. Take that shit around the net and make a pass. Beware though, if you pass from directly behind the net and the pass is to no one, the opposing team will go on the break.
2. Cover your partner. If you see a man closing in on them, be open on the other side of the ice to take a pass.
3. Cover your ass. If you are going into the corner to retrieve the puck and are about to get smashed to hell and back, hit the pass button as you make contact with the puck so that you get it out of harms way. Take the hit like a man.
Powerplay:
Spoiler:
1. Yet again, pass to the point. Don't go in like He-Man and think you are so great. Set-up the damn powerplay and use the points. If you have ever watched a game in the NHL you would know that the pointmen are the ones who control the play.
Penaltykill:
Spoiler:
1. Don't get pissed if you aren't passed to so that you can go on the attack. It is a penaltyKILL for a reason. Kill as much time off the clock as you can. Pass back to the last man (if he is all alone). Take your time going around the net. Sit there if they are not attacking. When they do attack, get away from them and flip the puck (hold RB + up on right thumbstick) out of the zone.
2. You all know what a box looks like. Make one of those while killing penalties. Don't run around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Troubleshooting:
Spoiler:
If you and your opponent can't get a game started (freezes at loading screen, can't accept invite, boots you at start of game), try these:
1. Clear your cache ("How to" link)
2. Install the game to your HD.
3. Delete rosters and re-download them.
4. Keep starting a game with your opponent until it works. (This has worked for me plenty of times and others that eventually kept trying got it to work)
5. Unplug your router and connect directly to your modem.

I'll probably be on tonight. Message me on Xbox whether I am on or not if you want to play me this evening.
EDIT:
remlap, I don't remember, do I have to play you again? If so, will you be on tonight?
I'm pretty sure I have one more against you. And no I won't be on tonight. Tomorrow night though I will be on. I have to work until 8pm Mountain Time but after that I'll be good to go. And then I'll be on again possibly sometime Sunday, and FOR SURE Monday night.
Alright. I'll be on either playing Rockband or NHL with my friends (including Redfield) so just send me a message tomorrow when you sign on. If I don't get back to you right away just wait, it means I will be in the middle of something
Sounds good to me. Once I get on I'll be staying on for probably about 4 hours anyways so I'll drop you a line and we'll finish up the series. I can't remember, did you take the first game or did I?

I honestly don't know. I am excited for a good battle though!

It should be an ultra-supreme battle. See you tomorrow night.
You'll have to wait until season 2 is finished then Reddy will make a season 3 then you can join that. So for now I suggest practiced like a fucker in hopes you'll be able to score in the league unlike about half or so of us.

I used to be aces at NHL 08. I'm still feeling pretty good at NHL 09. I know that playing online is the great ego-crusher though.

I'd be honored to kick your ass in your league Schide, but I'm in way too many the way it is...and I run all but one of them, so that's an extra side dish of work.

I'm sure there are lots of custom teams out there, but does anyone have custom made OHL teams? Or the stats for players from the past? Maurice Richard, Bobby Orr, etc.? At the very least, does anyone know of a website that shows how to make them/what stats are used? (And if for some reason my question doesn't make any sense, I only have NHL 06. )
And because it probably got missed on the bottom of the last page...
Well, it all starts with our NHL09 team, the Hotsteppers. The name Hotsteppers came from the PA comic that is in the OP (well, the one in the OP is edited by me, but it is basically the same).
I went to New York Comic-Con and since I have a sketch book for these things I brought it with. Brought me the photoshop of Tycho in front of the Stanley Cup and a clipping of Gabe with the cowboy hat and asked Mr. Real Life Gabe to give me sketches of Gabe in a cowboy hat and Tycho in front of the Cup. He asked me why that request and I told him that we had a hockey team on the forums and named them the Hotsteppers. Him and Tycho said that was cool (although I forget if I mentioned NHL09 in there, so they might think we have a real hockey team).
Either way it was awesome. I got to walk right up to them when the Con opened on that Saturday and there was no one there. I also have video from their panel on helping kids to draw (which was funnily filled with more older folks than little ones). I plan to put that video on my YouTube sometime in the near future. It was quite funny.

Splain? The home team got a shut out each time and the goals weren't any cheap dink ins. I understand that shut outs happen far too often, but on this occasion they were well warrented
Maybe it has something to do with playing styles? I dunno...I felt like I got enough chances to at least get a goal or two but it didn't pan out. They were well played games by Rykosho (sp?), but I would've liked to break through at least once!
Them's the breaks.
And yeah shutouts seem a little high. I had a streak of 6 or 7 in a row going before someone (I think WilD) scored on me tonight.
Has there been any indication on when the new patch for the 360 version of this is going to be released?
As far as I know it is being tested by Microsoft. Their normal time is 10 days. So I wouldn't bank on this upcoming Tuesday, but probably the following one?
Regardless of the math, the amount of shutouts isn't low in my opinion. I guess that if you know how to score and you're up against anyone except the cream of the crop defensively on a good day, you don't have issues. I'm ranked near 6,000 now online and so I play a lot of games against top-ranked teams. Generally, our games are in the range of 2-1, 3-2, 4-2, etc.
If you learn how to score, very rarely will you be shut out for the entire game.
Furthermore, I'm glad they don't let people who have played 10 games score consistently. It only makes sense to require some experience to learn the game. I couldn't put Halo 3 in my system and start to beat guys like Cody, Jake, etc. It would take me hundreds of games...and I would still probably lose.
Just sayin...

Why? Games are 15 minutes long. How many goals are scored in the real NHL in 15 minutes?

The amount of shutouts in this league is just unrealistic. I don't care how long games are, there are just too many shutouts.
Really? I won 7-0.

And yeah shutouts seem a little high. I had a streak of 6 or 7 in a row going before someone (I think WilD) scored on me tonight.
You should if you want it to be realistic.
Approximate average total goals scored in an NHL game: 6.21. In 60 minutes, that is an average of 1 goal every 9.66 minutes.
Apply that to 15 minutes of hockey and you get 1.55 goals per game.
Sounds like a lot of shutouts is actually VERY realistic...proportionally.

Math, killing the hopes of the world's youth since 0001
As far as I know it is being tested by Microsoft. Their normal time is 10 days. So I wouldn't bank on this upcoming Tuesday, but probably the following one?
If you learn how to score, very rarely will you be shut out for the entire game.
Furthermore, I'm glad they don't let people who have played 10 games score consistently. It only makes sense to require some experience to learn the game. I couldn't put Halo 3 in my system and start to beat guys like Cody, Jake, etc. It would take me hundreds of games...and I would still probably lose.
Just sayin...
