So, the Avs played much better than I had anticipated. They looked lost the first period and were absolutely dominated, but still managed to keep it tied. But they really picked it up in the second. They were intercepting in the neutral zone, making good passes and kept the puck moving, unlike their previous strategy of (failed) dump and chase.
Anderson made a habit of coming waaaaay out of position to make saves, and would have been scored on if it weren't for a few lucky bounces, but during the 5 on 3 he was spectacular.
And Duchene, hot damn he was hungry to score a goal.
Also, Koci is great. I enjoyed watching him play for the Blackhawks a few years back, and I'm glad we got him. I think I was the only one cheering for him at the beginning when they announced his name because nobody really knew who he was. But I did.
Bruins looked so disoraganized last night. It was not a good night. Washington's a good team but god damn, 4-1? I'm not too worried because it's the first game but man, they looked awful.

I actually thought they looked better than Washington 5-on-5 for the first half of the game. They cycled the puck better, and had a lot of offensive pressure. Once it was 2-0, they gave up, which is concerning. The first two goals were caused by mental errors, which normally isn't a problem for Boston.
Goal 1 - PP goal. PP was caused by a very dumb play by (I think) Ryder who panicked and threw the puck cross-ice to the boards by the bench during a line change. Too many men.
Goal 2 - ES goal. During a line change, there was miscommunication on the defensive structure. A fresh-off-the-bench Bergeron couldn't catch up to an already streaking Ovechkin, and no one in the defensive zone decided to take him. #8 waltzed right in for the score.
After that, the team got down on itself, and they started pressing. They just need to trust the system and not try to do too much defensively. The more they tried to be aggressive, the more out of position they were.
Good things:
1. Both Sturm and Krecji look to be about 85%-90% healthy and capable.
2. Bergeron was probably the best player on the ice. Solid defense, good work in the corners, and he scored the team's only goal.
3. 5-on-5 play for the first half of the game.
Bad things:
1. Lack of execution on the simple things like line changes.
2. Lucic's skating. He was falling more than skating, and could never line up one of his trademark hits.
3. The 1st PP unit. No chemistry whatsoever.
4. Ference. Dude is toast. His skating isn't quite what it was, he's still not very physical, and he was taking bad angles to the puck all night long.
5. Thomas. You gotta make a big save in a game like that.
Hopefully they can shake off the bad start tomorrow. I wonder if we'll see Rask for the first time this season?
One powerplay, one goal for Malkin. Kinda disappointed that it was Goligoski instead of Letang making the feed, since it was the 1st pp line and letang is on my fantasy team, but it still looked about 75% better than any powerplay I saw last year. And it was against the Rangers, best PK of last year iirc.
Ahh, regular season Red Wing hockey, I missed you. Build a two goal lead, immediately blow it because of lazy defense and poor rebound control.
You sure you're watching the right game and didn't turn on the Leafs by accident?
Can't wait to watch us get murdered by Washington tonight.
While Toskala looked decent in the pre-season, I really hope the monster makes his debut tonight.
Yea, we're going to get floored.
I'm not sure about Toskala. On the one hand, he let in 4 goals and lost (but in his defense, 3/4 of those were our 'defence' failing him, diaf Beaucheman), making it possible that they'll try out The Wall. But then, he also was barely tested early in the game because our offence and forechecking were actually doing something.
I suppose I'll get more worried if he keeps staying inconsistent.

Oh what the hell Toscala? It was a 1-on-1 with the defenceman, from the top of the circle, you were out of your net and you still let the damn puck in at 1:17 of the 1st.
I think Toronto needs a goalie ready to stop about 10 1 on 0 breakaways a game.
I'll settle for a defence that prevents 10 1 on 0 breakaways a game.
Haha, the Caps guy during the intermission interview:
"Wow, like, I haven't seen this many breakaways in a game before. I mean...obviously our transition game is absolutely fantastic right now, but...like..."

I don't understand the Leafs. For years now, they just act clumsy. Compared to other teams, they can't stickhandle to save their lives, can barely pass on a good day, have trouble getting anywhere and consistently have to backtrack.
And they never seem to bother address this fundamental problem. I see countless other teams easily dance around them.

Hey, hey. It wasn't technically a loss: we got one point out of it. So now we're only halfway behind, which isn't insurmountable!
Phew that was close.

Hopefully my fantasy team can hold his dead weight for a while.
Also, we should get a title change for this thread someday.
Shots 7-2 currently.
Go Pens!
I get NHL HD.
I don't seem to remember having this channel last season.

It's easy to forget just how freaking fast he is.
Also...Heatley feeds Thornton? I think they have it backwards. :P
Oh well.
Fuck the Ducks.
Please tell? Apparently the team websites no longer show highlight reels and it's pissing me off.
