What do you mean it looks nothing like Morgan Freeman? It has the freckles and everything! Maybe you don't think it's that great of a depiction but damn it looks something like him, surely!

for some reason I thought that James Cameron was making this movie
For what it's worth (less than nothing), I really enjoyed the handful of Avatar episodes I saw before we lost our free cable. T_T There was a predominantly Asian feel to it, but I thought the characters came from a variety of races and cultures.

man, you people and your racism. i thought it was obvious the cast was intentionally ambiguous in it's ethnic background. it's a fantasy world, not necessarily earth. i think this gave them all the license they needed to cast whatever range of ethnicity they wanted to. roundeyes all upins.
The Village was such a kick in the balls. It was pretty creepy originally! Then it was 'GUESS WHAT THE REAL MONSTER WAS THE RETARDED KID. OH AND IT'S MODERN TIMES'.

Avatar is a great show, everyone should watch it. Picturing Morgan Freeman as Appa, whether he was in a fluffy bison suit, just doing the "voice", or just flying around is funny no matter what.

I'm pretty sure there was a book that came out several years before the movie which did a much better job of that whole modern times idea. Damned if I can remember what it was called though. (not the Giver)

I remember this book! It was the one where the entire village is like a zoo exhibit or something, and they're letting people get sick and die because that's how it was and then the girl has to leave to find medicine and she has to be sneaky about it

I'll be honest. I really liked Avatar and all, but Aang was never the reason to watch it. I swear, every main villian they came up with(even whiny Zuko!) outclassed the hero characters. I really only liked the heroes as a catalyst for awesome fights. I don't care too much about Aang's casting. If M night shamwow starts messing with my villians, then I'll be suffeciently nerd raging.

Yeah, you guys should at least check out Avatar
It's pretty funny and self-conscience and not at all like Naruto or One-Piece or shitty anime #534
Meanwhile I have no problem with Aang being white but Sokka and Katara?
If they're white, Morgan Freeman is a flying bison
It really does seem like the movie obeys the strict law that Hollywood heroes must be white

It's fishy when that range means that all the heroes are white and all the villains brown.
So not having an obvious epicanthic fold automatically means white? So white is somehow a default race even when they are a minority on this planet?
Sure the fantasy world based on Asia, where the writing is Chinese, the main character's whois a bald orange wearing monk whose guardian's name is the same as the Dalai Lama's is obviously up to interpretation.
I'm sure a lot the same ones crying big deal would've had an uproar if they cast non whites in the Lord of the Rings when it was also fantasy.

I just don't understand this thinking that is still firmly in place in mainstream American movies. If the lead isn't white, people won't go see the movie
This has been disproven over and over again yet the belief holds firm
The fucking President of our country isn't white anymore and movies still have to be white

It's basically The Ruins, except an entire country in affected.
Eh, I couldn't hate it, even though it was trying its best to make me.
