So I completed ME2, great fucking game. I have one question though, End Spoilers
It seems Mordin, the Salarian died.......why did he die? Did I miss an upgrade? He was Loyal, everyone was loyal.
YOU DIDN'T LOVE HIM ENOUGH!
He's the easiest to lose. You can stop him from dying by having him with you during the final fight, however. Also, did you happen to talk to him all the way until he brought up his nephew? Those conversations might help.

Mordin seems to die randomly for people. Like, they will choose him for nothing and he will still die for no reason. What were your choices in the Collector Base? Did you upgrade his omni-tool? Did you talk to him up to and including the discussion of his nephew? I don't know if the last two are relevant but with Mordin, who the fuck knows?
Nah there's a couple talking in a shop on the Citadel
They are talking about getting something health-related for their son, and at one point say something like "Maybe we should just ask a stranger on the street."
It's funny I damn sure no my first time through I missed this, but replaying I found it.
And man they really didn't have many unique enviros in the first game. Which I remember writing off with "Yeah early space colonization wouldn't have a lot non prefab construction" but christ it gets super repetitious when you are doing every mission you can.
Also I didn't run across the crazy escaped slave girl on this run through.
The bases on unexplored worlds. Gah. They could have done a couple more building types.
And some different space missions, holy crap there is only one freighter/private ship in the god damn galaxy.
Yeah but the sections of transparent floor on those were pretty awesome.

You probably assigned him to a task that someone else could have done better
5 bucks says he assigned ihm as tech.
Mordin has a tendency to die no matter what you do.
I picked all the right choices my first run, and still lost him at the very end.
For those who had Mordin die, did you research his upgraded omni tool? No idea if it makes a difference, just trying to figure out what decisions can affect his survival in the endgame.

I did his loyalty mission and bought his upgrade. Never talked to him at all. He survived, but I never assigned him to anything.
I lost Tali when I assigned her to the shaft, but I didn't do her loyalty mission properly. Lost Zaeed when I assigned him to lead squad 2. Don't know why he died, maybe someone else would have been a better choice, since he was loyal.

Christ Pancake, what is your resolution setting? LOLxWTF?
Also, great pics. Reminds me I should have turned off that film grain crap in the first game. Seems to be toned done much more in the second.
All UE3 games support a feature called "tiledshot." It makes huge images like so:
It freezes the game and multiplies the current image's resolution by the multiplier you set. It then spends a while grabbing your resolution sized snippets of the greater image. If you, say, play with a resolution of 1920x1080 and take a tiledshot with a multiplier of 8, it will produce an image that is 15840x8640 by taking smaller 1920x1080 images of the whole thing and combining them into a larger image.
Lost Zaeed when I assigned him to lead squad 2. Don't know why he died, maybe someone else would have been a better choice, since he was loyal.
Zaeed doesn't strike me as much of a team player. He's mostly a lone wolf mercing it up, right? So it probably wasn't a good idea making him a squad leader.

Probably not.
I couldn't think of anyone else to do it, though. Garrus and Miranda were in my squad, and I kept Jacob back and used him to escort the survivors. I'm betting he is probably the best choice for squad 2 leader.

It really should be reiterated just how often Zaeed's stories end with "everybody but me died"
It does not bode terribly well for his leadership skills

Ever listen to Zaeed's stories? How he is usually the only guy to make it out alive? And how his former partner-in-crime and his gang completely sold him out? Zaeed is nothing but a selfish old fuck who doesn't care if anyone dies, so long as he gets out alive.

Garrus, Miranda, and Jacob, are, I believe, your options for team leaders. Garrus and Miranda definitely.

Yeah, surprisingly you have to bear in mind people's skillsets and strengths when assigning them to specific roles. You want people with experience of commanding like Miranda or Garrus. For the swarm, you want extra powerful biotics like Jack or Samara. The initial pipeline, good Tech's like Legion or Tali.

what happens if (endgame)
the person in the vents dies? Who opens the doors?
Tali might be an option, since she's apparently been running her own little quarian special ops group. Then again, her record doesn't look much better than Zaeed's.

Well, my (bad) logic was more along the lines of "he does have experience!". And Garrus and Miranda were in my personal squad, didn't want to risk losing them. Only Zaeed died, though, the rest of his squad made it. I'm assuming Tali was the right person for the shaft, but I had a feeling she'd die, given that she was the only team member who's loyalty mission I fucked up on.

Why thank you, pancake! That is awfully useful information. Will definitely be making some new desktop wallpapers soon. Might result in a biotic charge suicide or two, but it'll be worth it :P
I had all my people live, made Garrus the group leader since he has experiance leading a fire team, sent Tali down the shaft, made Sumara be my biotic, and sent Thane as escort. For my final part, I have Miranda and Garrus.
Also, I loved Zaeed, he's like Shepard, but takes checks.

Technically, yes, but since ME2 has that vignette effect, it looks pretty bad. It tiles that too, so you'll come up with an image filled with dark boxes.
ME1 had the same thing, but it was fairly easily turned off with no discernible drop in visual quality. The last I saw, no one knew how to get rid of it in ME2 without completely disabling post-processing, which makes the game look... not good.

Yeah.
I didn't assign Mordin to anything. I had Tali do the vent walk. And I had Garrus lead the other team as well as do teh defense. I brought Grunt and Miranda with me for the final battle.
I researched his Omni Tool, but never heard about his nephew.
Grunt and Jack. I don't really care about Jack, but I liked Grunt. I assigned him to the second team and he didn't make it. I figured if anyone was able to cause a distraction it was gonna be a huge krogan tearing through crowds of collectors. Sadly, I was wrong. I still don't know why Jack died.

the escort for the crew. I mean you basically need a guy who'll make a path of dead collectors through. A guy who will make everyone in the way think "holy shit run!!".
I was not expecting the game to be that thorough when it came to the choices at the end.
Like I know it hints at it, but I was expecting a simple loyalty check or something. Considering how organic a squadmate's personality is (i.e. the correct choice isn't the member that is a Knight or Black Mage), I didn't think it would be taking that into account.
Needless to say I was impressed that it did, though I lost a couple of people because I wasn't planning on it doing so.
