I found the best way to get Recon unlocks for people who suck at Recon (like me).
Step One: Spawn as a Recon, any loadout.
Step Two: Find a Medic with the M60.
Step Three: Put yourself in that Medic's squad.
Step Four: Play creepy stalker with your new friend. Wait for him to die in a terrible bullet and/or explosion related accident.
Step Five: Pick up his kit.
Step Six: Rack up crazy points as a "Medic" with a M60 in a ghillie suit.
Step Seven (Optional): Celebratory dance.
I managed to gain three Recon unlocks in one round earlier with this method. I was tempted to do this with Engineer as well but it appears that my Engy-Fu is slowly improving.

It makes me cringe to see people who do this... If you're recon, make headshots! Use that thing they call a sniper rifle.
I suck terribly with the sniper rifles. I'm lucky if I hit the side of sniper hill, much less an enemy Recon on top of it :P . Although on some maps I can do much better, I can't snipe a damn thing on Port Valdez. Which I unfortunately run into all the time.

How do the sniper rifles perform?
One thing that pissed me off to no end in previous BF titles was that only headshots would make an instant kill. In BF1942 you had to hit them in the chest like three times for a sniper kill.

It's headshots only again for instant kills. Two shots any other place.
You could always roll a Saiga Recon. With motion sensors you can clear out priority buildings relatively quickly and efficiently.

Port Valdez is not a good map to snipe on, so i can understand that.

This is only with the bolt action weapons.
With magnum ammo you'll nearly kill any person not wearing body armor with a body shot, with body armor welp
And the Semi-Auto snipers take three or four shots to the body.

Good luck killing people when the M24 sniper will plunk you in the chest and kill you while you frantically shoot at his head

Would you care to explain again? I don't understand the first and second paragraph, they contradict my heads and I'm a bit interested in going recon, C4 seems fun.
Lot's of stuff in this game are like deciphering scrambled Greek to me, slowly learning though.

If you go assault with something that isn't an AR (or can't take the 40mm attachement) you get c4 isntead (for example, if you take the saiga).

Also if headshot damage is only twice the amount of actual damage, none of the silenced guns will one-shot kill someone in the head in non-hardcore
That chart isn't really informative for a n00b like me. Numbers are nice and pretty but when I have no idea about distances, how much HP you start with and the effects of armor it isn't much help looking at them.
I was just confused but I'll interpret what you wrote like this.
Bolt action sniper rifles: 2 Body shots
Bolt action sniper rifles + Magnum ammo: 1-2 Body shots
Semi-auto sniper rifles: loads of shots
All of them: Insta-kill on head shots.
Am I on the right track?
[edit] Ah, head shots do double damage, no insta-kill mechanic in place then? I understand

Nah the semi autos take more than one to the head, I think.
I think it's twice the weapon damage for headshots. Body armor doesn't affect this. If that's the case, non of the semi-autos are one-hit kills to the head.
Which makes sense, really.
The HP is assumed to start off with is "100" in graphs like those

According to the chart the M24 or M95 looks like the best rifles. The M24 being much faster would probably win.

The M24 is better than the M95
But the M95 has a much more satisfying sound
And the GOL has piss perfect accuracy so there's that too
Just use whatever gun you want and you'll kill mans
If you're a good shot, the SV98 is the winner. It's slightly faster than the M24 with the bolt cycle. Also, it has 10 rounds in a clip
By "good shot" i mean a guaranteed headshot man ^^

I am a good first shot. Making second shots are not something I do well at, this is why I am a good sniper in Day of Defeat but not very good at all in other games.
the AN-94 is the best rifle. Some people say it is the m16, but it seems to me that the M16 is exactly like the AN, except weaker. Supposedly it is more accurate but I think both guns are extremely accurate and can't tell the difference apart in that department
I'm a horrid sniper. I'm cool with it though. I feel CG'ing and 4xSMG folks makes up for it though. I really dig all the urban sections of the game, I wish they release some map-making stuff or at least a dense city map.
We, the PC master race, don't have to deal with this DLC bullshit do we
Absolutely, I'd imagine we can purchase it through steam or the EA store (since I don't see an in game store like in Dragon Age). Then enter the code in game, like the limited edition stuff.

Port Valdez is not a good map to snipe on, so i can understand that.
It's pretty much battlefield 2 but with better physics and destructible terrain and no planes.
and more bloom
I don't like the bloom, but everything else is pretty much spot on if you are a fan of the Battlefield series

But who gives a shit you'll still kill anyone with any of the assault guns

I can't recall it's name.
Anyway, is it just me, or are the auxiliary weapons like the G3, you know the ones that all classes can equip, are crap?
Besides the shotguns and the M1A1, I've had little to no success with the others.
I really want to level up some stuff and hear some explosions.

And by purchase I mean get for free, this time.
Was map pack 1 the two "extra" maps the game shipped with?

I mean what do you do if you didn't buy the map and the server switched to it, would the server just kick you?
