Game modes!
Single-player
There is single player! In a battlefield game! Weird, I know!

Squad Rush: 4v4
Each team has an M-COMM station. Kind of like CTF but the flags don't move.

Squad Death-Match: 4v4v4v4
Played on a smaller map, this is just a straight up team-dm with a single vehicle dropped in the centre to fight over. Get your mates, grab your guns and start shooting.

Conquest: 16v16 PC, 12v12 PS3/360
A Battlefield mainstay, this mode makes its return here. No major changes announced, and there've been hints at classic maps making reappearances as DLC.

Rush: 16v16 PC, 12v12 PS3/360
Players choose to join either the Attacking team or the Defending team, and spawn in their respective bases. Attackers try to set up demolition charges on a set of 2 M-COMM crates in the Defending team's base. For each Attacker killed, the team loses one life, or "ticket." If the Attacking team's tickets run out, game over. If they manage to detonate the M-COMM's, a new Defending team base opens up, and the process repeats itself until three bases have been destroyed and the Attackers win.

Kits! (Loadouts!)
Assault
The basic offensive loadout. Main features are an ammo box that replenishes ammo when dropped, and a 40mm launcher that can be used for grenades, smoke grenades, or a slow-reloading shotgun attachment. Assault Rifles are the Assault's main primary weapon. Against vehicles, the Assault will generally not fare so well.

Medic
Similar to the Assault's ammo box, the medic gets a first aid kit. Once dropped, it will replenish health to everyone within a fairly tight radius. The medic also gets defib paddles, which can resurrect recently deceased teammates. These teammates, still caught in the limbo of the spawn timer, will be marked on your minimap (and on screen if HUD is enabled) by a little green or blue heart-rate monitor symbol. The medic's primary is the Light Machine Gun, making him great for infantry support. Against vehicles, though, he is worse off than the Assault.

Engineer
The engineer's specials are a welding tool that repairs friendly vehicles (and deals damage to enemies!), and the choice between RPG's or anti-tank mines. RPG's have the added benefit of being able to lock onto anything that has already been marked by the cross-kit unlock tracer dart pistol, while anti-tank mines will not harm friendly vehicles and stay deployed even after you die or switch kits. Engineer's primaries are Sub Machine Guns, generally pretty weak but also silenced and fairly accurate.

Recon
The recon's specials are a choice between remote-detonated C4 and the ability to call down a mortar strike on a target with which you have line-of-sight. They also gets the incredibly useful motion sensor thing, which spots all enemies within a decent radius for a limited time. The recon's primaries are sniper rifles. Also it can't be overstated how much proper hiding will help you in this: people will walk within 2 feet of you if you're in the right bush, the ghillie suit is your friend.

Headshots with the revolver are most satisfying.

I had just fired the last round in my M24 and didn't have time to reload, so I whipped out the revolver. I knew a guy was nearby, so I rounded the hill, glimpsed him, and fired off a shot.

A metallic "PLONK" as his helmet gets a new ventilation hole, extra points for a headshot. :^:

I wonder if you can get marksman points with other weapons. I zeroed in a headshot with a sniper rifle from ~100 meters, switched to revolver, went iron sight and got a headshot with it.

I really really enjoy this game when two squads are evenly matched. Squad Rush is the BEST game mode ever when you get a good match going.

Normal Rush is awesome for pubs. I just wish it would stabilize so I can rent a server!

I hope they do something about entering a game 3 on 5 or 4 on 7. Only additional people entering were on the other team. Sure isn't fun...

I think the problem is that people join up with squads from friends lists (at least on xbox live) and that can unbalance the teams? I dunno I normally never check the scoreboard until the end.

Yeah, none of the higher clip, faster firing pistols have big enough advantages over the 1911 to compensate for its higher damage.

But similar things can be said of a number of weapons, like the XM8 (for the first while of an Assault career), M60, or Saiga.

Mmmm, new thread smell. Now to foul it with stuff from the old thread:
Actually, there's a brief period of invulnerability when you're revived. I think it may, or may not give you a second or two of this where you can indeed shoot at enemies.
This is not the case; the invulnerability lasts until you move, shoot or bring up your ironsights. Invulnerability is still probably not a good way to go about this, but the main problem I see with not having any is the annoyance of being suddenly brought back into the game and suddenly taken out of it again. Forcing the medic to stay by someone's side for a few seconds while using the defibs (like calling in a mortar strike, for instance) doesn't sound so good either.

I think an interesting way to deal with it would be to have a 3-second or so animation of the dead player getting up, during which they can still be killed (to discourage firefight defibs). This would allow the player getting res'd to stay in his spawn select menu until the animation had finished and he had full control.

Has anyone any experience with the server software? I'm wondering how long it'll be before you can tweak the number of tickets each side is given (or one side, in Rush), as well as the player cap.

I seem to remember that Battlefield 2 had 64 player servers, even though the maps were advertised at 32. Am I dumb?

Edit: Also, for all you OP medics: While I appreciate you and your paddles, please don't use them when there's 5 bad dudes standing there waiting to kill me again.

At least in the case of the M60, the issue is that it inexplicably does like twice the damage of other LMGs, and also has great accuracy. The MG36 and XM8 LMG are both very solid weapons. The MG3 kinda sucks. But the issue with the M60 is that it's so over-the-top broken that nothing else is ever worth using.
heh, lately as an Assault I've been dueling -dug in- Recon's and their x12 scopes with my x4 scope on my Abakan. Good times.

    Hell no.

I'm so sick of these 1337 5nip4h assholes in every game.

The game is, at least loosely, modeled on real life. In real life, snipers are powerful and rare; yeah, they make one-shot kills and all, but they spend days skulking through bushes to make them, and if someone finds out where they are, they're fucked.

The translation to video games has only served to indulge every teenager's spec ops fantasies. That's fine in a single player game, but in multiplayer, it really serves to bog down matches. And this shit repeats itself across game after game after game. It's fucking tiresome. If real-world snipers were even remotely as common as they are in these games, we'd have better tools for finding and killing the bush-humping bastards. And then the real world would be modeled into the game - again, loosely - and we'd have sniper-seeking rockets or at least built-in thermal sights or something.

The balance of power is always too far in favor of snipers in terms of risk vs. reward. If someone can kill one while the pussy sits there, out of cover and under fire, good riddance. Snipers ought to suffer terrible, awful deaths if they give away their positions.

    Beat the Single Player earlier.
Had a weird glitch during the artillery segment where everytime I reached the canal, I died. Not from being hit by anything, there was literally an invisible line that triggered death whenever I crossed it.

Got around it by waiting for the rest of the squad to get to the canal first, then running over.

Other fun glitches included the squad not moving up until I either pushed them, or ran through far enough to trigger their teleporting to me, and them being entirely missing during the tank mission (even in cinematics) until I restarted the mission from the beginning.

Also, this appeared in the middle of the previous thread, but I didn't manage to read through all the way so I don't know if it was brought up - someone mentioned seeing an ammo icon next to someone else's name, but not getting any points for dispensing ammo.

The indicators that appear next to names when you point at them show context-sensitive things for when you hit Q (or whatever you have spotting/"socialize" bound to); basically once you see one of those, if you hit Q your guy will say something like "Hey, I got your ammo right here", depending on what it is.

There's also a "hey, I need a ride" one for when you look at a vehicle with available seats, but it's probably not that effective considering the noise vehicles make :?

I unlocked the M60 last night after an epic game of 9000 points scored and something like 31 kills to 8 deaths.

The M60 is not overpowered. You can shut up about it. You can't see shit with it, it fires slow, and if you wanna put a scope on it you lose probably one of the best specializations in the game.

Every kill is 50 points, you just get +10 points if you kill with a Headshot. You'll hear the helmet hits a lot, but not necessarily kill the guy with the headshot. I like the game a lot, but for the love of god... spot spot spot.

Laser implies that it has a steady stream of bullets, which it doesn't. The M60 fires slow.

True about putting the 4X or even the red dot on it, but if you do that then you lose out of some serious healing ability.

Not to mention the damage. Round-for-round, the M60 hits almost twice as hard as anything other LMG and significantly harder than any other primary (non-sniper) weapon in the game. The only non-sniper weapons that out-damage it on a per-shot basis are shotguns and a couple pistols.

I'm speaking as someone who has unlocked it and used it extensively, not just someone who's been killed by it. It's cheese. It needs the damage cut by about 40% and the accuracy reduced significantly. It shouldn't be the most damaging and most accurate LMG at once.

I like the idea of shotguns in this game more than I actually like them. I seem to get killed with them all the time, yet I've yet to kill more than two people with them in a match.
