And the fact that he's all excited about delving into the mommy issues of all the characters AGAIN after doing the same thing in the PS2 version isn't worthy of snark because...?
Also Midnight Club doesn't involve the Yakuza and other gangs near as I can tell. GTA does.
From what I can tell from Gamespot's summary, he isn't 'all excited' about delving into their mommy issues, their backstories will just be given in live action cutscenes during the story mode. I'm not sure what the fuck your big deal about that is, most of the people that played Black (the PS2 version) probably won't be buying the game for its single player.
And yes because we all know if a game has gangs, it's clearly a GTA ripoff.
Nah, I think GTA's okay, I just think that far too many people try a little too hard to glom on to that success. Besides, I prefer scrapped ideas that were kind of interesting on paper but didn't work in the implementation.
And because he didn't have any of those (or just chose not to disclose them), it totally warranted insulting the guy.
No matter what he said, you would've found something snarky to say regarding it. Hence why you came off looking far worse than him in your post.
You know how millions were completely obsessed with devouring every iota of information in advance of The Phantom Menace or Jurassic Park? You remember how some magazine had a 40+ pages devoted to Matrix Reloaded?
Our industry is stuck in that mode constantly. Add to that our obsession with "artgames" and their "messages", not to mention how journalists, gamers and others are completely enveloped in the marketing circus constantly.
Those two paragraphs were both terrible, the second in particular. I’m not saying he doesn’t have something in the vicinity of a point, but he’s hardly the first to make it, and his phrasing is entirely too simplistic, broad, and insulting. Is he saying no gaming press outlet gives bad scores to games from major publishers? None? Ever? And the use of “Fanitsu” and “LameSpot” gives me great disincentive to read anything further by him.
Also, ‘our obsession with "artgames" and their "messages"’ seems like it’s in direct opposition to the points above. I’m not going to read the articles to see if it makes any sense in context, because as implied, I already hate the author. I’m going to go ahead and say I hate you, too, at least in the context of gaming criticism, both for linking that troll and for the artgames comment, which implies you think “messages” can’t or shouldn’t exist in interactive media.

Wait... someone linked to insomnia.ac and they weren't being ironic?
I can't say that I'm excited for SC2, but I still preordered it anyway. Mostly because it was in my amazon goldbox, with a base price of $50 rather than 60

Messages are OK. They just don't make up for the absence of good game design, something World of Goo perfectly exhibits. Lots of modern art has messages, but it's still not as pleasant to look at or as technically brilliant as anything by Andrew Wyeth, and the message doesn't compensate for that. Thanks for saying you hate me though, but I suspect that is something you say to lots of people.
So Steam via VAC (Valve anti cheat or something) accidentally banned 12,000 user accounts from playing Modern Warfare 2 over the past couple of weeks.
So what does Valve do? They decide to be an awesome company.
Gabe Newell sent an email to everyone affected, unbanned their accounts, then gave them a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2, as well as a free gift code to give the game to a friend.
I'm impressed.
If this were Ubisoft or Apple or Activision or something, the response would have likely been the respective officer of the company making a press statement that only some small x percent of people were affected and that the problem had been resolved thank you for your patience okthxbai.
The way Valve did it, gets them more loyal customers, spreads positive articles across every gaming website, and gets everyone on the internet to spread the word about how great a thing that was to do and how great a company Valve is; admit the mistake, apologize, fix the screw up, then give away a free game plus a gift.
If they had followed the latter strategy, the result would have been a bunch of sour and pissed off people talking about how busted their thing is. Whether it's Uplay or the Iphone4 or Guitar Hero in mono sound.
Valve do seem impressively adapt when it comes to dealing with their community and internet RAGE. I mean, with the whole Left 4 Dead 2 boycott thing was a case in point. Most devs would happily ignored it because it didn't really make any difference. Because of the way Valve handled it, the two boycott leaders ended up going back and then dismantling their own boycott. It was insane to watch that happen, they were getting flamed by their own group members for having sold out, and Valve just continued on.
I mean seriously, how many devs can actually pull something like that off?
@ Henroid: Man I would not place that bet personally. Does Couscous even track those anymore? Still, I do expect it'll do pretty well.
Waitaminute you want to compare sales between MW2 a console-focused multiplatform game and SC2 a PC-only game in the USA , a console-focused country? What.

Maybe it's a trick bet and he's a post-op transsexual or something.
An interesting thing I noticed while reading the news on IPhone jailbreaking.
In addition to jailbreaking, other exemptions announced Monday would:
• allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers. • allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.
• allow college professors, film students, documentary filmmakers and producers of noncommercial videos to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism or commentary.
• allow computer owners to bypass the need for external security devices called dongles if the dongle no longer works and cannot be replaced.
• allow blind people to break locks on electronic books so that they can use them with read-aloud software and similar aides.
Yeah, a friend of mine pre-downloaded the game, but then cancelled that and went out and preordered it for the midnight launch someplace and got that instead because supposedly the digital download version wasn't going to be activated until later in the day where the retail copy would be ready immediately (well, after the huge install). He's been nuts about it for the past month and he's been playing it all morning.
I like StarCraft, though I'm no good online, and I just can't see spending the $60 right now. It's likely I'll either have it gifted to me from said friend as a "Christmas" present or something, or I'll end up just waiting till all three games are out and in some Battlechest style bundle and I can find it on sale somewhere for cheap.
And the fact that he's all excited about delving into the mommy issues of all the characters AGAIN after doing the same thing in the PS2 version isn't worthy of snark because...?

The fact remains that he's still bothering to delve into their mommy issues in great detail despite the fact that he's done it before and no one really cares. (If people didn't buy Black for single-player, then why the hell would they buy this for single-player?)
Nah, involving gangs doesn't make it a GTA ripoff. Shoehorning in gangs in a game that doesn't need them makes it a GTA ripoff.

Yet that doesn't change that he thought it was a good enough idea to spend at least some time developing it, instead of having a good laugh and moving on to something else.
And I'll accept that I only said snarky things because he's Jaffe if you accept that you're only defending him because he works for Sony. :P (Did you see what I did there?)
Speaking of things ignored by most of us, there's some big shit about to go down in Facebook land.
Multiple news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, are reporting that Disney is currently in late-stage negotiations to acquire social game developer, Playdom. Playdom is one of the largest players in the Facebook space with games including Social City, Sorority Life, Big City Life, and Fanglies.
Early estimates by sources close to the deal are saying the purchase may happen for $500 million. The acquisition wouldn't entirely be a surprise, considering Disney is already an investor in Playdom and has a deal with the company to bring licensed ESPN games to Facebook.
If it happens, Disney would be the second major company to acquire a social game developer. Electronic Arts acquired Playfish last year for an undisclosed amount, and Playfish has already made use of the EA Sports brand with EA Sports FIFA Superstars.
Disney would come equipped with even more properties to take into the social gaming space than EA did. From Mickey Mouse to Hannah Montana to Tron, there are tons of possibilities here.
This likely won't be the last of these acquisitions we'll see, as traditional game publishers are behind the curve in the social space and may not be able catch up quickly enough if they try to enter the market on their own.
Requests for comment from both Disney and Playdom have gone unanswered as of press time.
The fact remains that he's still bothering to delve into their mommy issues in great detail despite the fact that he's done it before and no one really cares. (If people didn't buy Black for single-player, then why the hell would they buy this for single-player?)

I didn't say people didn't buy Black for the single player, I said the people that bought Black probably won't be buying the new one for its single player. As far as I'm aware, the single player is used more to introduce people to the mechanics and world, while the multiplayer's the real focus of the game.
And seeing as the current Twisted Metal has gangs, how exactly doesn't it need them?
Yet that doesn't change that he thought it was a good enough idea to spend at least some time developing it, instead of having a good laugh and moving on to something else.

First off, you realise Jaffe isn't the only guy working on this game, right? Amazingly enough, there's an entire team at Eat Sleep Play working on it (including Scott Campbell and quite a few other former SingleTrac/Incog employees). Who says Jaffe was even the one that came up with those concepts? Hell, how do you even know they spent quite a bit of time on them. All they did was describe each concept in a sentence of two, I'm not sure how the hell you can extrapolate much from that. Unless of course you've got a crazy vendetta, then you can just make shit up.
And yeah, I see what you did there. You ignored that I wasn't the only one that noticed you were making yourself look like a silly goose and instead tried to deflect it by saying I'm 'teh biased'.

Right, which makes all the psychology more than a little superfluous.
And it's Twisted Metal, with crazy-ass characters in the lead. The Yakuza are boring considering what followers of these guys would be like. It's not rocket surgery.

Well, is Jaffe the lead or isn't he? If he's not calling the shots in what happens with his game, then he's a crappy manager.
And well, you DO have a habit of defending Sony-related stuff to the death. Just sayin'.
So they're charging 59.99€ for the digital StarCraft 2, whereas I can get it from any gaming store around these parts for 44.99€ to 49.99€.
Digital was supposed to be cheaper.
According to whom? Given that Blizzard made several deals to appease brick and mortar stores (like the 10am PST digital download lock), I highly doubt the digital download was ever going to be cheaper than a boxed copy.

Messages are OK. They just don't make up for the absence of good game design, something World of Goo perfectly exhibits. Lots of modern art has messages, but it's still not as pleasant to look at or as technically brilliant as anything by Andrew Wyeth, and the message doesn't compensate for that.
Interesting position. I believe if this is the path that gaming holds to, games will never reach the thematic or artistic depths it's capable of. Guernica is not pleasant to look at. Technically, Guernica looks like something a school principal would show the kid's parents as proof their son is going to shoot up his art class someday. Maybe that means GTA is closer to Picasso than Wyeth, and therefore more artistically relevant than Passage.
People have made the argument that Wyeth's stuff is formulaic, populist and sentimental, which sounds like most video games in a nutshell to me, so I guess the comparison is apt. I have no opinion on his work, but you might want to steer clear of any argument that could indirectly imply that Wyeth is in ANY WAY superior to Goya, except maybe the timid assertion that you get warm fuzzy feelings from Wyeth's work whereas Saturn Devouring His Son makes you nauseous with abject, primal fear and you would rather not have vomit on your shoes. Because if we're talking about cultural and artistic relevance, I hope I live to see the day a game can make me react that way, "solid gameplay" be damned.
So I guess the question that must be asked is: What exactly is it you think modern art is trying to compensate for? Because if your answer is "not looking pretty 'nuff", then I have a feeling we occupy distant extremities regarding this art game debate.
NOTE: I'm sorry this has nothing to do with Starcraft. Insert Zerg joke here.
