Digital distribution is definitely going to catch on more than HD, I think. The trend moving the other way, towards portability and smaller videos and iPods and watching movies on your phone.

I don't know about that. I mean, yeah tiny video screens are trendy but the average person still wants to sit down on a couch in front of an entertainment center with a TV large enough not to give you some kind of astygmatism
So everyone is going to have to conform to what the videophiles like?
Yeah, that's what I said when they came out with those new-fangled color TVs. I can see just fine in black and white, thank you very much.
Comparing HDTV and the introduction of color is like comparing HD/BR and DVD.
B&W to color was _huge_.
SDTV to HDTV only matters if you have a TV that's big enough to show the difference, or if you have a smaller TV and look close enough.
My comparison was more to point out the fact that it's simply the direction the market is going. We have better technology now, and soon it will be the standard. Of course it's not nearly as big a leap as B&W to color but it's the same concept. Something better came out and at first it was a novelty, then it was a staple.
Will the cable companies offer analog converters to their customers who don't have HD-TVs, so that they can still watch their shows without having to get a new set?

Most TV's sold now have a digital tuner whether they are HD or not
Most cable companies have cable boxes which will convert the signal for you
It's not that big of a deal

If what I heard about Sony and Blu-Ray not wanting to have anything to do with the porn industry is true, and thus HD-DVDs picking up arguably the largest multimedia industry in the world, it's only a matter of time before Blu-Ray loses out to HD-DVD despite being the better technology...all over again, just like Beta vs VHS. Way to go, Sony.
No. Porn does not dictate format. Blu-Ray is winning.
If all HD porn is going to be exclusively available in HD-DVD, Blu-Ray is ultimately doomed. You can't beat porn, man. It's our pervasive master.
This news bums me because I have an HD-DVD drive in my computer. I'd hate to think that I paid extra for this piece of shit just for a dead technology. Oh well, at least I'll be able to watch The Punisher and Hot Fuzz in HD.

I can beat it to porn
Only if it's midget porn.
Larlar, I disagree. I don't think that porn is going to control the new format. I understand it was pivotal in the VHS thing, but I don't think that we have the same situation here.
In all honesty, I don't get why people even buy porn anyway. How hard is it to find enough porn to beat off to online, without paying? How hard is it to find paysites to satisfy your every porn desire, or bittorrent downloads or whatever?
(I'm asking, I don't know...but I would imagine the answer to be "not hard at all.")

I'm still banking on both blue ray and hd to fail.
DVD's are the tits for me.
And I still don't know a guy who owns an HD-TV.

the issue isn't how hard it is
the issue is that the porn industry is HUGE
so no matter how easy it is, there are still huge numbers of people who will buy porn in HD-DVDs
these are the people that will settle the format war

Yeah but
The difference is that they don't HAVE to buy just HD or Blue Ray
They can still buy DVDs and VHS.
And I'm willing to bet the porn buyers aren't going to spend their big bucks on high quality porn.

As for the HD war
It seems clear Sony has just about gotten out of the game console business and put their full effort into getting Blu-Ray as the dominant format
The PS3 is basically a right off to make people buy Blu-Ray players.
I think if anything they should start selling HD televisions below wholesale price
Despite the popular rumor, there is pornography due to come out on Blu-Ray.
There is more pornography coming out on HD-DVD than Blu-Ray because apparently HD-DVD is a bit cheaper to produce, and obviously porn companies like to save money.
But really, with porn being on the cutting edge of technology and such, the big thing they are getting into now is online distribution- which includes HD downloads.
I'm yet to see anything impressive HD-wise, my dad bought a cheap-ass 720p HDTV and well... adverts look really nice on it I guess, sky+HD has fuck all channels and the TV has to resize regular programming to a smaller size to compensate for the loss of resolution, which is really fucking irritating.

Once someone has seen a proper HD setup, or even a good TV that upconverts the analog signal, there really cant be much argument that HD is the way things are going. One of the reasons I got bored of my Wii (aside from getting sick of sitting alone at night waggling links sword around) was that it only output in 480p, whereas the XBOX 360 can do glorious 1080. You can say that graphics dont make a difference, but it sure immerses me more playing UEFA cup in HD than mario strikers.
Aside from that, having the HD TV was awesome during hockey and football playoffs, who wouldnt wanna watch them in High def on a big screen TV.

I guess it all depends on how you like to spend your free time, but the HD TV has made a ton of my other favorite things better, from DVD's to gaming to sports, etc.

The price of tea
The porn industry no longer supports Earl Grey tea
chaos
edit: not said yet, surprising.
The only thing that gets hurt the way I pirate multimedia is Blockbuster, and I'm more than fine with that.
Because I know a multitude of people who are not aware of this policy, and would be very irritated if random charges showed up on their credit cards.
Tea companies threaten to sue porn industry if they don't rename teabagging
..any suggestions for an alternate name?
