Climbers
made it into smash bros.
Don't tell me who can and can't be in the game.

Well, old-school characters have more weight than relative newbies. I think we're much more likely to see an obscure character from the NES era(like Pit) than some chump in an expensive suit.
Dude's a plumber and it's well established he's a pansy
he'd be a trophy at best.
But Luigi is mario, and Mario has always been in games where he jumps around going on murderous rampages. All that lawyer guy does is lawyer.
Well, hey. The desk slam could make a good earthquake attack, like Donkey Kong's down-B. Make "OBJECTION" work like Roy or Marth's Counter. Give him "Present Evidence" as a projectile attack. And your recovery move could be (PW1 spoilers)
Mia's ghost bailing you out (again).
Standard chop-socky for A moves, and voila. Fully functional Phoenix Wright in Smash.
But yeah, considering that Mega Man has kinda been Capcom's flagship character for over a decade and Phoenix had a few successful DS games, it's pretty clear that the Blue Bomber's who we're getting from Capcom, if anyone.

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
Kirby actually fights enemies.
Peach too (in SMB2).
So do the Ice Climbers.
Phoenix Wright doesn't physically fight.
Very minor PW2 spoilers.
He can, however, bust down doors! You better watch out for... The Phoenix
Alright then. Whenever there'll be
a door
as a character in SSBB I'll call you.

But they are Nintendo characters, and according to the creators of Smash Bros, a representative of Nintendo's early arcade days. How important has Phoenix Wright been to Nintendo?
It's important to a cult following(including me). If they put Mr. Wright in there, Nintendo would have my money forever.

Ice Climbers proves that popularity and 'importance to nintendo' does not need to be a requirement for a character.
Hell, Snake proved that 'importance to nintendo' does not need to be a requirement for a character.
Wright (and the Ouedon dancers, for that matter) are niche characters that would be the perfect sort of surprise for smash.

Oh come on, the Ouendan dancers? That's just stupid. Ice Climber is definitely significant to Nintendo's history, and Snake is significant to gaming(his Nintendo games are no slouches either). Smash Bros has never introduced a current-gen character before, and if they did it would be something really high profile.

Technically, almost all the characters are current-gen.
Plus, Phoenix was originally on the GBA, and got ported to the DS later.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was very hard to find in stores shortly after its North American release because of a shortage due to unexpectedly high demand.[citation needed] Capcom eventually made the decision to ship more units to stores in March 2006.[9] They later issued a new shipment in June 2006, which sold out in a week's time.
Capcom has shipped 100,000 copies as of February 2007.[1]
Reading this thread makes me glad that nobody on this forum is responsible for making this game, for serious.
For serious.
That being said, I find it necessary to contribute a myriad of equally pointless character wantings so that they can be the next debacle of this on-going circus.
Diddy Kong
Toad or Birdo
Poppy Bros Jr. or Waddle Dee or Sir Kibble
Randi/Randy AKA the main character in Secret of Mana (since our sword bros might be takin' a hike)
Kanden (From Hunters)
Darbus (The goron chief, or a goron in general) or Prince Ralis (The Zora, or a Zora in general)
Any hero from Dragon Quest (Who is unlocked on a weekend, thanks to a not-so-true urban myth regarding Dragon Quest games and their ability to be released during school time.)
But to be fair, if we get any Capcom character, it's most likely Megaman.
cough Phoenix Wright cough
Man that wouldn't work at all
Dude's a lawyer and it's well established that he's a pansy
he'd be a trophy at best
If PEACH can get a spot in the game and a good moveset, then why not PW? Quite frankly I'd rather have him in the game than either Mega Man or Sonic.
You mean it'd make more sense to put a lawyer in this fighting game than a fighting robot?
You mean it'd make more sense to put a fluffy singing balloon in this fighting game than a lawyer?
Yes. Christ what is so hard about this?
Because we're talking about Super Smash Brothers, a game renowned for it's wackiness. "It wouldn't make sense" is NEVER a valid reason to write off a character or item as being possible.
Unless it's like "it wouldn't make sense for them to pick x over y." That's a valid argument.

No, yes, alt costume(Birdo), no, no, I doubt Marth and Roy are leaving with the success of Fire Emblem, no, maybe, not a big fan of dragon quest, but whatever.

Now this I agree with completely.
But seriously. This is fucking Smash Bros. "He wouldn't make sense in a fighting game" is the lamest excuse ever.

Captain Falcon races.
Game and Watch is a two dimensional shim sham of the precursors to the NES era.
The fact that a person doesn't physically fight makes little sense in the bizzarro world of smash bros.

So I wasn't remembering exactly right.
http://www.audioentropy.com/
On one hand - Megaman - star of countless NES, SNES, Gameboy, GBA, and DS games, not to mention making an appearance on the N64 and Gamecube.
On the other - Phoenix Wright - star of cult classic GBA and DS series.
Of course, we don't even know if Capcom is on board for this game, so this who argument may be null.
