superman is literally jesus apparently (i do like that page of him stopping a jumper, because that's totally a thing superman would do. the jesus thing? eh not so much)
Know who wrote that page?
Garth Ennis.
Know what happens to every other superhero when Ennis writes them?
i like that ennis hates superheros but i hate that this means people dismiss The Boys out of hand
because its not about how superheros suck
i mean it is according to one of the characters but it's really not
it's about how having absolute power is corrupting and about competence vs incompetence and long plans and slow burns
I've read a few trades of The Boys
and it's not good
it's saying the things you say it is but those themes are couched in Ennis-bullshit
and I'm not putting up with Ennis-bullshit unless it's Hellblazer or Hitman
the first 2-3 trades are not good
once you get past that it's pretty great
it also helps when you realize that literally nobody except Hughie and Annie are remotely close to being good guys and that you're not supposed to agree with anything butcher says
I have my doubts
and I don't have the time for Ennis
he is the Chuck Palahniuk of comics
let's not get carried away here
ennis has written some absolutely incredible shit
his punisher max run is pretty mcuh the best punisher story ever told (follwed by jason aaron's Max series)
I tried to read punisher max but it's got all the same stupid horseshit tropes and awful dialogue that Ennis puts in everything
Hitman was amazing, though
his run on Hellblazer was really good (but so far nobody has had a bad run on Hellblazer)
Preacher was...well, it was good, but the more of Ennis' work I read, the less I like Preacher
if by the same bullshit tropes that are in everything you mean a thing about the troubles and also "the MIC is a bunch of assholes and the real bad guys"
and the second was handled really goddamn well
his punsiher is fantastic
long cold dark is probably my favorite punisher story ever
no, I'm mostly talking about his tendency to be EXTREME for its own sake

I liked the first bit of JMS's run on Amazing, but after the whole Ezekiel story ended, it went completely to shit and I don't understand what happened.
no that part ruled to dang what is wrong with people
that islike
the one thing i wish hadn't been handwaved away
i love the idea of his powers being science-based but with some weird mystical connection to a spider totem
That's what I'm talking about. Sins Past was the FIRST story arc immediately following the Ezekiel wrap up. It seriously hit me like a train, I was like what the fuck is going on here
no, I'm mostly talking about his tendency to be EXTREME for its own sake
this isn't a thing that happens in his max run really though
the super explicit shit is maybe 10% of the violence in the book
and it's brief enough to be shocking without getting old
and it usually serves a purpose (which is usually showing exactly how fucked a situation is/how pissed off frank is)
read The Slavers
it is seriously the height of his run and requires basically zero knowledge of the rest of the series
i agree that ennis has a tendency to be super extreme but in the last few years he's managed to reign himself in and at least have the extreme shit have a narrative purpose

but really the best punisher story is jason aaron's max book
about frank going after the kingpin for twenty-two issues
spoilers at the end frank dies
and not some bullshit thing like he's the spirit and he's faking being dead
no he's a sixty year old man who's been murdering people for forty years and he finally couldn't carry on anymore
it's fucking great

Ugh no... God, I hated Aaron's run on Punisher. Like, loathed it more than than anything in recent memory, except maybe some Mark Millar comics I read by accident once.

what the hell is wrong with you
that shit was great
the whole thing with bullseye, already a fucking loon, trying to get inside frank's head and finally realizing that frank didn't become the punisher because his family died
his familly died so that he could be the punisher
that was great
ennis alludes to it in Born but aaron sat down and showed us that no frank castle the family man died in vietnam
frank's always been good at killing
his family was just the excuse he needed to give himself to do it full time

Oh, you mean that bit of characterization that took him like 6 issues to finally divulge, and then another 6 to "explore" through flashbacks? Yeah that was great. Honestly, it was a neat idea for a new take on the character, but everything that surrounded it was awful.
superman is literally jesus apparently (i do like that page of him stopping a jumper, because that's totally a thing superman would do. the jesus thing? eh not so much)
he's been a jesus analogue since the golden age
but he was made by the children of jewish immigrants
which is approximately as ironic as hitler getting punched out by the aryan ubermensch

I pitched this to DC for a laugh years back. The idea was that, like Death of Superman, we had Rape of Wonder Woman; a twenty-two page rape scene that opened up into a gatefold at the end just like Superman did.

that was not the impression I got
and it shows in the dialogue, too
like there's a part early in punisher MAX where some goombas are in a place where clam chowder is traditionally tomato-based and therefore red, not white
one of them orders some for lunch and is not pleased with this
he yells at the waitress and tells her to bring take it back and bring him chowder that "she didn't have her period in"
hrrrrRRRRRRRRGHGHHGHGHHG
that is so fucking stupid

Race? Goku (unless he's not allowed to Instant Transmission, then he can only win if the race doesn't involve traveling into space)
Fight? Superman (no contest)
Eating contest? Goku
Writing contest? Superman (also probably applies to any kind of test or academic contest)
Fishing contest? Goku
Leadership Abilities? Superman
Most Facebook Friends? Superman (Mr. Satan might beat him, though)
Nah, let's settle this with the most important metric: which one has punched more monkeys/apes?
Even though Saiyans are basically monkey people, Goku has only gotten to punch a handful of them, whereas Superman has punched more monkeys than you can shake a stick at. Thus Superman is the winner.
