How do you vote for someone like Gohmert? Like seriously. How can there be more people that think "Yes, let's send this poor, confused, mentally deficient man to represent us." than not.
I don't think I've ever heard him say anything that wasn't tinfoil hat dodo bonkers.
American voters are amazingly, mind boggling stupid.
I know, I lament this often. But in his case, he is just so obviously mentally disturbed that I'm having a hard time accepting that so many people in Texas are that stupid. The only other person I can think of off the top of my head that's as equally gullible when it comes to crackpot conspiracies is Michelle Bachmann and even then between the two of them I think Gohmert comes out ahead.
I keep thinking "If I was a Republican in Texas, I would be infuriated that the party sent an imbecile like that to Congress" but then I have to remind myself that when I think to myself "If I was Republican" that assumes that as a Republican I want to first and formost attempt to act in good faith for the country.
The kinds of people who vote in GOP primaries in Texas love reps like Gohmert - the nuttier the better! And it's gone ~70% for GOP candidates in the last 4 presidential elections, so it's not like some Dem is going to win there.
Reading between the lines of those results on Wiki it looks like Gohmert got in on after Tom Delay decided they should redistrict in the middle of the decade because 9/11 or some shit.
2002:
John Lawrence REP* 66,081 43.81% 20,030 42.73%
Max Sandlin - Incumbent DEM* 84,765 56.19% 26,847 57.27%
Vote Total 150,846 46,877
2004:Republican Louie Gohmert 157,068 61.5 Increase17.9
Democratic Max Sandlin 96,281 37.7 Decrease18.7
Libertarian Dean Tucker 2,158 0.8
So you can thank Tom Delay. Also I love how wiki includes results back to 2004 but not 2002 for that district.
After Republicans won control of the Texas state legislature in 2002 for the first time in 130 years, they intended to work toward establishing a majority of House of Representatives seats from Texas held by their party. After the 2002 election, Democrats had a 17–15 edge in House seats representing Texas, although the state's voters voted for Republicans in congressional races by a 55-45 margin. After a protracted partisan struggle, the legislature enacted a new congressional districting map, Plan 1374C, introduced in the Texas House by Representative Phil King of Weatherford. In the 2004 congressional elections, Republicans won 21 seats to the Democrats' 11.
On June 28, 2006, the Supreme Court of the United States issued an opinion that threw out one of the districts in the plan as a violation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and ordered the lower court to produce a remedial plan, which it did in Plan 1440C. The Supreme Court ruling was not seen as seriously threatening Republican gains from the 2004 elections.
Thank god the supreme court eventually threw out part of the VRA.
People who vote for Gohmert do so under the "Will this stick it to the libs" mindset. Its fucking awful there is a segment of our voting populace that is spite voting and doesn't give a shit about who they are voting for. This same group also chastises the democratic party for just putting up "not republican" candidates!
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

People who vote for Coburn say the same thing.
Except in Moore. For some reason, there's a prevailing bit of disgust with him in Moore. I'm actually really surprised how long that's lasted... not that it matters anymore, but still.

I can't say I'm surprised, but really what the fuck is WRONG with people?

A man was found hanged by the neck in some state, Mississippi I think. He served 27 years for killing a lady ina robbery, but him getting hung to an awful LOT of the commenters was "justice being served".
There is a dangerous undercurrent of asshole stupidity in our electorate.

We're still waiting to see if that was a suicide or an actual lynching.
Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.

If the Supreme Court strikes down subsidies to states using the federal health insurance exchanges, Rep. Paul Ryan was asked, should they set up their own exchanges to prevent people from losing their insurance?
"Oh God, no…The last thing anybody in my opinion would want to do, even if you are not a conservative, is consign your state to this law," the Wisconsin Republican told state legislators Thursday during a conference call organized by the Foundation for Government Accountability, a conservative think-tank. The foundation provided a recording of the call.
I think it's very generous of Republicans to volunteer to continue subsidizing the Medicaid expansion in Democratic states while not expecting anything in return.

gotta make up for the fact that republican controlled states are generally a net loss for the federal budget.

"Look, there was a free and fair democratic election, the only nation in the region that will have such a thing," the Arizona lawmaker said. "The president should get over it. Get over your temper tantrum, Mr. President. It's time that we work together with our Israeli friends and try to stem this tide of ISIS and Iranian movement throughout the region, which is threatening the very fabric of the region."
You goddamned un-American piece of shit, your father and grandfather are spinning in their graves because of you. Every single fucking sentence in that statement is a bald-faced lie and you know it. You've chosen to disrespect the man America elected to lead it on behalf of an alien politician in a foreign country, and for that you should be dismissed from Congress and registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
Rrrgh. Everything in that little snarkfest, especially the bolded, ticks me off. And it's not as if he's some upjumped franchise owner or pastor from the sticks, he knows not to do this and yet he still does it.
Remind me again why we can't register AIPAC and the ADL as foreign organizations and seize Sheldon Adelson's money.
There are a lot of things I would like to say about John McCain, but unlike him I'm a decent human being that detests the feeling of feces erupting from my mouth

I see Mr failed-presidential-run conveniently forgot that ISIS and Iranian movement only happens because he and his ilk mounted a failed invasion that did nothing but destabilize the area. Of course responsibility and republicans is like oil and water.
I'm not sure the republicans are smart enough to realize Iran has oil, and that's why Iran wants nuclear power..so they can stop burning their own oil in power plants and sell it for more profits.
I think they are pro-bomb Iran because they thing Iran is a stereotype beard stroking villain who wants to nuke Israel.
I would love it if American News Media suddenly had a resurgence of integrity and stopped booking conservatives so they can go full nutbag with their bullshit.

I'm pretty sure Iran would very much like a nuclear weapon so the crazy fucking super power doesn't invade them the next time it's stupid enough to elect a Republican President.

Not to give other facets undue credit, but nobody watches cable news. Seriously. PBS News Hour has a larger viewership than all of cable news combined for that timeslot, and PBS is the least watched broadcast news show.

This is an unimaginable amount of lack of self awareness.
pointing out their inconsistencies is...unproductive, at best
their hypocracies are often fueled by the paranoia that Democrats are doing secretly all the corrupt, insane bullshit that Republicans do openly.
