PAX East Information and FAQ (ASK QUESTIONS HERE!)
I think I've decided to go with a Nexus One instead. If all else fails I will have Internets and I can view train schedules that way.
Sorry for the weird question, and thanks!

Any suggestions or ideas, etc? Feel free to E-Mail me at Codemonkey85 AT GMail. Make sure to include "PAX" in the subject!
I also have http://tinyurl.com/yktxluy a community events calender, for things such as the Pre-pax dinner, the pub crawl, etc., and am currently working in google earth to build a map with everything on it, and local attractions.
Sorry if this has been answered, but is it possible to transfer tickets if I chose Will Call instead of mailing the tickets? Unfortunately, I cannot afford travel and hotel expenses, so I have to abort my plans to attend.

That should do the trick just fine. Bus/Subway schedules are a joke anyway, the commuter rail is the only system that actually follows it's schedule.
I'd guess most of the places you'll want to go will be close enough to a subway stop that you can avoid the bus system all together. The MBTA website's trip planning feature isn't too bad, plus Google Maps supports the local public transportation system. Feel free to PM me if there's somewhere specific that seems like a pain in the ass to get to

1. When do things start the first day, and do you have to be at the convention center exactly when they start? I live in Massachusetts and therefore would like to save money on hotel by driving in on the 26th, but check-in time for the Midtown is 3pm. I suppose I could leave the center and check into my hotel, but wouldn't like to have to do that.
2. If I do BYOC (again, dependent on when things start, as as far as I can tell you definitely have to come in early if you need to set up for BYOC), is it okay if my machine is... for lack of better words, missing a side? My side panel broke a long time ago and I hope that's not an issue. I'm not exactly scared of people stealing my cruddy hardware anyway.
3. Related to the above, DO you absolutely have to come in early on the very first day to set up for BYOC? I understand why if so.

About byoc I am not 100% sure but nearly positive you need to come early to setup for byoc, but the byoc thread would answer you questions far better than i ever could.
About the hotel question i have stayed in many hotels and most all of them are ready before 3pm. A call ahead would probably get a room cleaned up early so you don' have to wait long if at all. Worse comes to worse they can hold your bags. Also most places would have you do the paperwork and they would place your bags into your room and just have you pick up a key when you come back from pax. A phone call to the place goes a long ways though.

1. PAX opens 2PM Friday, and no, you don't have to be there start of day.
2. Shouldn't be an issue, but BigRed can tell you for sure.
3. No, but you would definitely want to check in on Friday.
Question: for those of you who are already familiar with Boston's public transportation, do you know if GPS devices like this are useful? Are bus and train schedules predictable enough that I can mostly count on the device's instructions to be accurate? Or would the device probably not be accurate or useful enough to be worth the money?
Strictly speaking, there is NO schedule for the subway. It simply runs every certain number of minutes depending on the day and time. The MBTA's schedule and web site in general is your friend in this regard. Only the commuter rail trains (purple lines on the maps) are predictable in terms of showing up at a particular stop at a particular time. Everything else is sort of like particle physics - you aren't so much getting an assurance of service so much as probability wave form.
It was built in part in the 90s - the 1890s - so there are some limitations in the T's design that reduce it's reliability. But it will usually get you to and fro, and it's rare that there is a delay longer than half an hour. Don't shave airport times close and you'll be all set. Also, the T shuts down MUCH earlier than some other cities' public transit.
As for device accuracy and usefulness, most GPS units are too agressive when they calculate ETA through boston's high traffic areas. However, they will get you there. If you're driving at all and have not lived in the city for at least 1/2 your life, they're basically required as the streets are not outsider friendly.
For PAX East, I've heard people say it'll be a pain to drive into Boston. Why do they say that?
What about if you drive to an area a few miles outside of Boston, then take public transportation the rest of the way? What is public transportation like in Boston?
Okay, thanks for your prompt answers guys. Sorry I didn't realize there was a FAQ thread (Gah. I administrate a forum I should be better about this.) Will probably register for BYOC then. Glad to hear that a missing side panel is not an issue.
When I ordered my tickets I did not include my apartment number in my address. Could someone please help me so my badge will get mailed to me? I can't find any way to fix my address.

This alternate option has been brought up before, and apparently it will save you money on parking. If you are not savvy in finding a discount parking garage, the hotels or public garages will hit you for $40 per day, and you can get parking for at least half of that if not better outside the city.
Personally I drove into Boston once and didn't have much trouble aside from GPS not working between the often passing through tunnels in the part of town I was in. If you scope out your route on a map ahead of time you will be fine. Since I have 4 people in my car splitting the cost, it won't be so bad, so we are driving straight to the hotel, paying an absurd amount for parking, and never touching the car all weekend.
Parking on the outskirts of the city and taking the T in is a great cost effective idea. I typically park at Wellington Station and take the orange line in.
But once again, the T shuts down early (last train leaves at 12:30am, officially stops running at 1am) so if you are planning to be out late keep that in mind.
Speaking from a total tourist perspective. I been in down town Boston 2 times neither time was enjoyable being a passenger or driver. Streets were confusing and most were 1 way and was easy to get lost or thrown off track because of a wrong turn. With that being said i can not speak for the public transportation system either because i have not used it at all. If i was coming into Boston and did not need a car i would not bring one. This being said do as you wish but just giving my experience from a total tourist perspective.

They're working on the tourneys. When the tourney games/formats/times become known, there will be an official tourney thread here for PC/Console/Tabletop.
BYOC sells out quick, so if you're thinking about doing so, sign up now.
If you're signing up for BYOC just for the tourneys though, there should be no need, because I think the only time tourneys have been BYOC-only was for WoW PvP, everything else uses the PCs in the freeplay area.

All the official PC tournaments are done in Freeplay.
The BYOC-Only stuff are just little contests, they have nothing to do with the official tournament list. Its just stuff for fun.

Figured that was the case, but I do remember there being an official BYOC-only WoW tourney in PAX of yore, so I put in all of those CYA words.
So a couple that my wife and I know have broken up after 6 or 7 years and because of that his ex will not be going to PAX. Due to that my wife does not want to go to PAX as going to hang out in Boston with his ex was her main reason for wanting to go.
Can passes be transferred to someone else in a situation like this if we contact someone working for PAX?
There's normally last minute trade/sale of passes if I remember right from people who have things come up last minute to others that weren't able to order earlier. You'll probably be fine.
Passes WILL sell out, too, so hold onto that puppy.
So it's not like some cons where they are locked to the person's name? At Otakon we had to show ID to pick up our passes, but if the things that come in the mail are the actual passes that wont be an issue, ja?
About the refund thing, we don't want to return it if we don't have to, we will easily find someone else to use it, just want to make sure someone can who is not the original person on the order.

Badges don't have any identifying information on them at all, so feel free to sell it to whomever.
Are international ticket orders (via FedEx) also going to be sent out two weeks before the event, or are they sent soon after they're ordered? The writing on the registration page is a bit ambiguous.

Internationally purchased passes (including Canada) were not mailed out in 2008 or 09 and will likely be the same situation this year. You have to pick up your pass at the Will-Call line. Bring a photo ID and your order confirmation.

I'm just wondering if any sports game/simulation companies, like the local to Boston "iRacing" crew will be at PAX. I know some folks aren't really sports game fans, but they are local, and it is a gaming convention... anyone know?

It's not unusual at pax prime for a few byoc people to come in Saturday morning, and that's totally cool.
Yes, but you may want to notify the hotel as some have policies about it.
Either that or you could contact your hotel about Early check in, and stop by to drop off your stuff before you hit up PAX
I know Im hitting Boston at 8 AM on a monday, and The Lenox said my room will be ready by then, and that I can check in when I arrive.
