Mario & Luigi: Globin of the Year

Further proof there is no God, Wednesday is going to be a day of wallet suicide. Two games competing for your gaming time: both worthy of such. You may have heard of one, and this is the other.

But first, a history lesson.

Mario + RPG = Awesome

SuperMarioRPGSNESCoverArtUS.jpg
Once upon a time, two companies got together to make an RPG. One had the most popular franchise of all time and the other the most popular RPGs of all time. Both companies shared a history of shitting gold and sharing it with the world.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the name of that game.

Release for the Super Nintendo towards the end of its lifespan, the game once again proved Mario's flexibility and ability to pretty much be awesome in any genre. Awesome soundtrack, cool story and more interactive turn-based combat has made Mario RPG one of the best games on the SNES and for many the best in the series.

It's available on Wii via Virtual Console. If you haven't played it, stop reading this thread and do so NOW.

Mario - Dimension = Awesome

Papermario.jpg
The Nintendo 64 had one problem: no Squaresoft. Certain issues during the SNES days lead Nintendo to part ways with the company. But how would we get our Mario RPG sequel?

Goddamn Intelligent Systems, that's who.

Adding a quirky style that made the characters out of 2D paper on a 3D plane, the series was more light-hearted than Seven Stars and became know for wacky humor. Thousand Year Door, in particular, has an awesome translation job and is hilarious. Super Paper Mario is unique in that it's a sidescroller with RPG elements.

Paper Mario is also on Virtual Console.

Mario + Luigi = AWESOME

MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSagaGBACoverArtUS.jpg
The handhelds decided they wanted their own Mario RPG, so Nintendo grabbed AlphaDream. You'd think a developer whose primary experience was making Hamtaro games wouldn't be a smart choce. But you'd be foolish.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, was released and the world trembled at the awesome contained within. It's my personal favorite of all the RPGs, even the SNES original. It really feels more like a Mario game and wonderfully fleshes out the personalities of Mario and that green dude.

The combat in Mario & Luigi is also different. It takes the interaction that all the games have and pushes it to the limit. If you fuck up your button presses, the attack will totally fizzle. And many boss battle REQUIRE you to find the patterns in their attacks and avoid them. You're not finding the right timing to take less damage, but rather to goddamn LIVE. Making this more complicated is that Mario and Luigi have their own buttons and you gotta keep track of both.

Partners in Time was the first DS release, and a strong effort. It's simply not as charming as the first. Maybe I just hate time travel and all the baby characters. Nonetheless, I recommend it.

Now, let's discuss the sequel.

Mario_%26_Luigi_3_NA_Cover.PNG

Some illness is causing Toads to bloat up into horrible balls. Bowser ate a mushroom and is now part hoover (the vacuum, not the former President). Fawful is back and has more fury than ever. Shit is truly going down.

Did I mention that Mario and Luigi were eaten by Bowser? Yeah, feces meet fan.

M&L 3 is as much a Bowser game as it is Mario. You get to battle as Bowser and even grow huge in Godzilla-esque battles with the stylus. The brothers, on the other hand, have to find a way out of Bowser while also fixing anything wrong with him. Bowser will, in essence, be replacing the babies from Partners in Time.

Reviews are already coming in and coming in strong. There's already a bit of talk holding the game as the best Mario RPG yet.

Sigh, another five weeks until Australia gets that game. Damn it Nintendo, where's the love?

My love for Paper Mario is fairly obvious, but the handheld RPG's and me have had difficult times. They're fantastic games, but I couldn't beat the final boss of Partners In Time after hours and when I found a copy of Superstar Saga a couple of months ago, it crapped itself and wiped my save file

Still, will be looking forward to this, likely day 1.

Oh, I just remembered the awesome final boss music for Inside Story I found while on TV Tropes a while back.

I am ashamed to say it, but I am holding off on getting M&L3 until I hear some reviews. I loved the first one on the GBA, but Partners in Time wasn't as good. I barely tolerated Baby Mario in Yoshi's Island and I hated them in Mario Kart, and they weren't any better in Partners in Time.

And I'm still holding onto the hope that one day, we'll get a proper sequel to Super Mario RPG.

Four reviews in at Metacritic, giving it an average of 94.

The return of Fawful and no babies is what really seals the deal.

Aw, what's with the baby-hate? I understand how annoying little crying Mario was in Yoshi's Island, but come on, they're babies. They were totally rad in Double Dash and I was pleased to see them return. I agree that Partners in Time wasn't as good as Superstar Saga, but I mean... babies.

I hope that the babies pop up in RPG3 just to spite you haters. I also plan on picking this up immediately - if only to see some of the best writing in gaming and hear my favorite brand of fake-Italian.

Also, is it still standard practice to release japanese games way later in the west, or is it just Nintendo that still does this? It's been out for eight months in Japan.

Yes, generally with RPGs they would prefer people be able to read them without learning japanese first.

I don't know why it was, but for some reason, giving Luigi a Lightning Ball, compared to Mario's Fireball, seemed like such a perfect fit. It's weird that because of that combination that I think Superstar Saga was my favorite.

Super jazzed for this but probably going to wait for the Euro release rather than importing, simply as I have too much already waiting for my DS time. Layton, Scribblenauts, Time Hollow and Starfy are all demanding my attention.

Oh DS, when will you ever stop with the great games?!

Controversial opinion, but it's the least favourite of mine. Probably because I didn't play it until many years later and after I'd played Paper Mario.

Even though it brought in many new things, to me it still has too many lingering elements of 'Let's make Final Fantasy with mario in it!' as opposed to the sequels which are all their own beast.

Super Paper Mario is the only reason I hesitate on this game. While obviously not an RPG, that game was peppered with enough annoyances, bullshit, and outright developer cockslaping that it turned an otherwise decent game into something I can firmly say I will never have any desire in replaying ever again.

Hopefully they didn't use any of that design philosophy while making this game.

I downloaded Super Mario RPG the very beginning of May this year.

I'm thinking I should have played it in it's heyday, because it was a little underwhelming. After playing the magnificence that was Superstar Saga years ago and part of Paper Mario, Mario RPG feels like a few steps backwards.

I haven't picked it back up since.

My only problem with Partners in Time was the "Bag of HP" boss design philosophy. Even if you knew how to beat the boss, you still had a good three to five minutes of pure bashing to grind through, even using your best attacks. In Superstar Saga, the challenge was simply to learn the tells before you screwed up enough to get killed. Once you weren't throwing away turns on healing out the damage you took, the battles ended in a flash. (Especially if you got a few game-breaking equipment combos.)

So long as they go back to that more action-oriented style, I'll be happy. And I strongly intend to buy the game anyway, just to see Mario and Luigi bash each other with hammers and yell at each other in perverted Italian.

Besides the linearity and all of the other little pet peeves, in my opinion there were two things that Partners in Time did wrong that's hard to forgive it for.

First, there's the level design. I'm willing to give up a bit of non-linearity in exchange for clever level design, but the areas in PiT really weren't that interesting compared to the original game. SS had levels that required you to split up the party for extended periods of time and accomplish various tasks, while PiT usually just involved sending in the babies while the adults didn't do much. The dungeons also almost always had one more floor than they actually needed, leading me to feel bored by the end.

Second, there's the time travel mechanic, or lack thereof. PiT handles time travel in about the dumbest way possible of any story I've ever seen. Travelling almost exclusively to areas in the past that are never seen in the present is obnoxious, but the worst part has to be gettting attacked by a non-time travelling enemy in the past (so there's no excuse about the timeline being changed) and yet being completely suprised about it in the present. Why does no one remember anything that happened back then? Did they get their memories wiped at some point in the intervening time, and if they did, why aren't they more worried about the cause of the memory wipe than about some threat that obviously resolved itself since everything is fine in the present?

The 2 handheld Mario games rule all, as do the first 2 Paper Mario games. Mario RPG is really good as well, even if it's showing it's age a bit. Super Paper Mario is okay, but damn tedious after awhile. I can't imagine playing through it twice.
