Or at least, that's what I'm in the mood for. So what are some decent God of War clones this gen, maybe some that I overlooked? Are there many? Looking for PS3 and 360 games here, folks. We're not getting Dante's Inferno or God of War III until 2010 and I've got an itch that needs scratching.
I've already gone through X-Men Origins: Wolverine and am currently going through Conan.
Hmm...that's one I actually haven't played. I may have to seek it out.

Play Conan for the 360 (though I think there's a PS3 version). You can get it at most places for around $10 if you can even find it, but I've put more time into that game that most big budget games I own (such as Rock Band, Gears of War 2, and Halo 3).

Do relatively brutal combo-based 2D sidescrollers count? Because there's the Vanillaware games Odin Sphere and Muramasa: the Demon Blade. I know you don't have a Wii but Odin Sphere is PS2.
It's not of the bloody violent sort, but personally I find the combo system/hacking through waves of enemies to be fairly similar.
Where the fuck is the mention of Devil May Cry 5 btw? Its been ages since the last one.
Unbreakable don't get Viking, its a decent if mediocre game but you'll get bored very fast, the character moves so slow across the map its just a pain in the ass getting anything done.

I actually played through Odin Sphere, despite not being that crazy about it (I thought the whole circular area thing was just really dumb). Looked gorgeous, though.
I've been wondering how long it would be after I got a 360 before I took the plunge into Too Human. I honestly have no clue what I'll think of it. So divisive.
Too Human is worth it cheap, it just doesn't live up to Dyack's promises and the control system - while capable of great things - verges on broken (much like GunValkyrie).
Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce controls are what Too Human should have been, but that's not out in proper console form for a while yet.

<AtlusParker> Sorry I'm playing Pokemon and vomiting at the same time so I'm not following the conversation in a linear fashion.
While it doesn't really involving swords or intricate combos, I can never recommend The Warriors enough. It was on PS2/OXBOX, and was seriously one of my favorite games from that gen.
You just punch/kick/bat/knife the ever loving shit out of rival gangs, often backed up by your own gang. I just cannot stress how very satisfying and brutal the combat is. You can seriously mess up guys with punches to the stomach and curb stomps. One time I was playing multiplayer with a friend, completely owning him, while another friend walked into the room. He saw my character sitting on his while just punching the shit out of his face, sending blood everywhere, and he just said "jesus christ".
From what I played of Ninja Gaiden 2, it doesn't feel nearly as good as the first one did. Though I can't explain why. It just wasn't as tight, if that makes sense.
I'd just like to throw in my two cents and say Viking: Battle for Asgard wasn't that bad. I actually had fun with it, and if you're only looking for a storm of violence it's pretty much up your alley. I certainly wouldn't give it more than a rental, though. It was better than Conan, anyway (though Conan certainly outdoes it in limb-severing).

Because NGI was actually fun to play, while NGII was full of cheapout garbage...>_>
No, you're right. For all the good the new weapons systems were, the rest of the design package was severely lacking compared to the first game. Luckily Sigma 2 is out in a couple of weeks, so hey!

Personally, I think that the second game feels better than the first so far as Ryu's controls and abilities are concerned. It's the enemy design that falls flat. While throwing several hundred fireballs and exploding shurikens at you from the other side of the camera.
Too Human is a Diablo clone with all the shallower bits of Devil May Cry slapped on top. It's not a bad game (also not a good game), but it's pretty far from the God of War experience. You spend a lot of time mucking about in menus and wandering aimlessly around cyberspace.

You know, I honestly hope they venture out of the whole gothic asethetic with DMC5. I remember quitting DMC4 early because it looked just like DMC1. A change in setting would be nice.
(never played DMC3 and have been told multiple times not to play DMC2)
I actually feel your pain on this and i'm going to be picking up WET this week probably. (still have to try the demo). The hellboy game is a beat em up, but i'm sure its blood content will be toned down. (also it got terrible scores.)
edit: Other games that are not gow clones but are vaguely related, Dynasty warriors? I'm sure you can pick up one of the recent ones for next to nothing. Dark messiah of might and magic has brutal and fantastic combat.

I mean the earlier ones were more like resident evil with a tad of somewhat sluggish combat, but from what I hear 3 and maybe DoD are more action-oriented?
Know it's not current gen but Godhand? Custom combo's and some preaty over the top specials. Unfortunatly for all the punching of faces you do in the game there is a signifigant lack of dismemberment.

I hope the next DMC doesn't make me replay through every damn level twice and fight each boss 3 times just to lengthen it.
I liked DMC3 a lot more just because it didn't do that crap. It was a pain in the ass to get working right on the computer though. It reversed the sticks on the 360 controller by default, and came with no easy way to fix that. But for the $5 I payed for it, more than worth it.

Can the top half of the body be separated from the lower half?
"Uh, I have never said that you are not good at what you do. It's just that what you do is not worth doing." -S.C.
Already beat it.
Not sure if I'd call it a God of War clone though...outside of the QTE-driven boss battles, anyways.
EDIT: No one I know owns a Wii.
Edit: Prototype also has much severing of limbs but I wouldn't call it a god of war clone.
MadWorld aside, I've played all the mentioned here.
More people need to do stuff in this genre!
Ninja Gaiden II/DMC4 aren't clones of God of War, but they're all in the same genre.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is a bit like those games for about a 3rd of the time, but there is also stealthy bits (but it is stealth with ass kicking).
Red Faction Guerilla has pretty fun melee, try the demo and see what you think.
I've not played it, but Prototype?

Read my book. (It has a robot in it.)

Pretty much everything on 'next-gen' has been mentioned. There hasn't been that much released in that genre lately.
You might like Prototype but it's open-world instead of a linear level progression.
There's more stuff if you're willing to go back to last-gen. (God Hand, Bloodrayne 2, Shinobi, Mark of Kri, Shadow of Rome etc..)

Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) sent my controller flying at the wall.
I haven't played NGII for this reason. :P
Shinobi and Nightshade were great; I actually loved the level design in Shinobi.
Oh...then don't play NGII.
If NGI had to throwing your controller at the wall, NGII will have to mailing pipebombs directly to Tecmo.
Because NGI was actually fun to play, while NGII was full of cheapout garbage...>_>
Just my opinion though.

Somebody needs to get to prodding Capcom about this. I'm not afraid to give my love to Platinum if they don't get it the fuck together.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
It's been a year and seven months.
