Some huge movies before I shut down for the evening, Columbia Pictures has finally officially announced a sequel to Silent Hill, which will begin production after the completion of Sony Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Afterlife. Screenwriter Roger Avary and Samuel Hadida of Davis Films are returning. Read on for the skinny. No director has been named yet.
Roger Avary and Samuel Hadida of Davis Films are climbing back up "Silent Hill."
The screenwriter and producer have signed on for a sequel to their 2006 video game adaptation.
The original, based on the Konami game, centered on a woman who travels to a desolate town to seek help for her ailing daughter only to find supernatural occurrences taking place there.
Davis Films aims to shoot the movie next year after "Resident Evil 4," which it's now prepping.
TriStar released the original "Silent Hill," which earned $47 million domestically; the label has not confirmed involvement on the follow-up.
Avary, best known for his work on Quentin Tarantino scripts such as "Pulp Fiction," also is penning video game adaptation "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" for Davis Films.
The deal is one of several projects for Hadida's company. The French-based banner has come to Toronto with two projects -- Michael Bassett's "Solomon Kane" and the Terry Gilliam-helmed "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus."
I know the first film got some mixed reactions, but personally, I loved it. I just hope they get Christophe Gans back.
Before the common complaints about the first film hit, FYI:
-The exposition at the end was added in post-production because test audiences were dumb and didn't get the plot. Sadly, that was probably reflective of audiences as a whole.
-Supposedly they added more stuff with Sean Bean's character because of studio involvement.
So the few flaws the film had weren't Gans' fault. That said, if the film gets to be done the right way(and hopefully with a talented director), it should be awesome. Especially if they adapt the second game directly, which I think the first film's ending left a great window for.
Now I don't know about saying Christopher killed his wife like in Silent Hill 2, but it could be an interesting psychological film about him searching for his missing family, either way.

Just to clarify, Sean Bean's character his whole story arc was added in after the fact because people flipped out that there weren't any men in the movie.
Let's hope they fix this.

This was a better Silent Hill before Silent Hill starring Sean Bean (as James olol).
Nah actually they were both terrible.
Everything from a visual and audio perspective were wonderful.
So I'm not really optimistic.

No matter what, keep Gans.
Brotherhood of the Wolf had similar issues. I didn't like the story, but I loved the visuals.

The script was shit. I really hope they manage to fix that particular flaw in the sequel.
Because I liked that one.
It's kind of creepy and all, but it's hardly the best, especially compared to the others, like the one above.
No it wasn't the exposition that blew it was the entire plot, the cult was a developed entity in the games, albeit you had to actively look for information in the games to get everything. Instead of going with what was there they went with a bunch of paranoid puritans. There was a huge backstory and they didn't use any of it. Also they didn't focus too much as the town as an entity itself separate from Cheryl or whatever her name was in the movie.
So, yes it was Avary/Gans fault. I blame the fall of the franchise in on Konami for whoring it out so badly and Team Silent jumping onto Team Siren, also I don't get why Akira Yamaoka gets so much credit for these games because he really didn't hold any prominent positions other than music during the production of the first two.
Still, his music is really good, and You're Not Here being in the end credits was the best.
They even started the film with the first few chords from Silent Hill 1's opening.
The rest of the score was by someone elee, but I think he emulated Yamaoka's style really well.
The odds of something that wonderful happening are very low

I really don't know what to think about a sequel, except that I hope it doesn't go through as many production problems as the first one apparently did. They've got the right idea, but it needs more consistency, especially in the script. Will be curious to see who's directing. I won't object to Gans again, but I'm wondering if there isn't some unearthed talent out there, à la Neill Blomkamp.

Wow... Aaron Eckhart would be perfect. That was spot on.
Unless they reboot it, which might be for the best.
Blomkamp would also be a good directing choice, but Gans loves Silent Hill, so why keep him from his baby?

Pretty much. Outside of the cop, I loved the first two acts of the first film. The last act was terrible and brought the entire picture down.
That felt like it was also added in post. The film should've started from the van, like the game.
That was cringeworthy.
HOMMMMMMMMMMMMME SILENT HILL SILENT HILL!
I think she wants to go to Silent Hill.
I especially liked how they replaced the fog (realll spooky ) with ashes from a perpetually burning mine.
I'd like them to do a new story with this though and ignore Sean Bean like SH2 ignores SH1. I'd also like them to take the imagery further, so something is always falling in Silent Hill and Cheryl and mom see it as ash because thats the part of the world they were brought into, the one with the cult. But someone else goes there and sees it as fog or snow.
The really disappointing thing is that you could actually see the potential for a good movie, potential in the script that just couldn't be realized, good visuals, and some genuinely freaky individual moments. But they just couldn't bring out that potential.
I thought they started working on the script for sequel right after the first movie came out, so it's been in development for quite a while, but just hasn't gone anywhere. I would be interest to see where they take it, if it's going to be an actual sequel or an different story with little to no relation to the first movie. My biggest fear is that it's going to be like Pulse, where Sharon/Alessa/Samael have escaped the confines of Silent Hill out into the world and destroyed civilization, and a group of scientists, priests, and "freedom fighters" think they have a way to put an end to the madness. I really hope they don't do this, but knowing the way Hollywood works...
Seriously, those were some great boots.

I sort of agree with you, except that I'd rather just play Silent Hill 2 again than watch that movie.
I read that as "Boobs" at first and was understandably confused.
Most of my friends were kind of shocked at the barbed wire rape thing. But the leader of the insane religous cult being ripped apart by the horror their insane beliefs created? I was just short of cheering :P
'Finally' implies someone was waiting for it. That someone was anticipating it. That the issue of this film seeing daylight (or foglight) was literally on the fence and the flutter of some misguided fool's heart pushed it into being.
One trick that helps me enjoy video game movies is to envision them kind of as spin-offs sort of Marvel's What-If series or DC's Multiverse comics. With that mindset I find that I enjoy quite a few 'video-game' movies such as Max Payne and Silent Hill. It doesn't always work, but it's better than being upset.
Bah, the first movie was a perfect representation of the games, both visually, and in terms of having a weird plot that makes little sense and shitty dialogue.
No one plays Silent Hill because of the compelling conversations that take place within.
Oh my God
You are a genius.
