Teach me Flasks

So I'd like to buy a flask for a buddy of mine for his bday. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about these awesome beverage-containers. I'm not sure what size, style, material, etc to get. A few points

-he is 5'10 170lbs (and in excellent physical condition). I'd like the flask to be able to function as a liquor-smuggling device to the ball games and such. I'm not sure if 10 or 8oz is appropriate for this use.

-it will get beaten up. He like camping and motorcycling and being active. Polished steel will probably get all scratched up and not look good in a few years.

-I'd like to get it engraved with his initials. Monogram would be preferable, but if you find one that only does text I can live with it.

-not sure if the type of liquor is important, but right now he's on a belvadier kick. He also likes moonshine and whiskey.

-a little research taught me that i should want a funnel to go with it, and glass lining is preferred so he can store the liquids in it for more than 2-3 days.

Last point...I'm looking at spending $40 or less. Thanks for all your help!

Sounds like you got a pretty good idea of what you're looking for.

Only store hard alcohol in them, as they are a bitch to clean. Funnels are nice if you don't want to waste some precious Belvedere.

I'm mostly having trouble finding an online store that sells glass-lined engravable steel flasks. The glass-lined part is the hardest to find. I've found plenty of glass flasks, but I'd rather it be plated in steel so it wont shatter all over when dropped.

If its glass lined and steel outside, and you do drop it, wouldn't you end up with a booze 'n' glass cocktail on the inside? Personally, I'd rather have it destroyed than drink glass.

I always thought that glass lined meant that it was a glass container in a leather cozy.

Steel covering glass seems like an awful dicy proposition. If this is being used actively Im gonna go ahead and say that no good can come out of it.

Glass lined can mean a few things.

Often it will refer to a glass contained that is almost "suspended" in the steal outter shell.

Yes, if you drop it it can break, however they are more durable than you'd think. They are also a bitch to find these days, but worth the effort as they won't fuck up the taste of your booze and you can leave it in there for beyond a couple of days.

I don't know what kind of ball games your friend's sneaking alcohol into, but if he's getting patted down on the way into the stadium (like mine), he probably won't want to risk getting his fancy flask confiscated. Most of the people I see bring in alcohol in cheap plastic flasks, or just small bottles.

I dunno about you, but ball games around here have metal detectors sometimes. You'd want something like this.

So, I guess your research included looking up the brief wikipedia entry, huh? I did the same kind of thing about 2 years ago and after some searching, I realized that no one actually makes the things with glass linings anymore.

I wound up springing for an acrylic plastic flask myself to get around the whole metal taste seeping in thing. I've also read that pewter flasks are less prone to that problem as well, but those are more expensive. The online store I bought it from did engraving for free and also sold small funnels, but I cannot remember the place anymore.

Coleman sells a cheap stainless steal flask for camping.

I've had mine for 5 years and it works fine.
