So an 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit the Samoan Islands an hour or so ago, and triggered a 10 foot tsunami. Now Hawaii is under a tsunami watch as well, along with New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, and other places I don't give a shit about. Basically, everything is ruined, the end. Lovely!

    it really doesn't. I mean, don't normal waves sometimes get bigger than that? Is it how long the wave is that makes it a threat?

    I guess it would depend on how big the wave was out at sea. Like, a 10 foot tsunami would actually be the result of a larger amount of energy in deep water, which would turn it into a much taller wave once it reached shallow water. (i think?)

    it's not so much the size of the tsunami that's the big deal, but the fact that there may be more, and that those may be bigger

    Something worth noting about tsunamis is that it's not just the height that fucks people over.

    It's the fact that can travel over 500mph in deep open water and up to 50mph as it gets closer to land.

    They will fuck shit up.

    You'd think so, but you'd be wrong. Tsunami's aren't just really big waves, they're actually put together a bit differently than normal waves.

    So a 10-foot tsunami would still be untold millions of tons of water smashing into something.

    Plus what Ziplock said. They're fast, too.
