"Yes, in my lecture. I need something of the victims and blood from a vampire's belly - both things I had before your buffoonery ruined my concentration."

Soren, having until now been searching his memory for some sort of knowledge on vampires, speaks up.

"Well, they can't be impossible to track without your blood ritual... Perhaps we can help each other in this matter. These vampires are obviously a blight to the city, which many of us here would like to be rid of. Perhaps the watch has imprisoned you because they don't want you spreading that vampires are stalking the Waterdeep streets. If you would be able to tell us what you know about the creatures, we might be able to... rid the city of them, and then the Watch will likely free you."

Soren seems to be pondering out loud, hoping that Valamathar will agree to his plan.

    Diplomacy: 1d20+12 15

I assume Nature is correct for Vampire knowledge.
And a Diplomacy check if it helps.

"Fine, fine. What would you like to know? I assume you know the elementals - they are unliving wights, reborn to suck blood and enslave others. Charismatic, strong, all that."
    It's actually Religion, not Nature.

"Is there a pattern or a way they select victims that would lead us to find one of these vampires?" Siobhan queries. "Amelia, do you have something from your great uncle we can use in the ritual?"

"Perhaps the Watch is not keeping you under guard here because you are any sort of threat. Perhaps they are doing so for your own protection," Keira ponders out loud. "After all, you are the common thread in these murders." A plan begins to form in her head.

"What if we broke you out of here, and laid a trap for any such vampires in the city. Surely, upon hearing that you were around, they would attack you if you were truly their target. Then we could burst in and defeat them!" she exclaims, her voice rising through each sentence.

"Vampires do not literally feed on terror, but they certainly crave it. They return to the same community again and again, striking repeatedly to build fear."

    Religion 10:
Vampires are undead beings reanimated by strange necromantic arts and the charismatic powers of a central "lord." They drain and use the blood of others to vivify themselves.

    Religion 15:
Contrary to popular folklore, vampires are not hampered by running water or repelled by garlic, and they don’t need invitations to enter homes. Wooden stakes hurt them, but no more so than any other sharp weapon. A vampire does not cast a shadow or produce a reflection in a mirror.

    Religion 20:
Waterdeep has some history with vampires, from mere lurkers in the cellars and sewers to longstanding hidden dynasties, like the Morlin family detailed in Savengriff's apocryphal Tales of the Fireplace Level, penned in the Year of Three Streams Blooded and lost shortly thereafter in the Spellplague.

"So if they have been actively feeding down in Old Temple Square, they will strike there again." Septimus wipes the mouthpiece of his pipe on a handkerchief and tucks it into his pocket.

"We must first determine if Valamathar is in any danger here, then head to the square and lay a trap to procure some blood so that he may complete this ritual." Then I will sell this information to both the broadsheets and Nongolin, he thinks to himself.

"Valamathar, who else knows you are being held captive. Has anyone else come to see you?"

Siobhan returns to the side of the door to the room, listening and then peering outside for any activity.

"How long have you been imprisoned here? I would suggest we bunker down for a while here to ensure our new friend is safe from vampire or assassin.. or vampire assassin... before we go and earn the scorn of the Watch by helping him escape."

Calwyn tugs at his beard thoughtfully. "It would s-s-seem that y-you're safe here, f-f-for the m-m-m-moment. The question is, can we b-b-bait the h-hook without you?"

Siobhan ponders the situation. "It certainly seems if someone were out to get you, they would have acted by now. You waved a wand at us when we came in, I assume a guest lecturer of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors knows how to use it. We should hasten to Old Temple Square immediately, the longer we linger the more likely we will miss our chance at catching a vampire. If what you are saying is true, Valamathar, Fang-Witch of Erlkazar, we will return with blood.. how exactly did you come about the skull of a victim and blood from a vampire's stomach?"

"I had blood saved from a conflict in Erlkazar. The rothe skull is incidental."

    He's telling the truth.

Septimus takes an empty vial from Valamathar's pile of ritual components and offers him a small handkerchief embroidered with the Cassalanter heraldry. "We will return as quickly as we can. If anything happens before then and you find yourself freed, show this to my clan and they will grant you shelter."

Septimus habitually pulls out his pipe and strikes a small match to light it. He examines the small vial in the light of the match for a second before tapping it gingerly against his brow in a salute to Valamathar and blowing out the match.

He pauses momentarily by the door before leaving "Is there anything else we should know before we attempt to lay in wait for these vampires?"

"Watch out for their eyes. If the lord is with them, he can mesmerize with a glance." Valamathar turns, shuffling towards his peppers on the grill, now thoroughly roasted.
Although the irony in it appeals to the English major in me, the Fang-Witch does cast a reflection and draws a shadow.

Keira yawns broadly. "I'm bored," she declares flatly to Soren and Calwyn. "It feels like we've been waiting here for days for something to happen." Idly, she plays with her fingernails, admiring their polish. "And it's cold and smelly and I mean, look at these buildings. Ew."
