From the CivFanatics forum:
Hello Civ Fans!

I wanted to let you know we'll soon be looking for beta testers to help us develop a unique new way to play Civilization. Ever since we finished Civilization® Revolution™ last year, I've been looking at ways of expanding the Civ gameplay experience to include solo, competitive and cooperative play to take advantage of the uniqueness of social networks. We're calling this project Civilization® Network™ and the full game will be available next year on Facebook. Civilization Network will allow you to join together with your friends to create the world's most powerful, richest, smartest, or just plain coolest civilization. You can coordinate your strategy to win great battles, share your technology to jump ahead of your rivals, lobby your family and friends to form your own government and win vital elections, manage and grow your cities to maximize production and happiness, spy on your enemies, and work with your friends to create the great Wonders of the World. The game will offer everything you enjoy in Civ in a fully persistent environment - you can play as much as you like, whenever you like, and it'll be free to play.

We'll offer a closed beta of the game soon, so stay tuned for details on how you can sign-up to participate. The full game will launch in 2010. For more information about Civilization Network, including development updates and behind-the-scenes posts from me and the Firaxis team, join our Facebook fanpage here: www.facebook.com/civnetwork.

Thanks and Stay Civilized!

Sid Meier
Director of Creative Development
Firaxis Games

Damnit, I'm trying to avoid social network sites. Outside LinkedIn anyway. :/

At least we sort of got a sci-fi version of it with Wing Commander: Privateer. Which was awesome.

WANT. Packrat and Bejewelled Blitz are the best two games on Facebook right now. If Sid Meier pulls this off, it'll be amazing. I'm somewhat worried about the whole persistent world thing, though. I hope isn't going to turn out to be one of those lame X-number-of-turns-per-day empire building games.

I'll give this a shot and dip into the facebook app pool.

But I'd rather have SMAC 2 or a new Privateer.

Mount and Blade lacks boats, wizards, and customizeable castles.

This, however, has not prevented me from joining with Ravenstern, and stocking my castle with Rangers and Knights of the Dragon, and telling Sarleon where and when to sit down and shut up. :)

Hah, me too. I can't stand all this new fangled twitter or facebook. Bunch of kids messin' up the good ol' internet.
Of course part of the reason why I avoid facebook is because my parents are on it.

Twitter's not so bad - just treat it as a micro-blog site. All the other social network sites barring LinkedIn can shove it though.

Yes. Firaxis is completely composed of a single team, all of whom are working on Civilization Network all the time. There will be no AC2 or Civ5. Ever.

An excellent idea, it is not like I am not wasting enough time on facebook as it is. Going by previous Civ experiences, I will probably be checking every couple of minutes. Now I just need to learn how to play it in my sleep....
