Hey!
So, as I'm currently going to be running the 4e Dungeons and Dragons game for new players, I was going to post a number of introductory pieces on how to play-by-post for the players. However! With a bit of foresight, I have realized that such works may be of use to the community as a whole, and that they would then as such be better suited in a thread of their own.
This, then, is that thread. I'm posting the OP right now, with the first installment to come later tonight while I am boring myself to death in my Sociology and Anthropology class.
What I would appreciate is input from community members on the topics they feel could use attention. Currently, in order, I am going to address these:
-PBP Basics & Etiquette
-RPG Basics
-RPG Systems
-Dice Rolling
-Applications and Character Creation
-In-Character Posting & Roleplaying
-Out-of-Character Posting
-Combat
-Catch-All FAQ
At some point in the future, a table of contents will go here. Thank you for your input.
Posts
Play-by-post (or pbp) games as commonly done here in Critical Failures, are games run over this message board at the Penny-Arcade Forums.
In a play by post game, players take their actions inside the game as posts in a single thread. Generally, there is a single "game thread" where all of the action takes place: this thread, then, can be read during or after the game's completion as a transcript or testament to play.
Note this post by Thanatos, one of the mods here, especially this quote: "Each campaign, game, or tournament being run on the forums gets its own thread. Gamemasters are considered in control of those threads, and those not participating in the games shouldn't post in them without a damn good reason. Asshattery in the individual game threads will not be tolerated."
(Disclaimer: In no way should you take this as advice towards your rights on this message board or any other. That's the mods' discretion.) The gamemaster Thanatos mentions I will elaborate upon in the future. For right now, all you need to know is that the gamemaster runs the game that is being played in the thread. As noted, you want to remain in their good graces. Most of the games played in CF live or die at the gamemaster's will, and getting them angry isn't a good idea if you'd like to continue playing.
That said, most gamemasters don't mind a minor bit of communication from those not playing. Keep in mind that this is generally predicated upon not disrupting the game's flow - a lot of roleplaying game pbps will have two threads, one for the actual game and one for what's called "out-of-character" communication. If you are dropping by to say something, do it in the out-of-character thread.
Gamemasters, as alluded to, run the threads their games take place in. They will generally set the tone and style of posting, frequency, and so on. However, part of the basic principles of play-by-post gaming is respect: both for the gamemaster and other players. Accusing others of cheating or acting rudely towards them does nothing other than make the game unpleasant for everyone. Simiarly, it's the gamemaster's choice as to whom is allowed to play. Many games have player caps for expediency (and in the case of roleplaying games, narrative): don't take a lack of inclusion in a game as a personal slight.
