[DND 4e] Castlevania OOC

edited June 2010 in Critical Failures
Good Eeeevening!

Step into the shadows of the deadliest dwelling on earth. You've arrived
at Castlevania, and you're here on business:

To destroy forever the Curse of the Evil Count.

Unfortunately, everybody's home this evening. Bat, ghosts, every kind of
creature you can imagine. You'll find 'em all over the place, if they
don't find you first.

Because you've got to get through six monstrous floors before you even
meet up with the Master of the House. Your Magic Whip will help, and
you'll probably find a weapon or two along the way.

But once you make it to the tower, you can count on a Duel to the Death.
The Count has waited 100 years for a rematch. He's ready. Are you?

This is a Dungeons and Dragons 4E game, based loosely in the castlevania universe. I will be accepting submissions through thanksgiving weekend. (11/29/09) A player may submit 3 characters, which must be legal in the character builder. Dragon magazine races are ok, but monster manual races are not legal. Starting gold is 100 gp, and each player may get for free their adventurers kit, weapon, armor, and shield (if applicable).

the background:
You, and the other players, are recruits for the local militia and peacekeeping force. The countryside and world around you has been at peace for a century. As with all places in the world, there are places of light, and places of dark and evil. Other details will be announced in the opening IC post, once the game starts.

About the play style:
My goal will be around a 50/50 combination of roleplay, and hack n slash. The combat will be fairly brutal, and you can obviously expect frequent undead. I have a storyline in mind, but as with my tabletop games, I keep alot of details open, leaving room for the players to bring anything to the table. I would like to see character sheets but more importantly character backgrounds and personality traits I can expect. Xp will be tracked by me, though I will likely be leveling characters every 2-4 weeks, depending on how everyone does with combat, and how much effort goes into the rp.

About the DM
I have been playing tabletop since second edition, and so far love 4th edition the most. Im currently running two games in real life, and will be possibly be starting a third, as well as this one. I am more than willing to clarify rules to my players, if they are unsure of how things work, or how I interpret them, though almost all rules are very straightforward.

Other notes:
i will be expecting my players to commit to this game, at least to the point where they check and update once per day. weekends optional, but preferred. character sheets will be on mythweavers, or better yet, orokos. rolls can be done through orokos as well.

The Cast:
Kelors Human paladin, Isaac Kendeall (Defender)
Horseshoes Human Artificer, Rev. Prof. Abram Von Hexing, Esq.
Tiamatz's Shifter invoker, Lament
StaptheJester's Minotaur barbarian minron
DaniAnt's Elf hybridf Cleric/Rogue Shady

The combat will be fairly brutal

Wait......Death is usually a pain in the neck normally! You wouldn't make him worse would you?

And just to confirm, you are throwing a group of level one adventurers at the prince of darkness and his minions correct?

    Yes, please.

Let's see... I'll throw-in Detective Torfram Krakrash (Dragonborn Fighter), who don't even need none of your fancy supplements. In case that doesn't do anything for you, I'll also toss in Mak Asteron (Minotaur Barbarian),

With regards to the rp, what type of backgrounds are valid to the game? Can we use FR and Eberron backgrounds?

And can our character be of any alignment, or do they have to fall in the specific hero range (Lawful good - Unaligned)?

If someone have an alternative to the character builder on Mac, I would love him big time.

Oh for background building purpose, can we assume that it take part in our world with fantasy elements?
Because If it's the case I would like to make a French character that come from France.
Or a Warlock sent by the Vatican. Or we have to translate that to a D&D setting (like a warlock hired by the church of Pelor)

    Wow, cool setting idea, might be hard to pass on this one. I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind;

You say we each get 100gp as normal, but starting kit/armor/shield/weapon is free. Can we buy alchemical items (is holy water cheap enough? hehe) or a wondrous item with the gold, then?

How long do you expect this campaign to last, level-wise? And are characters purpose built for undead killing in vogue or frowned upon?

What will you use to create/update maps?

    ok - to answer questions:

play style will be play by post. I will be uploading maps in spolier blocks, and updating it with each round of combat I post.

We'll leave the setting as in the mountains of Hungary, close to Transylvania. i.e. earth, but with a fantasy twist. The group (aka the militia) will be funded by the local branch of the church of kord... Im not a real stickler on pantheons.

Character backgrounds are up for grabs, though you all are local. meaning it will be easiest with general backgrounds. if you wish for the mechanical benefit of a FR or EB background, use it as a secondary for the benefit, but have a different one for your main.

Alignments must be unaligned to lawful good. You all will be heroes, after all.

Anything in the character builder is valid game, I suppose minus the alignment restriction.

you may spend your 100 gp anyway you wish. if you can afford it, its yours. just your basic equipment (kit, weapons, and armor) are free.

I hope to take this campaign through epic levels. I already have a large portion of the story fleshed out, and an outline for the rest.

Anyh other questions feel free to ask.

I'm gonna throw in a Shifter Invoker in here, she's like one of my oldest character designs and I've yet to try and put her in a game (online and in RL), and to try out a controller for the first time. If I get some time I might post some other characters in here as well.

Without further ado, I present you... Lament, the Longtooth Shifter Invoker to Kelemvor, the god of the Dead.

Here's a quick pic of her:
    Kaithlin.png

    Who is Lament?
Lament is a Longtooth Shifter, who was found at the young age of 5 and raised by the clergy in one of Kelemvor's many temples/churches. Once children reached their age (usually 12-14 years in human age), they are given the choice to leave the temple, or stay and become protectors to one of many of Kelemvor's temples.

Lament is one of a few who possesses a rare talent, which many of the clergy dubbed 'the gift of invocation'. It was said that those who had the gift were considered chosen by Kelemvor himself, and were trained to hunt down and exterminate Kelemvor's most hated of foes: the undead. But there came a price to these chosen children: they were never granted the choice their other siblings were given.

Throughout her years, Lament was trained in the arts of invocation, focusing on the wrathful aspects of her deity. Now 23 years later, on a chilly winter night, Lament saw a vision through one of her many dreams. In this vision, she was standing atop a mountain. Over in the distance she sees a grim hand extending his hand, pointing to a strange castle. As she looks into the castle, she sees a dark figure with the shape of a bat, and then an abomination.

As she woke up, she realized she needed to tell the clergy. The next morning she told the clergy of her vision. Sensing that this might be one of their lord's many visions (that only the most faithful are given), she was sent to Transalvania post-haste, and was instructed to help the local militia there, for they might be able to aid her in her holy quest.

Rumor has it she has chosen her name Lament, as she has never seen her parents, nor does she know of their current whereabouts. Many consider her to be one of the many shifter children who were spared from a civil war from some country, and were exiled to the vast reaches of the wild, or perhaps an orphan from a town that was destroyed by raiders or bandits. They could be alive or dead as far as she knows...

    Why Kelemvor?
Since we're not really picky with a pantheon, it's kinda easier to make characters to certain dieties, adjusting said dieties' domains to fit a character's profession (and to add your own deities to the world ). Since Wizards kinda ruined the Raven Queen with the whole manipulating personality thing, the only god of the dead that's still respectable to me is Forgotten Realm's Kelemvor. However, in this game, Kelemvor could instead be not just the god of the dead, but also the final judge to the departed, acting more like an impassive, 'I-dont-care-if-you're-good-or-evil' grim reaper character (or like Osiris and Anubis of Egyptian Mythology).

If you don't like these, I can gladly remove them. I just think such backgrounds to characters can give the DM (you) some extra ideas/inspirations to the game is all...

Sure, there were witches and werewolves and all sorts of terrible things about, and Zombies somehow showing up at night, but somehow paperwork had gotten to be important. The Clerk looked up from his table as he heard a large thump in front of him.

He peered upwards at a very large tattooed man in white vestements, bearing a large hammer.

"Ah.. um," he stammered at the man, "what can I do for you today?" He hoped the answer was 'nothing' but somehow doubted this to be the case.

    "Nein."

    "Okay. Profession?"

    "Priest."

"Ah yes, of course. Obvious, that."

    "Ja."

The sweating clerk decided to forego the rest of the application and wrote "approved" upon it in large red letters, signing it himself on the bottom, and after some consideration, stratching an "X" where Lichthämmer would have signed.

"Welcome aboard, my good fellow. We're glad to have you."

"Ja," said the Priest, taking the application, and walking toward the church that lay in the distance.

Background Family Tradition (General) - +2 to History Checks
    In Regards To Family Tradition:

Sir Elijah Von Hexing, Vampyre Hunter

    19270831017solomonkanel.jpg
Abram Von Hexing comes from a long line of Alchemists, Arcanologists, and Monster Hunters.

His first officially recorded ancestor, Elijah, was well known and regarded for his research and field work in the early or mid 11th Century. Though he was himself a member of the Knights Hospitaller, his connection to the Belmont Family is only speculative.

His portrait hangs in Malta, among various other prominent members of the Order, and the depiction dates the time of its painting, rather than the period in which the man himself existed. It is most likely based upon earlier portraitures, sketches, and woodcuts.

His presence was recorded at Jerusalem in 1099, where he was knighted for reasons unknown. He is also assumed to be from present-day Germany due to his name. His exploits were recorded not only in the Crusades, but also in present-day France, England, and oddly enough, Hungary. Known as "The Vampyre Hunter", one might assume that it was his primary area of expertise.

The life of Elijah Von Hexing is shrouded in mystery, but his legacy has left an impression upon the history of the world, though the majority of its people have never heard of the man.

    For their own good.

Sir Gerard Von Hexing of Malta

    portrait2k.jpg
As with other descendants, little is known of Gerard. He was recorded as a Professor of Theology at the University of Genoa, an expert of Arcanology at Universität Marburg, and as Knight he fought in many battles throughout Europe. The portrait above was apparently painted by the reknowned artist Anthony Van Dyck in 1627.

His alliegance seemed to be to no particular King or Country, but was strongly connected to Eastern Europe. He is presumed to have participated in many battles (political and military), but it is a matter of record that he fought alongside Prince Mihai Viteazul at the Battle of Şelimbăr, Ferdinand of Hungary at the Battle of Nördlingen... and had some sort of role in the Lutheran "Syncretistic Controversy" (apparently, Georg Calixt had said "the less is known of this man, the better).

A knight and expert swordsman, many men fell to his blade... and many supernatural creatures are said to have met a similar fate. He is believed to be Abram Von Hexing's grandfather

Just before the start of the adventure...
A knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," he said, without looking up from his book. "What is it?"

"Cap'n Bryant of the Night Watch, Sir. We were hoping you might be of some assistance to us."

"Afraid you've got me confused with someone else."

"Well... I'm often confused. You are Jova's local expert on history, vampires, werewolves, zombies, and other matters of the Occult?"

    "Yes."

"Your father, great grandfather et cetera were Witch Hunters?"

    "Indeed."

"And that was you that found out those witches that killed the garlic vendor last month?"

"It wasn't as difficult as you might think."

"And you were the chief professor of Inscrutable Studies and Occult Sciences at Veros University?"

    "Yes."

"The one that burned down recently?"

The Professor looked up from his book at the frumpy guardsman in his ill-fitting mail, helm held earnestly under one arm. The man had got to the quick of it. He was in need of a job, and they were in desperate need of people who might be competent in matters concerning the restless dead.

"I don't suppose you have any intention of relenting, do you?"

"No, Sir. I mean Doctor... or Reverend... or is it --"

"Professor Von Hexing will be fine," he said, donning a leather cloak and wide brimmed hat. He slung his crossbow over his shoulder, and began filling a bandolier with daggers, while looking for his tome of rituals and formulae. "I'll see what I can do, soldier. Lead the way."

Every adventure is only an opportunity to learn. With this in mind, Andarist has ended up in some of the most boring and dreary situations imaginable. He has also managed to find himself near dead in some of the most awkward places. So of course when an offer came along for a field trip, you can bet Andarist signed up. Now here's hoping he scrapes through this one with his life.

They called her grim because she did not speak until they day she left their village.
They called her Yve because they found her trembling as the 5 year-old staggered through the square in the middle of the night.

She would not tell people where she came from, or who her parents were, or anything really. A widow took pity on her and brought Yve into her house. There Yve worked and studied and most of all stayed silent. When Yve turned 10, She watched the local boys fence with wooden sticks. She walked over to a sapling and worked it out of the ground and into a spear, almost twice as long as a regular spear. The boys laughed when she faced them in the circle.

They did not laugh for long.

Eventally, the towns garrison grew to enjoy her presence, first as a nuisance, then as a cook, and finally as a trainee. She danced with her spear, making it sing while she remained silent. Eventally, her unit was called into the larger garrison of the land. When she left, she told the widow, "thank you."

When she left she swore her vengance.

Yve is an eladrin that was born out of the Fey. She doesn't remember much about her family, only that they were slaughtered by --insert gm device here--. She doesn't know why she was spared and basically survived on luck and kindness. She can speak when she wants to, but is more apt to act than speak. She is not timid or unsure, but the scars from her early life run deep.

Geimhreadh, Just call her Winter. (Elven Paladin)
Long ago, Eladrin and Elves went their separate ways, and in that parting, elves left the fey behind. However, fey still runs in their blood, and that is no more obvious than in Geimhreadh. Born on the first day of winter, she seemed to be a perfectly healthy baby. That is, until the thaw came, and green began to cover the countryside. As spring burgeoned, Geimhreadh seemed to wither away. Worried for her safety, her parents took her to the temple of The Raven Queen, goddess of winter. Unfortunately, the priests could offer nothing more than to raise her within the temple walls, where summer was but a glimmer through the windows. Now she has grown, and although summer is still unpleasant, she has the strength to resist.

In addition to laying down the law to petty brigands and resolving disputes between townsfolk, he also serves as a sergeant in the local militia. Whenever a tribe of Gnolls gets bold, or an organized group of raiders camps on the pass and demands tribute, Petyr is to be found at the front of the fight, driving them off.

When the Undead began to cause trouble, Petyr was naturally one of the people the townsfolk turned to. Petyr patrolled the area regularly, but he could only be in one place at a time, and while any of the living dead he found were quickly dispatched, their numbers were too great for him to control alone. Hearing rumors of a haunted castle, he set out to vanquish the evil at its source.

    Background:
Kant was a mongrel child, born to an elven mother who had cavorted with a Tiefling bard. Unfortunately, Kant inherited most of his father's characteristics, causing the rest of his hold to shun him, and his mother to berate and denounce him for the slightest infractions.

Upon reaching his maturity, Kant set out into the world, making his way as a mercenary. Eventually, he joined up with the Brotherhood of Bastards Born, a group of sellswords known mostly for their unfortunate tendency to be thrown into meatgrinders. Kant eventually rose to the rank of Bannerman, his once-scorned aggressive temperament translating well in battlefield leadership. Always where the fighting was thickest, roaring at his men to push the attack, to suck it up and fight, Godsdamnit, Kant saw all the horrors of war firsthand. Over time, the sight of so much carnage wore him down, and when his contract ended, he left the Brotherhood.

When peace broke out, Kant traveled to [Insert Town's Name Here,] where he spends his days getting drunk and, at times, instructing the local militia on which way to hold a spear. When [Town] is threatened, Kant fights, but only reluctantly; he's very much glad to have his fighting days behind him. Even when he does pick up his sword and shield, he's far more likely to sneak his men past a patrol and return for reinforcements with information on the enemy's location, size, composition, and disposition than to engage them head-on.

Kant was more than content to let other people deal with the undead, until rampaging ghouls destroyed the tavern. Now, it's a somewhat personal affair for him, and with the tavern gone it's not as though he has anything better to do.

[OOC Note: Kant will be played as a total asshole. His Inspiring Word and other various Warlord commands are not so much "Come on, you can do it!" as "GET THE FUCK UP YOU PATHETIC MAGGOT! HIT HIM, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR! NOW MOVE!"]

    ITEMS

    Background:
In life, Aemon Karatheon was a thief. His particular specialty was stealing valuable magical artifacts. This made Aemon very, very rich. The downside was that there's a limited market for objects of unimaginable power, and most of the buyers are distinctly unsavory. So it came to pass that Aemon trafficked, quite regularly and knowingly, with the more intelligent undead - the Lich Ogena, in particular.

Predictably, Ogena eventually had no further use for Aemon. She killed him and enslaved his resurrected remains while he clawed away at the back of his mind, forced into what seemed a crushing, utterly dark space, where the dead named his sins for what seemed an eternity. Eventually, a Paladin of the Raven Queen slew Ogena; with the arcane chains binding his spirit stricken, his soul finally descended to the Shadowfell.

To be confronted by the Raven Queen Herself.

Aemon was given a choice: he could be judged for his sins, and spend all eternity in the Nine Hells; or, he could be infused with new unlife, to do the Her bidding, and destroy a particularly troubling vampire. Aemon, unsurprisingly, chose to take up the mantle of the Avenger, and the Raven Queen bound his soul into a recently deceased Elven body.

Aemon remembers very little of his previous life. He vaugely remembers that he did terrible things, and that he was given a choice between this life or something else, but he cannot recall what the other option was. He is certain, though, that he is to travel to a castle in a high mountain pass, and destroy the lord that reigns there; that once he does so, She will free him, and he will at last know peace.

I'll be putting these up on Orokos in the near future, but wanted to go ahead and get the submissions in. I'll edit links in when I've set up the character sheets.

    Toox, The Pied Piper.
    LEADER: (Changling, Cunning Bard)
    I6TG5.jpg

Toox's only legacy is a song and story told about him by a simple bard that visits a city shortly before he arrives. The bard proclaims to the vermin ridden city that they are about to be visited by a world famous entertainer with a tune that can drive even the most persistent pest away from the city. This bard shares tales of Toox, and how wise Mayors would open their coffers to him if they ever wanted to be rid of their infestations. No one can seem to quite remember his face, and he slips out right after spreading this rumor. Anyone ever rat bitten would open up a coin purse no matter how light to help, if only Toox would arrive to relieve them of their troubles after this bards tale.

Not long after, Toox himself will arrive in town and ask if he can be of service. Funny that the bard and the self-proclaimed world entertainer are never seen together.

Toox has been trying to persuade the outpost to pay him for his services, and thinks a tale of adventure would get his pay increased in towns far and wide.

Ok...this is super cheesy, but in a completely awesome way.

I present my completely ORIGINAL characters for this castlevania romp.

Graham the Nasty Human Aerialist Rogue
Graham has always been unlucky. Born poor and losing both his parents early, Graham was raised on the streets of London. He got by only through stealing what he could and running as fast as he could. His ability to climb like an orangutan helped as well. Graham was shanghaied at 16 and brought into the service of a pirate ship. Graham excelled at sea and learned to climb the masts of his new home as quickly as the buildings on the streets of his home.

Graham's luck finally turned when his ship was attacked by a British pirate hunting vessel; he joined in the assault on his captors (after it was obvious which side would win of course). The naval ship liberated him and offered him a position as a pirate of a different sort...one that operated under jurisdiction of the crown.

He travels to Hungary under orders from the Queen herself to seek an artifact that was stolen at sea by agents of the dark lord.

Graham is a slippery and wily fighter when he has to be, but he prefers to avoid fights when he can. He prefers to work alone so he can best use his stealth and ability to bypass obvious routes, but he appreciates being on the winning side more than his professional pride. Graham is cynical and has a pessimistic sense of humor, but can also be a sucker for a pretty smile or a sad story.

    Syphela Deva Invoker of Christ
Syphela's last life was tumultuous. She was promised a path to understanding powerful arcane secrets and eventually became a servant of Dracula's librarian. Though she never directly harmed anyone, the dark rituals that she researched led to the dark lord gaining power.

Syphela was reborn with her thumbs on the opposite sides of her hands. This mutation was obviously a sign from God that she was one step removed from rebirth as a rahkshasa. Syphela sought solace in the church of Rome, a powerful player in the world scene that gladly accepted her help. Syphela is a devout christian, but her church asks her to travel to dark corners of the world and fight the spreading evil in any way that she can. She fights to save this world and her own undying soul.

Syphela is tall and dresses in a white and blue cloak that hides the secret motions she uses to invoke the wrath of the lord. She is withdrawn and aloof, yet can be a bit of a flirt if she wishes to...or if the church wishes it...

    Dalv Vampiric Revenant Swordmage
Dalv was a sweet child with a doting mother. He enjoyed simple pleasures and told his mother that he wished nothing more than to one day own a farm where he could take care of her. The only problem was that he had to be hidden at all times. His cold skin, red eyes, white hair, and prominent fangs betrayed his vampiric heritage. The boy never knew who his father was, and his mother shushed away any of his questioning.

When local villagers heard of the child, they came to their hovel at night at threw them in the dungeon. Dalv's mother was tortured and eventually burned at the stake. She told her child before she died not to hate humans. The child was tortured to death, but never wavered in following his mother's advise, never hating his captors. Dalv rose from the grave to find a dark figure above him. This man told him that he was his father and that he had given him the gift of life twice, but if he ever sought him out again he would kill him.

Confused, Dalv ran from town to town, stealing what he could and picking up swordcraft and magic along the way. He seeks answers about his past and now ventures back into the midst of the fully living to see if his father is the beast at the heart of the castle, and if he is, to lay the demon to rest.

Dalv hides his features behind body concealing armor and a black and red bandanna over his mouth. Though his form is quite imposing, he is a jovial man with those who he feels he can trust. He still believes in the inherent good of mankind and tries to save people from themselves whenever he can.

edited to make the last two more interesting and more "homage", less "rip-off". Also...is the use of "real" religion ok? If we are just going off Castlevania game stuff, Christian themes are pretty heavy in the series so I figured that the Catholic Church would be pretty powerful. Is there a time period we should be roughly aiming for? I was kind of thinking late 16th century (Queen Elizabeth, Inquisition and Church Intrigue etc., or is this completely alt. history?)
