Colin McRae: DiRT (shortened to DiRT in North America) is the sixth racing game in the Colin McRae Rally series, developed by Codemasters, and the last of the series to be published before Colin McRae's death. It features new graphics, audio, physics engine, new vehicles and a new game engine which was co-developed between Codemasters and Sony Computer Entertainment. The game features a variety of off-road racing categories as well as World Rally Championship style events. The sequel, Colin McRae: Dirt 2, was released on 8 September 2009.
I can't tell you about the experience on the console versions of this game, because I only have PC. The original DiRT was an excellent rally game for the PC, including many different types of vehicles to drive and lots of different environments to slide around in. Even though its a little dated today, the game is still a lot of fun to play. If you managed to crash and start barrel rolls you witnessed some of the best crashes in a racing game, even next to Burnout crashes.
I can't tell you much about the second one since its not out for PC yet, this is DiRT 1 infused with the Mountain Dew Bro Goatee culture of today. This one is less focused on the outright rally events and moves more into closed circuit off-road courses.
This is one of the first PC games to utilize Direct X11, which will require a Direct X11 card to run. It still have DX9 though!
The game was to be released today on Steam, but for some reason its getting delayed for 3 more days. The demo did officially release today.
If you pre-purchase DiRT 2 on steam today you can get the original DiRT 80% off!
It looks like steam is not the only place this got delayed. Retail stores are not selling the PC copy until the 9th or 15th. I guess Codemasters had to drop the ball on PC like a lot of other games.:?
played the PC demo. very very pretty game, and while the truck racing is awesome, the car racing is waaay too easy to spin out.
Thats the fun of rally games though. You have to fight to keep control of your car. To win you have to take huge risks that might send you off a cliff or into a wall.
This is out on steam for UK and other non US places at the moment. It did look like it was going to release for me in an hour but then it switched to 3 days later now to the 8th.:x
I guess this is how the UK people feel when the US gets the game before them.....
Some of the things that happens when your sure your going to crash are some of the best parts of this game. The AI in codemaster racing games is notorious for being suicidal though.
So after a couple days of playing this game is way better than GRID. Handling is much better, races are more fun. Stopped playing GRID after being forced into a drift event where I bought the most expensive car which just constantly spun out of control. Meanwhile in Dirt 2 I drift around corners like weeeeeeee.
Rented this for a bit when I had a break in my Boomerang list.
Pretty fun, I only played on normal but the cinematic camera after rally stages especially made you look like The Stig, the sense of speed and drifting was great.
Fuck those extreme dudes calling me all the time though, I don't care what Travis Pastrana thinks of me.

First thing you do is go to the audio options and turn the voices off. They still talk when you get back to the trailer but it not as bad as in race. They really need to all of the Dirt 1 tracks over to this game. Its lacking in the rally stages. I would pay for a DLC pack that did this.
So I got this with my 5850, and Suds swears by it, but I need info on how to tweak the cars and maybe the controls to suit my style of driving. It -looks- like fun and I actually tried finding some sort of guide and just ended up with a huge list of tracks and different race types. If I can get into it I know it will keep me busy for a long time before I even hit the multi.
The short summary of my style is light on the brakes and I like making my turns nice and tight. It's been years since I've played a racer and the last time I did any powerslides was Mariokart.
Been playing this on PC for a good few days and completed the Pro events (well, I got the achievement, despite not having even half of them done). The sense of "OH MY GOD I'M GONNA CRASH FUCK FUCK FUCK " is there for almost every race. ALso, spinning out is fun!
Anyway, the tracks are getting a little old now and the lack of DLC is mind-boggling. Its there, in 'extras' but greyed out for some cruel and twisted reason. Just don't put the fucking there, you spawns of Satan! I keep going to that section thinking they've maybe unlocked it. Yeah, right.
Ah well, back to the spinning out and flipping over.

I really want to play this but I have nowhere to set up my wheel in my living room. I keep looking at the Wheelstand Pro but £90 is a lot of money for a piece of metal.
...it's a very pretty piece of metal though.
Until then I have to attach the wheel to an ironing board and it's just too much hassle.
I thought you had a 360? The pads are fantastic and I really can't see a wheel working with this too well, it just seems to arcadey.
360 and a PS3. I played Dirt 1 on the PS3 at my old place (where I could use the wheel easier) and really enjoyed it. I gave Dirt 2 a go with it, hooked up to the ironing board, and it works great, feedback is fantastic and it feels like I'm sat in an arcade booth (Sega Rally style!).
It's difficult to go back to a pad now (I could use my 360 wireless pad) when I see my Drive Force EX box sat there, begging to be used.
I'm just going to crack one of the days and use it as an excuse to buy a Wheelstand Pro.
A friend lent me his G25 racing wheel (With the H-Shifter!) and Dirt 2 is just amazing with it, luckily I play on the PC so my desk works great for the wheel.
Honestly, I was playing GT5 and the whole blandness of it compared to Dirt 2 is really sad. Can't wait for Dirt 3, hopefully it's more like the Colin McRae series, where you had full rally events with car damage that you needed to repair and the such.
I think the least expensive quality wheel you can get is the Driving force Pro/GT from Logitech. It has great force feedback, but compared to the G25/G27 it only has a sequential shifter and gas/brake pedals which don't offer different resistance. (And no clutch, but Dirt 2 doesn't use it)
I use the DF/GT on the PC with dirt 2. Get your arms ready because the wheel will really fight your control depending on how high you have the wheel weight.
I have the Driving Force Ex and it works with PS2/PS3 and PC. Seems to be about £35 to £40 online.
If you're not too serious about your racing games and just want it for some arcade/light sim use then it's great. It doesn't have a shifter, instead it uses paddles. The force feedback on it is pretty damn strong and it's nicely made. You CAN get a lapbar for it so you can use it without bolting it to a desk, but it doesn't work too well.

They're promising more of a focus on rally, but then again this IS Codemasters - while they produce enjoyable racing games they frequently fall short of the promises they make during development.
DiRT 3’s exhaustive car list includes the current 2010 WRC Cars, the Ford Focus RS WRC and Citroen C4 WRC, and, for the first time in a videogame, will introduce the 2011 Ford Fiesta RS WRC. In addition to the cars competing at the highest level of contemporary Rally, the extensive car list will star over 50 licensed off-road vehicles spanning 50 years of the sport, including classic racers like the Lancia Super Delta HF Integrale and the Mini Cooper S 1275. With rally stages set across three continents, including the addition of all-new locations Finland, Kenya and Michigan, players will learn to master the conditions on tarmac, gravel and snow in dry and wet conditions for the most authentic rally experience.
I loved the multiplayer on 2. The stagger start of the rally courses is what held me. If 3 is way more rally courses, with staggard starts on multi again, I'm more than sold.
Nobody bloody plays 2 anymore
I really wanted to check out the multiplayer (PC here) but I refuse to go in with Pubbies.
Regarding the wheel, I have on Dirt 2, Burnout Paradise and Juiced so it wouldn't be a worthwhile purchase just yet. That said, GRID should drop this christmas (£10 already!) so I'll have that too. I just don't really see any other PC racers that appeal to me. Hot Pursuit isn't on Steam else I'd totally go for it.
Have yo uhad a chance to try it out? The controls a ridiculously easy to get to grips with and I thought most of the stuff in that trailer for 3 was completely possible given how loose the controls are.

Every time they push it back I get the feeling that's where it's going to end up.

Played a few races, cars handle oddly after having played a bit of GRID. I am, however, playing with an old ass Saitek P880 controller.
Runs smooth with everything on high at 1920x1080 with the 5850 the unlock code came with. Looks pretty nice.

So delicious.
I know rallying on CM/Dirt games has always been really fake, but it's just so much fun.

And I would race with you guys but I have so little gaming time these days, coupled with the treasure hunt thing and generalised backlog, I'm swamped.
I'm going to suck at those so bad.
