Went to play some Street Fighter 4...
Loaded up the game, got online. Entered into a match, and as soon as the announcer goes, "The weak lose and the strong win..." - PS3 shuts off. Not a reset, shuts off completely. TV says "Check signal cable". Red light shows on the PS3. A little weirded out but thinking nothing of it, I touch the power button on the PS3. Light turns green. Press it again, I hear the HD start to spin - beep! beep! - goes back to red. FUCK.
Don't tell me this thing is bricked now. It was an original 60gb Emotion Engine model. I'd hate for it to be an expensive paperweight. Plus my game is still stuck inside and I can't get it out.

This is kind of stupid, but have you tried switching off the power supply in the back, switching it back on and trying again?
Good luck. I have a BC 80GB, that I have nightmares will some day fail (I really, really need my BC).
(Knocks on my wooden desk.)
I hate stories like this.
You're thinking of the 360. PS3s are warrantied for a single year, and as far as I know, they require receipts for any warranty claims. (I seem to recall a thread here last year where Sony fucked someone over because they didn't have a receipt)
In both cases, the OP is shit out of luck.
Update: After removing the HDD, I decided to check and see if I got the same error with the hard drive no longer connected. Sure enough, I did. This allows me to reasonably conclude that the problem is HDD related and I may simply be able to replace it.
This. If the hard-drive removed produces the same error, the problem is not with the hard-drive.
Edit:
Also, if you send in a 60GB system, they HAVE to send you the same full-featured system back. I've heard people say its advisable to send a note and tell the person on the phone you definitely want a 60gb-featured system back, but I don't think I've heard any stories of people sending in a 60 and getting an 80 in return.

* First off, the rep was cool. I explained to him that I'd taken the case off because I'd initially thought that's what you had to do in order to access the hard drive, but I figured out all that does is let you access the Blu-Ray drive and effectively void your warranty. Mine was already voided from being so old, so I didn't think much of it. He told me that as long as I didn't "really mess with" anything under the hood, it shouldn't be an issue, and to just put everything back in it's place and they'll look the other way.
* Second, they will repair systems with voided warranties, as long as they haven't been noticeably tampered with or modified. They took down my model number, sent me an email with a form to fill out, which also included a section on if you have a disk still stuck in it. You put down a $149 deposit, send it in with a pre-paid box they send you, and then cross your fingers.
* Depending on the state of your PS3 and what's wrong with it, they'll either repair it, replace it with the same model, or send release your $149 and send you back your Playstation Paperweight. The process can take anywhere from 3 days to 2 and a half weeks, taking into account workload and the issues plaguing your system.
Sounded reasonable to me, so as soon as they send me the box I'll be shipping it out. Wish me luck!
That's because it IS the yellow light of death, there's no such thing as the red light of death for the PS3. I had similar problems earlier in the year.
It sucks and you'll lose all your saves (unless you've backed them up beforehand) but you should get it back in a couple of weeks. Just hope they fix it properly the first time around, mine took 3 tries to get it right. I don't think you have to worry about losing PS2 backwards compatibility though, they sent me my 60GB PAL system back to me.
OP said red, so I have to assume it's red.
In any case, I'm sorry for your loss Ranadiel--I'm glad to hear the Sony rep is a lot more compassionate then Sony's stated policy is (apparently), though I hope you're not as attached to BC as I am (assuming they can't fix it).
Oh I know that, I was just saying that you were right. There's no such thing as the red light of death, since the red light is used all the time when you've got the PS3 off. It's the yellow light that flashes if there's a problem, though it only flashes for half a second before there's 2 red flashes.
:^: Good luck! And necropost this thread or send me a PM with the end result. I'm always a teensy bit worried about my launch model and what I'd have to deal with if it needed repairs, so hit us (or me) with an update when all is said and done.
